I think their 1hr massage is worth $100 all-in (massage skills here are good), but the weird games around tipping just make the experience kinda unpleasant. I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and think they do it this way to minimize taxes for the practitioner. In a better world we'd just pay a flat rate with tip included.

I've been going here for years, as it's convenient, inexpensive, and the massages are great. Even…read moreas the prices increased, I still felt it was worth it. But I went yesterday for a 90 minute massage ($93). Before I went, they called me to tell me that a $35 minimum tip was required. And that last time I only tipped $25. First of all, why are they recording our tip amount? Does the value of service depend on what we tipped previously? Secondly, a $35 minimum tip on a $93 massage is outrageous. Then when I was in the massage room, the sign states that $40 minimum tip is expected for a 90 minute massage. That's insane. That's almost 50%. For massages, a 20% tip is normal and 25% is for great service. Almost 50% is beyond ridiculous. There are no frills or extras here. So the majority of the cost should be going to the masseuse, right? So why are they asking, no, requiring so much for a tip?!! Also, as the customer, don't I get to choose how much I feel is earned based on the service each time?! I know cost of living has increased but then maybe their salaries need to increase. Not demand an outrageously high minimum tip. If this is how this business will continue to operate, I will not be returning. Which is unfortunate since I've loved this place for years.

Very disappointing experience…read more I visited with another person, and we both requested 30-minute foot massages. Even though I checked in before the person I was with, they were started first and I didn't get taken back until about 5-7 minutes later. The chair I was assigned was broken and wouldn't recline properly, making it difficult to comfortably use the foot bath. The cleanliness also left a lot to be desired. There was visible dust and debris in the chair, and it ended up getting on my shirt and shorts. As for the massage itself, it barely felt like a massage. I was assigned to the woman with the bob haircut, and the entire session consisted mostly of lotion being rubbed on my feet and shins with very light pressure. There was very little technique, attention to sore areas, or actual foot massage work. At $40, I expected a clean environment, functioning equipment, and a relaxing massage. Unfortunately, this was one of the weakest foot massages I've ever received. Between the late start, broken chair, lack of cleanliness, and poor-quality massage, I left feeling like I wasted my money. I would not return and cannot recommend this place based on my experience.

Omg. Haven't been here in years.. but my favorite massage therapist Dada started working here…read more. FYI..it's difficult to find a great massage therapist..I've been to a number of places on the Westside & Berkeley.. And Julie is the best massage I Ever had.. Go for 90 mins, if you have back problems.. Julie will make you feel rejuvenated..and she will know what areas you need targeted after getting to know you.. Best description I can give of a massage is its lazy yoga

Probably one of the strongest massages (if you like that) in the area. The deep tissue is a Thai…read moreflavored version. The therapists are on a rotation of some sort so it may be difficult to schedule a specific person unless you decide to schedule a few days ahead. Having different therapists is fun though; each worker has their own style. You might get a couple's room by yourself or a standard room. No heated massage tables but that's usually fine. The temperature is comfortable and there's ambient music/nature noise sounds playing. In terms of customization, you can more or less say what you DON'T want but saying where to focus doesn't lead to much extra on the trouble spots. To be clear, the best of them will give you a massage you'll actively hate (unless you're a masochist) and if you get a particularly strong therapist you'll be sore the next day. However, after that you will feel limber and pain free for a bit once the DOMS from having your muscles kneaded like dough go away. Three notes: if you park early enough and the valet guys aren't around just toss the orange cone to the side. The bathroom is a separate part of the building and they'll give you a key. Buy the gift certificates--flat rate and if you buy ten massages you get two free; you must use them all in a year from the time of purchase. TL;DR the worst you'll get from here is a satisfying massage and the best will make you feel like your muscles and joints just got rejuvenated by a couple months. Heavena is a bit more pricey than some of their neighbors but the therapists put in the work and if you don't say they made you groan or try to shift away some I'll either call you a liar or assume you have a back made of concrete.

If you're looking for an excellent traditional Chinese massage without the expensive spa atmosphere or prices, MD Foot Massage is hard to beat. Highly recommended!
