After sleep study,…read moreshe said I needed CPAP treatment, but ordered the wrong kind of machine from what we discussed. In the meantime, the sleep clinic manager, Matthew, was great in showing me how everything worked and told me sometimes it can take many tries to get the right kind of mask. After a month, during my next visit with Dr. Pan, before even getting the right machine, I told her issues with the two masks I'd tried, thinking she might give other recommendations. I also asked for explanation of the nightly data from AirResMed you can get online since I hadn't noticed any difference in my quality of sleep or how I felt during the day. She didn't even have the reports to refer to during my visit even though they're readily available and I later verified had been faxed to her before my visit. She just said, "It's obvious you're not tolerating CPAP well." She then said she would get me info on a dental device, but I told her I really wasn't interested in that. She then said something like my sleep apnea was mild enough that it wasn't putting me at risk for cardiovascular problems, and then just walked out of the room. Dr. Pan was so abrupt and obviously uncaring. How could she just dismiss me as "not tolerating CPAP well" when I'm still in the process of getting the machine I should have gotten to begin with and have only tried 2 different style masks at this point? I guess she's gotten as much money from Medicare on my behalf and knows she'll get no more, so might as well get rid of me. There's not enough space for me to tell you how little I think of Dr. Pan. There is only one other doctor there (Dr. Moss). I can't judge his healthcare, but I did have an interesting experience with him during my last visit while waiting for Dr. Pan. He walked into the exam room, without introducing himself or asking my name, and was just saying, "Yes, you have some sleep apnea..." When I looked at him and asked who he is, that's when somebody else came in and said he had come into wrong room. Pretty unprofessional in my opinion! Although other staff at this clinic is great, I would never return here.

My treatment with the VVMC sleep center started almost 7 years ago. I had a sleep study…read morerecommended by my primary care doctor, and it was discovered that my oxygen concentration was getting down into the low 60% range. I was literally suffocating while asleep, and the side effects were terrible...restless legs, nightmares, severe daytime fatigue. I was prescribed a CPAP with nasal pillows for a mask, and my problem was that the air would flow in my nose but right back out my mouth, so we tried a full face mask, which also proved too drying to my mouth, so at that point I started experimenting on my own using surgical tape and band-aids to seal my lips closed, but that didn't work. What I finally hit upon was wearing a wrap-around chin strap to keep my mouth closed, and a 3" ace bandage wrapped around my face from front to back to cover my lips, then the nasal pillows. All this took about 6 months of trial and error to figure out, and even though it was a labor-intensive process, the end result is that I can sleep through the night. I literally can't sleep without it. I am firmly convinced that I might possibly have died by now without it. Over the past 6 years, I have shared my discoveries with 3 different doctors at the Sleep Center, and all of them were amazed at my ingenuity and persistence until I achieved success. If it initially doesn't work for you, don't be afraid to try to solve the problems with a little homework and experimentation. It will make a HUGE difference in your quality of life.

She doesn't talk down to you or rush you -- when you speak with her, it feels like talking to a good friend who truly cares. What really stands out is how incredible she has been with my parents, who both have dementia. We were previously going to one of the top dementia clinics in all of Arizona, but Dr. Alyssa has done more for them with her compassion, patience, and understanding than any specialist has. She has a true heart for people, especially seniors with cognitive issues, and her kindness shows in every interaction.
