The hotel is fairly new, less than a year old, and in excellent condition. The rooms show a lot of attention to detail: a well‑stocked minibar with a full bottle of wine, robes, slippers, and a laundry bag. At these prices, you expect that level of quality, and they deliver. The pool and jacuzzi area is very nice, with a bar and restaurant right by the water. One level up, there's a sundeck with fire pits where you can relax, watch the sunset, and enjoy the beach views. At night, turndown service includes a small bottle of after‑sun serum and slippers placed neatly by the bed. The pool service is excellent. There are plenty of chairs and towels, and staff check in regularly. During the day, they even brought around small boats of frozen grapes, a simple but very nice touch. Make time for the gym. It's small, but packed with equipment, including an Equinox Workout Mirror, which was fun to try out. Valet parking is pricey at $65 per night. If you arrive during a slower time, you can park at a meter for about $14 per night. Meters are free from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., so take advantage of that if you can.

I didn't love that they said we had to pay $200 to guarantee an early check-in (for the room's pricepoint, that feels like it should have been included), so we opted not to. Everything was quite nice, but I can't say that it was worth the pricepoint. Not a bad experience, but everything felt like it should have been half the price.

Instead of apologizing or offering to move me to another room or address the situation, he simply told me, "They're everywhere," and that the hotel had no control over it. The spider was never addressed, and there was no effort made to resolve the issue or make me feel safe. That wasn't the only problem. The room had an excessive number of flies, the walls were dirty, and the bed sheets were torn. The overall cleanliness and condition of the room were unacceptable. I understand that hotels in certain areas may encounter wildlife, but the complete lack of concern or customer service is what made this experience so disappointing. If you want a clean room and expect staff to take your concerns seriously, I would strongly recommend staying somewhere else.

Sitah and Dale (the owners) and their staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Their affable mien, as well as their superb culinary skills, made our stay memorable and deeply satisfying. We chose the East Room. It is lovingly decorated, spacious, and well-furnished. The queen size bed, desks, sofa, mini-fridge, and heater that warms up the toilet seat provide just about all of the creature comforts one needs. The room also has a fire stove to delight the pyromaniacs and a huge, deep stone soaker tub that can easily accommodate two sumo wrestlers (or half a dozen jockeys). A couple of things to note: (1) There's no cell phone reception (at least not T-Mobile or Sprint). But there is free WiFi. (2) While the windows and skylights may infuse the room with a bright and cheery feel, they may make it hard for you to sleep in late. So don't forget to pack your sleep mask.

I am so delighted to now say that Sitah and Dale made the most special day of my life a total dream. After searching up and down the California coast for a place to get married that felt "right", I was feeling pretty disheartened and was ready to throw in the towel. But, on a whim, we decided to take a trek to Bonny Doon on our way to another venue location and I happened upon the Redwood Croft for a potential place for out of town guests to stay. And wouldn't you know it, they mentioned they host events on their website! My now husband and I took a day and drove down the coast from San Mateo and stopped in to chat with Sitah about her home. The place was (is!) stunning and from the moment we set foot on the grounds, we knew it was the perfect place to get married. Sitah and Dale charge a reasonable amount for the 2 night rental of their whole B&B, plus having nearly 100 people on-site for a wedding! It was so magical to spend the night there before the wedding, then to wake up and eat Sitah's homemade blueberry pancakes (which she made a batch gluten free for me! So amazing!) and spend the rest of the day primping and relaxing before we said "I do!" on their beautiful back lawn and garden. They made everything go so smoothly and they opened their home to my family for the weekend -- it made the wedding weekend just sublime. Before we had our big day, the hub and I spent an impromptu overnighter at the Croft, just to get a feel for it. Our night was peaceful (we stayed in the East Room) and I can't wait to go back now and spend special weekends and anniversaries there. The Castle House and Gardens was the last place we looked at and we knew it would be the most perfect, picturesque and enchanted woodland setting for our outdoor wedding. It has lush, wild gardens that remind me of the Secret Garden. There's a beautiful redwood grove where we had our ceremony and a poolside courtyard with two outdoor fireplaces, perfect for dining and dancing, where we had the reception. It was great to have the ceremony and reception at the same place. The Castle House is a historic estate located in the Santa Cruz Mountain Community of Bonny Doon. It's bordered by beautiful redwood forests and just 10 minutes from the ocean. The family that lives there were the most gracious hosts for our event and went to extra care to make sure the grounds looked stunning on our wedding day. They own the Bonny Doon Garden Company and grow all of the flowers for their floral design business organically in their home gardens. It was really cool because my bouquets and centerpieces all came from the garden where I got married! We got so many compliments about the venue from our guests and everyone kept asking me, "How did you find this place?" I definitely recommend this place to other brides if you are looking for a unique, non-cookie cutter type venue full of natural beauty and rustic charm.

I did notice some homeless folks sleeping on the lawn but that's a real problem for the city of Santa Cruz. I suck at dancing so instead I left my wife to the class and I explored the grounds and wrote this review. I learned that Louden Nelson was a slave born in 1800 North Carolina who eventually (through a hard life of servitude) gained his freedom. He ended up in Santa Cruz in 1856 where he was able to buy a house and some property. When he passed away in 1860 he left all his land to the city of Santa Cruz to be used for education for children. This place is the result of that generosity many years later. In my stroll through the grounds I saw seniors playing ping pong, a little girl practicing ballet, a group of younger folks learning a dance in the auditorium. This place is a real asset to the community. So skip past the 1 star whining and get down to what this place really is, a great resource for the community.
