Things really peaked when our assigned parking spot was taken by a party guest after we came back from dinner, and the "emergency" contact basically said, "Good luck--there's a party going on." Nobody in the office, of course. The cabins themselves? Think sad summer camp meets thrift store chic--hot, musty, and uncomfortable, with a creaky bed and WiFi that gave up faster than we did. The location has so much potential, but, unfortunately is neglected by an owner who doesn't care about you or your stay. In fact, she passed by my family a few times and did not appear to be friendly. If you're looking for peace and nature, this place might deliver--just not when the owner's throwing herself a bash like it's Coachella.

Sitah and Dale (the owners) and their staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Their affable mien, as well as their superb culinary skills, made our stay memorable and deeply satisfying. We chose the East Room. It is lovingly decorated, spacious, and well-furnished. The queen size bed, desks, sofa, mini-fridge, and heater that warms up the toilet seat provide just about all of the creature comforts one needs. The room also has a fire stove to delight the pyromaniacs and a huge, deep stone soaker tub that can easily accommodate two sumo wrestlers (or half a dozen jockeys). A couple of things to note: (1) There's no cell phone reception (at least not T-Mobile or Sprint). But there is free WiFi. (2) While the windows and skylights may infuse the room with a bright and cheery feel, they may make it hard for you to sleep in late. So don't forget to pack your sleep mask.

I am so delighted to now say that Sitah and Dale made the most special day of my life a total dream. After searching up and down the California coast for a place to get married that felt "right", I was feeling pretty disheartened and was ready to throw in the towel. But, on a whim, we decided to take a trek to Bonny Doon on our way to another venue location and I happened upon the Redwood Croft for a potential place for out of town guests to stay. And wouldn't you know it, they mentioned they host events on their website! My now husband and I took a day and drove down the coast from San Mateo and stopped in to chat with Sitah about her home. The place was (is!) stunning and from the moment we set foot on the grounds, we knew it was the perfect place to get married. Sitah and Dale charge a reasonable amount for the 2 night rental of their whole B&B, plus having nearly 100 people on-site for a wedding! It was so magical to spend the night there before the wedding, then to wake up and eat Sitah's homemade blueberry pancakes (which she made a batch gluten free for me! So amazing!) and spend the rest of the day primping and relaxing before we said "I do!" on their beautiful back lawn and garden. They made everything go so smoothly and they opened their home to my family for the weekend -- it made the wedding weekend just sublime. Before we had our big day, the hub and I spent an impromptu overnighter at the Croft, just to get a feel for it. Our night was peaceful (we stayed in the East Room) and I can't wait to go back now and spend special weekends and anniversaries there. Thank you, Sitah and Dale, for making our day a true piece of romance. Our memories will be sweet and our life will be grand and you had a hand in making that come true for us!

When the Brookdale Lodge renovations are complete, this is going to be an incredible experience…read more I first visited years ago before renovations began. The great Brook Room, is incredible-With different levels, quirky design, an actual mermaid room that I hear will still be operating when renovations are complete-I have few words to describe the enormity and beauty of it. The space has an energy to it, and both times that I was fortunate enough to take a tour, when I left I felt something like nostalgia... I can't wait to see it when it's completed! My recent visit was prompted after learning that it is under new ownership and is being fully renovated/restored. The people orchestrating this are doing an incredible job and it looks like it could be a main attraction for this side of the Bay Area/Santa Cruz. This river that runs through the Brook Room, is where a young girl tragically drowned and is said to haunt the lodge. The crew told me that they are keeping her room as it is in her honor There are allegedly several ghosts that over the years people have encountered. I had the honor of speaking with the crew working on renovations, and they all had stories of their own experiences. There are also elaborate secret tunnels that were used by celebrities and during prohibition! Al Capone, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Henry Ford and Herbert Hoover, Joan Crawford, Hedy Lamar, and many other historical figures and celebrities dined here in its prime. The bar has already been completely restored and is equipped with a sound stage for live performances-And just outside a cute outdoor patio next to the river, which includes the allegedly haunted well... The hotel that is fully renovated is just outside of the main building. I didn't view the rooms, but trust me-It is a huge difference than it was before renovations when I visited years ago. I hear that they are planning to complete the full renovations in 2027, and have the entire space open for business. I can tell you I'll be one of the first visitors:)

