Went for the first time on a Saturday evening with my wife to play some pool. The pool tables are in bad shape and the cues are all broken and splintered. Opened a tab and the bartender had to keep my card(haven't seen a place do this in years). Over the course of a couple hours we had 8 total drinks. When it came time to close out, she handed us the credit card machine to sign/do the tip. In TINY print, the screen said our original bill was $106 and the total was $140 and asked if we wanted to add +3% +7% or NO TIP. I asked the lady why we were being forced to tip $34 on a $106 tab. She couldn't give me answer. "I'm not sure how that thing works" is all she could tell me. I'm a former bartender and my wife is a current bartender for many years and we often get the message from our credit card company "did you mean to leave a 50% tip?" Because we love leaving a good tip. I would have done the same here but the shady practice of auto gratuity of 30% for a party of 2 and then also charging 3% more for paying with a credit card is insane. I don't think Slate is that much fun. It's one of those places where's there nothing terrible about it, but it doesn't really have its own unique identity. I can't really tell if it's supposed to be a pool hall, an arcade, a sports bar, etc. It feels like it takes a little bit of all those things, but stops short of being any of those things. I'm also not really impressed with their selection of drinks, especially considering the nearby bars that it competes with. All-in-all, I don't hate Slate, but I just can't really find a good reason to go there. read more

I went here for a special event so not sure how it is during regular hours, however the wine festival I attended was awesome. Plenty of open space inside, as well as some patio seating. Nice size bathrooms on either side with multiple stalls, was clean and any workers (I assume they worked for Slate) I encountered were very friendly and nice. read more

Haven't been here in a while. It's a bigger bar with games and plenty of seating. There are multiple small rooms with different games and seating options. It's located in the south end, so parking can be a hassle. We didn't need to pay to get in, but they do have bouncers at the door checking IDs. This is definitely a spot to go if you want to play a few games, lounge, or just sit at the bar and drink. They have multiple TVs, so they do play the games. Overall, it's not a bad place to go and chill and catch up with friends. Nothing too different or spectacular with this place, though. Normal bar scene and crowd. I wouldn't mind coming again if in the area. read more

You'll see nearly every football team fan base represented and the whole thing feels like one giant party. Luckily they have the space to support such a crowd with multiple bars both inside and out. On a quieter night you can come here to enjoy their large variety of games including ping pong and pool. Sometimes this place can be a bit too "clubby" for my tastes and the crowds can be overwhelming at times. I have been here a couple times, unfortunately the last time I had gone I had the worst experience ever, as I was assaulted by the bouncers and had to call the police to get them involved. During my experience the place was empty and we put $5 in the basketball machine and were shooting some basketball when a bouncer told me we could no longer play because it was closed and when I had asked if we could have a refund or switch to a machine that was open he told me to F-off and called my girlfriend a b***h. After I asked to speak with a manager he took me and threw me to the ground and tried I to fight me, I was able to get away and went to look for a manager to get help and was then attacked by multiple bouncers. After I was able to escape, I asked to please see the manager again and they told me to call 911 and that's exactly what I did. There is a police report filed against them and it doesn't seem to be the first time this has happened with their bouncers. It's unfortunate as this could be a great venue, but the employees and management are a joke and enjoy assaulting customers. read more

On June 21 was first time I had been a in a long time and definitely first since it took over more of a Country Music theme. The music and DJ was awesome keeping the crowd energized and having fun. I would never visit this restaurant again. The food and service were both terrible. It took 30 minutes to get mimosas - literally a 2 ingredient drink - and we had to repeatedly ask for things from our server. The food is wayyy overpriced for the quality. I ordered an eggs Benedict that was $17 and the eggs were hard like boiled eggs, not poached. There was no flavor and the smallest drizzle of hollandaise on top. They remade it for me and it was still terrible. I don't even cook and I could've made a better eggs Benedict. My boyfriend ordered a breakfast sandwich and it was also pathetic. I like this place since it has lots of games and lots of TV's to watch sports. If you are looking for a place to have a couple of drinks and have a nice time you can check this place out. Parking is a little hectic since it's in south end and it can get crowded around that area. They have a designated section for the bars in this strip, but if you are in during busy times this will be hard to find. Drinks are good for a bar but nothing wow. We had a work happy hour and the waiter was nice but didn't write down our drinks so some drinks were messed up, but they were fixed at the end. I just think it's better to write these down since we were a 10+ party. I would hang out here for happy hour since it's not that crowded. If it's crowded it can get pretty hot. read more

Fun place to go to play games (they have multiple pool tables, a few ping pong tables, a basketball machine, huge connect four, foosball, and air hockey). They have multiple T.V.s spread out all around the bar if you want a bar to go watch the game. Sometimes they even have live music that has been pretty good. One major pro about this bar is that the space is huge. No matter how crowded it has gotten, I've always felt like I could breathe. They have vaulted ceilings and even a nice outdoor patio area, that also has a few games and T.V.s. It is a great place to go both in the summer and the winter, or really anytime the weather isn't nice too, considering they can accommodate a very large crowd. It is also in a really great location, right next to the light rail. I have never had their food here, so I can not provide any insight on that. However, their drink are very good (4/5). They have your standard beers and their cocktails are very generic but good as well. Nothing to rave about, but nothing to be angry about either. Their prices are pretty fair for what you get. The biggest con here (similar to what a few other yelpers wrote) would be the bathroom attendant. BEWARE. Every time it is just extremely awkward because I would just like to go in there in peace, wash my hands, and get out. But she is always pushy about giving me a towel to dry my hands or offering me mints, etc. that are not free/would need to give a tip. I really think this aspect is unnecessary for this bar, however, the bathrooms are always extremely clean which is a plus. Definitely give this place a try if you have not already, especially if you have a big group and need a place to go! If you are looking for a laid-back place to watch the games, look elsewhere. If you plan to sit down & enjoy yourself, go outside away from the hustle & bustle or still, look elsewhere. If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is racist. I've experienced many prejudice events at this establishment. A bartender ignored me as I waited for my drink. When a party of white patrons approached the bar she immediately served them. I pointed this out to her and she responded "I'll get to you!" Rudely. Slate is interesting to say the least. They have shared entry with Oak Room and a common bar area. There is no cover for Slate. The outside area makes for great people watching since it is aligned with the entry line. I do wish there was more outdoor seating. There are plenty of billiard and ping pong tables. There is a connect four type game, skeeball, basketball, air hockey, jenga, and fusball. The only downside is that some games only take change... I mean really, who is carrying around a pocket full of quarters. Drinks were solid and service was quick by the bartenders. The bathroom lady was not pushy or rude as others mentioned. She actually didn't even speak to me. She did keep the bathrooms clean. What makes Slate so interesting is that there is no "vibe". When I say that, I mean that you can literally throw anything on and not feel out of place. People were dressed for going to a nightclub, for going on a run, for hanging out at a beach bar, etc. There are no fears of being overdressed or underdressed. So... I was told by a security guard that and I quote " There is a high top sneaker policy dress code" so the security guard said I had to pay him $20 to get in. $20 for wearing shoes. Let me start by saying I'm from NYC. upon visiting my friend we got a green tea shaker. We took the sub-par (at best) shot and come to find out she charged us BY SHOT. She ended up charging $7 per shot for 8 shots. Again keep in mind I'm from NYC, one, if not the biggest, mecca in the world and they charged me $7 for a shittly mixed green tea shot in a packed nc bar . If you have to MIX a shot it should be charged by SHAKER. Not to mention the bartender was extremely rude when I questioned her pricing and said "idk where the fuck you're from"...
