After the waiting that I first talked about, once I got the glasses it was only a matter of a couple of weeks before one of the lenses fell out as I was cleaning it. The definition of customer service varies from one organization to another. In my opinion there are several areas that must be addressed to provide outstanding customer service. First, the staff should have an excellent attitude and great communication skills. Customers or Patients should be greeted in a pleasant, professional manner. Secondly, practitioners and businesses must realize that people can go where ever they want to have their services provided. Finally, patient's questions or concerns must be addressed. In summation, good customer service means simply to treat patients like you would like to be treated. The result is great customer service and appreciation for our valued patients. My first visit here was today and I had a great experience. I've required glasses and/or contacts for over 20 years so I've seen many vision professionals. The office waiting area was very clean and well maintained. It was nice with quite a lot of room to walk around and check out their frames. The staff was courteous and professional as well as friendly. While I was searching for a pair of frames, an older gentleman walked in who said he wasn't a patient there, but needed a repair of his eyeglasses. They quickly repaired them, cleaned them and ensured that every screw was tightened. He was very happy and it showed that even non-paying customers get treated with the same amount of respect and care as paying customers. Despite arriving 20 minutes early for my appointment, I only had to wait one minute! I work in healthcare so I understand having to wait, but this was great. My exam was performed and I was fitted for contacts and glasses. The optometrist was wonderful and even provided me with important information that was never told to me by any prior doctor in the past 20 years! I was very thankful for that. I received contact samples and was encouraged to see him in a week to ensure that they are working for me. They have an amazing selection of frames from Gucci, Prada, Coach, Dolce and Gabbana and many other high end frames as well as great more affordable frames. I'm very pleased with my selection. They also have a good variety of contact lenses. Overall, great experience from the atmosphere, staff courtesy, friendliness and professionalism as well as their products. I'd recommend this place to my friends and family! I can't wait for my frames to arrive. Edit: for those who don't like the exam with the pupil dilation, they have a new eye scanner which photographs the many layers of your eye and it replaces the dilation and is much more convenient. My insurance didn't cover it (not the company's fault) but it was only $15. Just a side note for those interested. read more

I'm not given to writing bad reviews, but this was not a good experience on a few levels. I needed new bifocals. I have the eye exam, all is good, shiny new equipment and friendly/expert technician, and show the dr a pair of readers from Walgreens, and I say I want the readers section just like this, the same strength. He asks where I like to hold a book to read, and I show him, about 16" from my nose. After receiving a prescription for bifocals I send my RX to an online frame and lens service (the frames at SPA were ok, and like most optometrists, a bit limited and overpriced, but that's just standard). Upon receipt of new frames I put them on and whoa, totally over prescribed for the reading focal. These had to be 8 or 9" from my face to focus, and I'm not the kind of person who buries their nose in a book. Remember that I showed him when he asked me to that I need them to be a bout 16" away. I went back, and the receptionist said, well, yeah this happens a lot, these online services often get it wrong, but they checked the new glasses out and no, they were accurate, exactly as prescribed. So they made an appt for me to come in a week later to see what was up. I come in, and they want to give me another eye exam. I say I don't think that's needed, I think you just got the numbers wrong for the focal length I asked for. So the dr. puts several corrective lenses in front of the new frames until they can focus at the length I wanted. Now, here's the thing... the whole time, I'm being subtly treated like a doddering old fool who doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm 64, by the way, in good shape. I'm being treated like I'm 100 years old and blind and deaf. "Well, the prescription is added to your distance vision. That's why they call it an ADD." Yes, I know, but why did you give me the wrong numbers to add? Finally he gets it right, and it turns out the prescription he originally wrote for me was 2 whole points off. Only the barest of apologies for this. He has me check it again, the whole time inferring that this is me changing my mind, not his mistake. "Are you suuuuurrree?" he says with a fake smile. WTF? This was your mistake. I have to return these glasses, get a new prescription I hopefully won't have to pay for, and this process has now taken weeks. Kind of inconvenient, and I don't need your condescension on top of all this. There's one more thing... the dr, well, he smells. Like he just came in from a 5k run and threw on a crisp shirt and called it good. This is someone working close up to you with their armpits nearly in your face. So... arrogance, ageism, and BO... not a good combination. He says with his not so sincere smile, "Well, I hope this time it works out for you. See you next year". Another disabled veteran that I know had the misfortune of being sent to this place for exam / glasses by the Veterans Administration. Charged the VA even more! The glasses were unsatisfactory but somewhat useful. Optometrists don't have anything to do with "health" of eyes. They deal with vision. They attempt to correct vision problems, not eye problems. More waste fraud and abuse. They probably wouldn't be in Yucca Valley if they were any good / reputable. read more

