Since Rushmoor opened a few years ago it has steadily grown in popularity thanks to the friendly…read moreowners, the clever set-up (there are childrens' toys, a bouncy castle and a play area next to the cafe - genius!) and the attraction of the animals themselves. Rushmoor is a farm park with tea rooms - there are sheep, ducks, goats, horses and hens outside, and inside there are rabbits, owls, chinchillas, guinea pigs and all manner of small, scrabbly animals to keep children entranced. Rushmoor have a fantastic party room, which can be hired for a small fee, and they also provide party food from the tea rooms so it's an excellent venue for a children's party. Although the one we had there was blighted by near-constant rain! It's not really a place to visit when there's rain

My mum has taken my eldest daughter here on several occassions and loves the place (as does my…read moredaughter). It's very close to Louth, so not as far to travel as somewhere like Rand Farm, and its very reasonably priced. There are loads of animals to see and the people who run the farm are extremely friendly. My daughter actually fed the lambs on one of her visits and still talks about it to this day. I suppose its only criticism would be its smallness, but this could be considered a good thing too. It's a shame that more people don't go there to be honest.

We had a family outing to this zoo, not the easiest place to find in deepest darkest Fens of…read moreLincolnshire but the sat nav got us there along some VERY bumpy but absolutely dead straight roads. (They have a free bus which picks you up and drops you in Skegness if you're holidaying there) The signage when we first entered was not very clear I had to ask a young reception what deals they did and he didn't quite understand. Anyway, they did the usual two plus two family deals plus we had two other kids and it all came to about £35 The obviously new entrance is very smart with a permanent' 'tent like cover with chairs under it for eating and coffees etc. The new restaurant ahd loads of space and was very reasonably priced with the kids all having some kind of special milk shake only £1.50 each and me the Mrs having a nice Latte for about £3.20 for two cups. An essential is to buy at least one bag of monkey nuts(only 50p a bag) and lots of millet seeds as you are actively encouraged to feed a lot of the birds as you go round. The Parrott zoo is actually a sanctuary for birds which have either outlived their owners are are no longer wanted. There are literally hundreds of different parrots. I can't remember all the names but one huge enclosure must have over a hundred what 'Macaws' in it all screaming to be fed with the nuts you've bought. They will take the nuts out of your hand and they call out 'Hello' and all the other parrot phrases. Another huge aviary has a massive collection of African grey parrots which are just as keen to be fed. It's great interactive stuff and my teenage kids LOVED it . they went round three times and cost me a fortune in nuts but well worth it. They had to be dragged out at the end. There was a large walk through aviary which had loads of smaller birds and parrots in it. A couple of these came and sat on my shoulders and took peanuts from me but were really nice and just cleared off once they had been fed. Another bird undid the shoe laces on my shoes (kids though it was great as every one else got left alone!) . great fun There are all sorts of other parrots in the zoo as well as those I have mentioned. As well as birds there's also animals. A favourite with the kids was the Lemur enclosure, they are totally oblivious to humans and play around like no-ones there. It's the same in the impressive Meerkat pen where a huge family played while one Meerkat kept guard atop a purpose built security tower. This was a great afternoon out. We were in there about two hours and it really does leave you with great memories

As a child I was taken on a car trip in the Licolnshire Wolds. We came to a place I later found out…read moreto be the hamlet of Girsby. I spent the next 25 years trying to find it again then one day drove round a corner and there it was. I remembered the gates,a closed high metal set with columns either side surmounted by stone foxes. We walked round the sides and onto a drive of what was once a big estate drive. We picked apples and brambles and found a terrace and part of a wall and arch..obviously all that was left of a great house, and beehives. Burgh on Bain is a village and a parish on the River Bain, seven miles west of Louth and 19 miles northeast of Lincoln. The parish covered about 1,870 acres of the Wold Hills in 1842 and includes the hamlet of Girsby, just north of the village of Burgh on Bain. By 1900, the parish boundaries had shrunk the acreage to about 1,600 acres By car, take the A157 between Wragby and Louth. It passes through the centre of Burgh on Bain, just east of the B1225 trunk road. The house was demolished in the 60s supposedly because of RAF or Army officers billeted there severley damaging it. In 1842, the sole landowner was the Rev. William FOX, lord of the manor. In 1872 and 1882, the sole landowner was Captain John Wilson FOX, lord of the manor. In 1900 and 1913, the sole landowner was John St. Vigor FOX, lord of the manor. Girsby Hall, north of the village of Burgh on Bain, was the residence of the Rev. William FOX in 1842. It had long been the seat of the LISTER family, and the PINDAR family before that. St Helen Church Burgh on Bain has fox monuments and a grave in the churchyard to a butler to the foxes. I had to get a key from a nearby house to go in and it was huge. South Wold (southwold) hunt..foxes.now I assume goneThe Southwold - or sometimes the South Wold - has had that name since 1822 and the Rawnsleys of Well and the aptly-named Fox family of Girsby were long linked with it. The Lincolnshire village and parish of Burgh on Bain, or Burgh upon Bain, is about seven miles west from Louth and 19 miles north-east from Lincoln. The parish includes the hamlet of Girsby, just north of the village. To sum up the history: The Anglican Church, which was restored in 1872 by the lord of the manor Captain J.W. Fox, is dedicated to St. Helen. For many years Girsby Hall was the seat of the Lister family, and the Pindar family before them, and St Helen's Church contains monuments to both of these families. In the early 1800's the hall was the residence of the Rev. William Fox and from 1872 to the mid-1880's the sole landowner was Captain John Wilson Fox. In the early 1900's the sole landowner and lord of the manor was John St. Vigor Fox. A wonderful place to see, unless that is just personal to me, but worth recording. The gates may not last forever.

Nestling at the tip of the Lincolnshire Wolds in a picture postcard setting is Claythorpe Watermill & Wildfowl Gardens. it is Open daily from March until the end of October and is quite enchanting even though it was pouring with rain when we went. The Bygone Area has memorabilia of milling and agriculture, and Ye Old Bakery depicts the milling and baking side of the Mills history which ceased in the 1970's. or you can choose to sample the catering areas with home fare on offer, delicious cakes and cream teas. The little gift shop and country fare haven is where you can purchase delicious homemade jams, local ice cream and much more. Not only can you visit this little paradise, you can stay here. Millers Cottage sleeps four and is available for weekly lets and short breaks in early and late season. A watermill has been on the site since the Doomsday Book and the current mill was built circa 1721. Claythorpe Watermill sits on the River the Great Eau and a smallbeck also meanders into the Mill Pond. The mill was famous for its bread which was why the two large chimneys were added to the statuesque buildings and it was sent throughout the County by means of the local Claythorpe station which was just a minute away. However when Beeching axed many of the rural railways in the 60's this stopped and the last Miller stopped working here in the 70's. During its history the mill survived three severe fires and during one at the turn of the last century it lost its waterwheel which was replaced by a turbine, which is believed to be the only remaining one in Lincolnshire and to be quite rare. The mill workings are sympathetically displayed to visitors with the use of mannequins and glass panels although not in use anymore. In the early 80's the mill was saved from dereliction and subsequently became Grade II Listed. The existing business of a Wildfowl Gardens/Visitor Centre was established in 1988. This family-run business has subsequently become one of the most renowned tourist attractions in this area of Lincolnshire which is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