WARNING: Unsanitary! This hotel does NOT have full mattress encasements to protect the mattress…read morefrom bedbugs, bodily fluids, spills, or allergens. There is a thin fabric top mattress protector instead of the industry standard six-sided zippered mattress encasement. Room 223 and room 114 have stains on both sides of the mattresses. Make sure you thoroughly inspect your bed as soon as you check-in. These mattresses are a straight up health risk. BYOB! (Bring your own bedding) The service of the staff is wonderful. Every employee I interacted with was incredibly kind, well intentioned, and friendly. The location is breathtaking, the onsite amenities (gift shop, bar, live music, diner) are a nice perk. However, the experience was completely ruined by cheap management. The front desk is not open 24 hours, with no front desk hours posted on the website. I wanted to complain at check-out, but nobody was there at 7am. The hotel will charge you $5 for any unreturned keys. They are not even custom keys with the hotel name, they are generic keycards that cost $0.25 each. I know this because I found the exact keys and keycard envelopes they use on Amazon. I truly think they don't use any hotel supplier companies for anything. The housekeepers are clearly given too many rooms to turnover. When you first walk into the room, things look clean at first glance. However, there are small details that would be easily addressed by a housekeeper with enough time to clean, or a housekeeping manager to inspect the rooms prior to check-in. Empty body wash and shampoo bottles, stains and handprints all over the walls, dead bugs in every corner, cobwebs, sticky floors and countertops, stained sheets, stained mattresses, ripped comforter, food crumbs left in sofa bed. Each room was clearly rushed to get ready with the bare minimum requirements for a turnover being met. Considering every single pillow case and sheet had a stain on it, it's reasonable to suspect that improper detergent is being used. Hotel bedding needs heavy duty industrial-grade detergent, not the typical soaps you would use at home. Experienced travelers will notice a lack of that classic "hotel smell" that's a result of the cleaning solutions used. The most important thing management cheaped out on, and THE MOST DISGUSTING part of this place, is that this is the ONLY hotel I have ever seen without a proper mattress protector. Thats right, any bodily fluids, bed bugs, mites, lice, fleas, pet dander, biohazards, etc can get right into the mattress you are sleeping directly on top of. Oh, and per the policy on their website, there are NO refunds once you check-in! The poor staff was essentially helpless and unempowered. They really wanted to make things right but had no way of doing so other than offering another set of sheets and a different room, which unfortunately had the same issue. The ADA lift up the stairs in the middle of the property is broken. I watched multiple senior citizens and disabled guests struggle to operate it, only for an employee to inform them it is broken and non-operational. There is not even an out of order sign on it. A wheelchair user was forced to go all the way around the property to get to his room. I felt bad for everyone staying here. Worst of all, and truly the most inefficient, regretful decision a hotel manager can make, is that any discounts or refunds must be individually approved by management. That is penny pinching to the extreme. You should trust and empower your employees to take care of the guest. If you are worried about employees comping too much or comping when unnecessary, give them a guide or some training! Leaving issues unresolved until management can give a thumbs up just results in angry customers and low ratings. Shame on you for not trusting your hardworking staff. Management, do better. Your decisions are an insult to the hotel industry and hospitality staff. Go manage a Super 8 if you want to be that cheap, and leave this beloved historic lodge to an expert.