My eye exam with Dr. Lauren Schwalb in early May was a great success. I had a floater in my right eye, and with the eye photos, and her thorough exam with her bright microscope tools, we identified the problem, and she reassured me that the floater will settle down in the next few of months. This office was a great disappointment. Last year (in another state) I was examined by an optometrist who, when I declined dilation, simply performed the examination without any fuss or bother. She told me why the procedure was recommended, but accepted my decision. Perhaps it was because she hadn't invested in an expensive machine that needed paying for; perhaps it was because she was a woman, but for whatever reason she neither tried to coerce me into accepting dilation nor insist that I pay $15 out-of-pocket for a retinal scan as an alternative. Not so Slaugh Peterson Accociates. When I declined both dilation and their retinal scan I was declined service. Optometrists are certainly free to advise best practices for their patients, but I firmly believe that patients have rights, among which is the right of access to a medical practitioners best efforts within a relationship respectful of patient choice in treatment. If SPA is no longer able to perform eye examinations without dilation or scans let them say so and not try to browbeat people into accepting them. Othewise people are bound to suspect it's about the money. I want to say that I have nothing against the assistant I dealt with as he was only doing what the 'associates' require him to, and happily I found another optometrist across the street--Vision Professionals--who were able to accommodate me free of any strong arm tactics. read more

I have always been extremely with our care until today. They "highly recommend" an exam my insurance doesn't cover at an additional $15 per patient. I opted out for my children and went with the dilation option. Then came time to get their prescriptions. They wanted to charge me an additional $20 per child to give me their PD measurement that takes mere seconds to give. I feel like they are trying to force me to purchase glasses through them. Not only am I not buying glasses here but we will not return for exams either! They've lost three patients and a lot of referrals I will no longer be making! read more

I have been going to this office for too many years to count and even though my favorite Optometrist there has retired, (Dr. Hayashida) I still remain at this office and now see Dr Strickland. The office has gotten pretty fancy and they do ask you to try machines that insurance does not pay for, but Dr Strickland always takes plenty of time to make sure all my questions and issues are addressed. The office staff is always friendly and helpful so for the few bad reviews below, perhaps they had different expectations. I would have given five stars, but their selection of frames seem a bit on the expensive side. My main concern is about the health of my eyes and I believe Dr Strickland has that concern too read more

Have been going to this office for over 30 years. Now that Dr. Hyashida has retired, I do not feel as if I receive the extensive eye exam that I used to have. My eye dilation lasted over six hours. I do not remember having my vision so affected that I was fearful of driving when Dr. H. dilated my eyes. They did offer me a "partial dilation" for an additional $15, but I feel that their fees are high enough without paying extra. My contact lens prescription was calibrated so that one lens was weaker so that I could read small print a little better. Dr. Strickland decided I needed better long distance vision and changed my prescription. He also told me if I wasn't compliant (after wearing successfully contacts for 50 years!) that he would "put me into daily lenses"! That is not something I would agree to and I don't appreciate being talked to as if I was a naughty child. Guess it is time for me to find a new optometrist. read more
