If you go, be aware it's a no-frills operation. Little more than a shack in a pasture and a rattletrap van. No changing facility and no running water. It's not a place for lodge-pampering, but you can't beat it for a family-friendly, unplugged day outside.

Our experience wasn't great - but I think that's largely because from the online photos we were expecting something closer to what we've experienced back home at our local climbing gyms. The whole facility is much more catered to serious climbers than kids. I was amazed watching some of the adult folks who came in and tried the huge bolder walls. We came in about 2 in the afternoon. It took almost 30 minutes just to get checked in, rental equipment, MANY statements about how my children could be harmed or die, and then a whole bunch of instruction on how to do the harnesses. That was new for us - every other climbing gym we've been to has staff to assist children with this. Then we were faced with the fact that there are only 5 climbing paths that have safety harnesses - this didn't end up being too much of an issue because no other kids came in, so my boys had free-reign to swap between the paths, but if there had been more kids - I anticipate we'd have been waiting around a lot to take turns. Also my arthritis was quite unhappy with me after over an hour of fastening harnesses. If we end up back in town, would we do it again? Maybe - the pricing was fair, and the boys did end up enjoying it. But if you're looking for a child-specific activity, that's not really what the vibe of this place is.

We had an afternoon tee time at 2:30 and just about had the course to ourselves. It took us until the 15th hole to catch groups in front of us and we never saw anyone playing behind us. Their twilight rates made the course relatively inexpensive. As far as the actual course goes, it's absolutely beautiful. The scenery is amazing as you play many holes right along New River. It was peaceful and relaxing to hear the sound of the moving water. The course played so well. Some holes were a little tough, but I'd expect no different since it's a Pete Dye design (RIP). This course had been on my state-by-state golf course bucket list for a long time so I was glad to have gotten to check it off. I could see myself going on a trip to go play there again down the road!

One of the flatter courses I've ever been to as well. The routing is very well done and the river can come into play quickly on a few holes. Not many trees except on the edges of the property. Pete Dye uses mounding (eyebrows) on the far side of his fairway bunkers to play tricks with you visually. I actually liked it. From above they seem like little dabs of paint on a beautiful canvas. If you are at the far side of one, it's easy to get out but you can also roll against that raised face and have to go out sideways. Honestly sometimes playing down the wrong hole is the easier way to get to your green. All the holes are memorable but take the time to climb some stairs to get to some of the raised tee boxes for the championship tees, they have the best views. As with most Pete Dye tracks, the greens have shaved sides where you golf ball can end up far below the level of the green so be careful. Middle of the green isn't a bad place to be. Up above (maybe 80+ feet above the course?) you have the clubhouse. The pro shop was decently stocked but the person working there seemed more annoyed by any questions I had about the merchandise and pricing. The starter, however, was excellent. The practice green gives you a good sense of what you will face on the course. There is also a practice chipping green/bunker area and a small driving range. There seemed to be a learning center on the far side as well. I played as a single on a summer Sunday afternoon and got around in 2 hour and 20 minutes. Had to play through two groups but that's making good time. Next time I hope to walk this course. The only brutal part would be the long climb back up the hill. I definitely hope to be back.

They do not allow ANY alcohol on the boat. That goes for the driver and all passengers. They WILL check your coolers. This time we were able to rent their "Funtoon" on the 4th of July. We had 4 adults and 3 kids. The boat featured multiple adirondack chairs, a propane grill, swim platform, and best of all a porta-potty. The porta potty made boating all day with 3 kids bearable, but let's be honest...the adults enjoyed it as well. We rented a towable for the kids. The boat only has a 90HP engine and is "blocked" at the top of the throttle so you need to temper expectations. We had an issue with a tear in our tube, but it was quickly taken care of back at the dock. The staff replaced it with a new chariot style tube. We had a great time on the lake. We came out of the dock and went left to anchor and swim. We took the time to fix hamburgers and hot dogs while stopped. We then went a tubed for a long time and ended up at Rock House Marina. They had some live music, so it was nice to get off the boat and relax for a bit. Overall a great day... Filled up with gas at the end of the day and back to the campground.

Park day use areas close down at 10 PM. According to the Internet, they only close these fishing areas at 10 PM for daytime visitors but last registered campers fish all night. At 10PM, we were asked to leave the fishing pier. I mentioned what the Internet said and the ranger seemed baffled and said that it's not true so we had to leave. He did say he would look into it because it was important to him that people had the right info. Problem is, during the summer, in this part of the country, the water gets hot and the fish go deep. Being a bank angler, it's impossible to catch any catfish during the day, they only come shallow at night. The bass fishing is the same. Fishermen and hunters pay for the bulk of what it costs to keep these parks operational yet when we would like to use them, we get the shaft. This quote is from the VA Outdoors Management : A lot of our funding to help conserve wildlife and habitat comes from public spending on things like fishing and hunting licenses, tags, or stamps, boat registrations, and via a federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition. Those sources of financial support have helped us protect hundreds of species and their habitat for over 100 years, but there's always more we can do for Virginia's wildlife. That's where you come in. You too can become a steward of the outdoors by supporting our work or working with us -- whether you hunt, fish, and boat or simply enjoy the outdoors. So, you can see what I'm saying. It is not right or fair that everyone else gets to do what they want but we flip the bill for it. Then our rights keep getting tanked. They put hiking trails and bike trails and beaches for swimming, but keep taking away hunting and fishing rights and they keep raising the prices. Hunters and fishermen are always on the bottom of the list of whom these people cater to. It's not fair or just. At the very least, we should be able to fish when we want especially when that is the only time those fish will bite!!!

In summer, swimming and boating are more likely the activities du jour, and it appears to be an excellent place for such activities.