The bridal area was lovely for getting ready, the groomsmen had a fantastic time in the groom's suite, and the ceremony and reception spaces were perfect. There was even a grassy lawn for the kids to run around on. From our first meeting, Elyse was incredibly responsive and helpful with my countless questions. She ensured everything was perfect for our big day. We got married at Hilltop Hacienda, and the day went off without a hitch. My husband and I didn't have to worry about any details because the staff had everything under control. They were friendly and helpful to all our guests, who couldn't stop raving about the perfect day. The views were gorgeous, and the ceremony and reception spaces were stunning. The bartending staff were so kind and made everyone feel like old friends. The food was phenomenal, with many delicious options for our guests. The entire staff made sure everything flowed smoothly from one moment to the next. We genuinely had the BEST DAY EVER, thanks to the Kennolyn team. Elyse and Deirdre ensured everything went well and helped calm any nerves I had. The venue is gorgeous, and it was the perfect place for my outdoor wedding. There is a redwood grove or great lawn facing distant views of the Pacific Ocean that are both beautiful options for a ceremony. The patio facing the lawn is perfect for dinner, and the indoor courtyard is stunning and great for cocktails and dancing. We didn't use the Hacienda itself much except for guests who wanted to sit by the fire (it's a good backup plan for inclement weather). The bridal house is amazing and accommodates many people for getting ready (multiple rooms and bathrooms, living/dining areas, with a gorgeous patio with the same amazing views out to the ocean). There is also a separate Casita with a bathroom for the groom's party to get ready. There are so many beautiful natural and architectural places for photographs as well. The landscaping is beautiful, so you don't need to spend money on many extra florals. Weddings have exclusive use of the venue, which makes it really private and intimate. The Spring Promo deal was a great value and included buffet catering/cake/dessert, alcohol package, DJ/MC, tables/chairs/etc, ceremony arbor, some florals (it was enough given the landscaping), taxes/tips. The deal is for 100 guests, and when my group ended up being half of that, Andrea (Events Manager) was so kind and tried to give us more value for the money: double the variety of passed appetizers than was initially included in the package and adding orchids (my favorite flower) to the florals. The all-inclusive nature of the package was so amazing for not having to worry about each of these things individually. Since the catering was included and food was very important to us, I was initially nervous to sign the contract before tasting the food. My family and I were so happy on our Tasting Day when the food was excellent, and everything we tried was delicious (and I think we have pretty high standards for food)! They were also so accommodating of dietary restrictions and preferences. Since our package was a served buffet, the vegetarian/vegans were given their own plates separately. The cake and assorted dessert were also delicious (and they were willing to make a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting as we requested). The DJ/MC (Courtney Helms) was assigned from Sound in Motion, and we got along great. He did a wonderful job too - I danced the whole night! He was also very accommodating with including French music that we compiled (my husband is French). Finally, I cannot say enough wonderful things about Andrea (Event Manager), Elyse (Wedding Coordinator), and the entire staff! I did not have a wedding planner, and they filled the job beautifully. I was so impressed with their communication. They responded promptly and warmly to every email, line-by-line, answering all my questions for months! They were so supportive and patient, and they seemed as invested as I was in having a wonderful wedding day and making everyone happy and comfortable. We arrived at the hotel at about 430PM...after the posted 4 PM check in time and were told our $450 room still wasn't ready. While waiting, staff directed us toward their beach access without mentioning that it was completely flooded and unusable. my Kids wanted out of the car and to play in the sand so we walked around the block to the public access instead, where I slipped, fractured my foot, and ended up in the ER. We immediately returned to the hotel, before 5pm... explained what happened, and left for the hospital without ever occupying our room. I then spent weeks calling and being told the owners would contact me. They never did. After I finally sent a formal written complaint, management acknowledged in writing that our room had not been ready on time, but instead of refunding a room we never used, they offered a 50% hotel credit that expires in 60 days. My injury is serious enough that I won't even be medically cleared to return to work within those 60 days, much less plan another vacation to this hotel. I explained that their credit was literally unusable for me and again requested a refund. They stopped responding altogether. I'm not claiming the hotel is responsible for a fall that occurred on public property. I'm angry about how they treated us afterward. We paid over $450, our room wasn't ready when it should have been, we never used it because I had to go to the ER, and after weeks of chasing them for help, their solution was essentially a time limited coupon to come back and give them more business. Absolutely unacceptable customer service.

Annie also provides bicycles, so we literally were on the move the entire time. The cottage itself is ready to move in, with everything and more you could need. Very comfortable bed, lovely outdoor area, and did I mention- a HOT TUB! Annie herself is the coolest, completely non-imposing, but so open, kind and welcoming, that anything you need while you are there she happily and quickly answers and supplies. I am getting very sad writing this, as I do not know the next time we will be able to get to the cottage- you had better not be booked when I next want to go! =) Seriously, the ONLY place we will stay ever again in Santa Cruz. Can not recommend highly enough.
