Recently received a message from the owner of this company. He had read my review and wanted to make a wrong/mistake right. He offered me a free 1/2 cord of wood for free. There was no catch. We had several communications and settled on a delivery date. Who ever delivered the wood did an excellent job stacking it. The lengths were cut more even than I have ever received from someone. Haven't tried to burn it yet since I am still using wood from last year. The wood looks good though. Looks like it is ready to burn. Ordered half a cord of seasoned wood. I got about that, but the wood is far from seasoned. It won't even burn. I've called a few times, but nobody well return my call. I tested the wood it has a moisture level of 35% needs to be 21% to safely burn. I was ripped off. Update: Skip reached out to me after reading this review. He informed me the wood was delivered by his ex business partner Chris Snow. After checking, we did in fact pay Chris Snow. Skip delivered me enough wood to burn for the rest off the winter. As a consumer, seems that being very busy would be a great problem to have. Although I had a good reference, Skip is not the person if you expect to be treated fairly. A phone call to Skip for wood delivered before the forecasted snow $115. If I wait until after the weekend (it's Tuesday) I get the fair price of $85. Buyer beware of price gouging!! Next phone call was 4 times the amount of wood, delivered tomorrow for Skip's "fair snow pricing". I hope that an unsuspecting consumer doesn't get taken advantage of by this company and the price hike due to forecasted weather. read more

Take this as one person's point of view on a subjective subject. Ordered 1 cord of seasoned hardwood, received 2/3 (at best) of a cord of mostly branches, and SHORT No kidding 10-12 inches, cut pieces, mostly dry-rotted. I have stacked MANY a cord of firewood in my time, and this is BAR NONE the saddest excuse for a $230 load of firewood I personally have ever seen. I ordered a full cord of hickory at the agreed price of $300.00 plus $50.00 for delivery. Skips trailer was 12X6X2 which equals 144 cubic feet so I thought I was safe. Turns out the wood was loose versus stacked in the trailer. After carefully stacking the wood it measured 8X3X3 feet which equals 72 cubic feet. Skip's web site states "The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is responsible for the regulation of fuel wood sales. The Regulation defines a cord as the amount of wood contained in a space of 128 cubic feet. Skips Firewood Service website states "Dedicated, Loyal, and Trustworthy". It also states "We Treat You with Respect". My experience proves they do not practice what they preach! I wish I had read the Yelp reviews prior to doing business with Skips because it is clear they are dishonest people. read more

I had a similar experience to the one that most people leaving reviews has had. We contacted Skips for our wood fired restaurant and he brought us samples of cured hardwood. Once we decided to move forward with two chords ($675) he brought the first delivery of hard wood which was stacked by my staff, the second delivery was delivered during dinner service and was not inspected. Later it was found out that it was wet poplar, unusable for our purposes. (after he had cashed his check).Upon dinner service the next day we were set back by having to heat the wood fired oven for 4 hours to get it to temperature, using an excessive amount of wood. He requested that the check be made out to him personally "Harry Rogers". Harry does not respond to repeated telephone calls. I believe that this is done on purpose. He did not leave an invoice for the delivery. I've filed a complaint with the Attorney General of Virginia Consumer Protection Section and have relayed my experience to other business' in the Richmond area that utilize wood so that they can avoid having the same experience we did. read more

We were recently scammed by Skip and Chris R. who has commented above. Ordered a cord of seasoned wood over six weeks ago that is wet and green. Skip has been entirely unresponsive after multiple complaints/requests for resolution. He won't refund our money or take away bogus wood. He told us to make our check out to Chris R, which we did, and Chris won't refund the money either. So we've been wronged by Skip and Chris and will be filing claims with Better Business Bureau and taking them to court if necessary. The worst, most dishonest experience we've ever had with ANYONE in Virginia. Shame on them both. Avoid them AT ALL COSTS. read more

After carefully stacking the wood in my woodshed it measured 8X3X3 feet which equals 72 cubic feet. I contacted Skips repeatedly and have text messages from them that they would deliver another half cord of wood "for my trouble". The text message address is standardryder@yahoo.com and phone number is 804.247.7466. On 3/16/2015 two men who work for Skips brought a small pickup load of red oak (not hickory) and admitted it was not a full pickup load which usually equals half a cord. I took the delivery and contacted Skips and they said they were out of hickory and would discount my next purchase. After stacking the oak in a separate location it measured 3X3X3 which equals 27 cubic feet. I contacted Skips and they said my measurements were flawed even though the two men on the second delivery agreed that my 8X3X3 stack of hickory was properly measured and accounted for. One guy said he wondered why Skips instructed them to deliver the red oak the second time because he was present the first time when the hickory was delivered. I do not burn green wood so all of the delivered wood is still untouched waiting for Skip to come measure which he said he would do jointly with the Virginia Department Of Agriculture, Weights and Measures, Division Of Consumer Protection who I plan on contacting today. Skip's web site states "The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is responsible for the regulation of fuel wood sales. According to their standards, all bulk deliveries of firewood for home heating must be measured in cords, or fractions or multiples of a cord. Section 15.2 of VDACS Regulation 115-04-04 specifies that wood for use as fuel in bulk form "shall be advertised, offered for sale and sold only by measure, using the term 'cord' and fractional parts of a cord, or the cubic meter."Virginia law prohibits the use of terms such as "face cord," "rack," or "pile" when advertising, offering for sale, or selling wood for use as fuel. If the buyer visually inspects a truckload of wood and agrees to a selling price for that load, the term "truckload" may be used. A standard pick-up truck usually holds about two-thirds of a cord. The Regulation defines a cord as the amount of wood contained in a space of 128 cubic feet with the pieces ranked in rows touching and parallel to each other, stacked compactly. A standard cord measures 8 feet long by 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. The Regulation also requires presentation of a delivery ticket or sales invoice stating quantity and price upon delivery by the seller to the purchaser. Failure to comply with this Regulation is a Class "A" misdemeanor. The law also requires that the seller present a delivery ticket or sales invoice upon delivery of any non-packaged fireplace or stove wood. In addition to the seller's name and address, the ticket must contain the purchaser's name and address, the date of delivery, the quantity delivered, the quantity upon which the price is based (if it differs from the delivery quantity), and the total price of the amount delivered". Skips evidently broke the law because they did not provide a delivery ticket or invoice and only delivered 99 cubic feet of wood of which 27 cubic feet was red oak versus the hickory we agreed to. I wish we had read the reviews here before we ordered firewood from Skip. We ordered a cord of wood delivered and paid 220 in cash. after we stacked it all, it was clear that we had maybe half a cord at best. When we tried to burn it, we realized it wasn't seasoned long enough either. I called skip and told him we were shorted and he tried to tell me I was wrong. I persisted and he said he would call me back shortly when he got to his office, he never called back. This company is a total rip off, buy your wood elsewhere and pay the extra to have it stacked so you know how much you're getting. read more

I ordered a half cord of seasoned wood from Skip. They arrived at 10 pm one night in a pickup truck and immediately asked if I had a water jug they could take with them because their water pump was about to go out on their truck. Should have been a sign of things to come...They began to unload and stack the wood and delivered about 10% of it and then said they would need to come back the next day to complete the delivery when they had a wheelbarrow. I said OK and made full payment. Guess who hasn't come back or responded to e mails I have sent? The wood they did deliver was so green it wouldn't even burn. I shared this with Skip, as well as with a picture of my "fire" - also no response. I finally told him if I didn't hear back I would file a claim with the BBB. That claim was filed today as he has been non-responsive, took my money, and didn't deliver my wood. DO NOT BUY WOOD FROM THIS GUY - RIP OFF! read more
