Rushmoor is a farm park with tea rooms - there are sheep, ducks, goats, horses and hens outside, and inside there are rabbits, owls, chinchillas, guinea pigs and all manner of small, scrabbly animals to keep children entranced. Rushmoor have a fantastic party room, which can be hired for a small fee, and they also provide party food from the tea rooms so it's an excellent venue for a children's party. It's very close to Louth, so not as far to travel as somewhere like Rand Farm, and its very reasonably priced. There are loads of animals to see and the people who run the farm are extremely friendly. My daughter actually fed the lambs on one of her visits and still talks about it to this day. I suppose its only criticism would be its smallness, but this could be considered a good thing too. It's a shame that more people don't go there to be honest.

Campaigners fought for years to get Spout Yard recognised and then turned into a park, and what a…read morejob they have done - it's a total asset to the town. It's transformed an area of waste ground into a pretty, sun-trap park complete with an outdoor theatre, childrens' play areas, picnic tables and a little refreshments stall. It's humbling that this facility is staffed by volunteers, and funded by donations. We are lucky enough to live within easy walking distance of Spout Yard and spend a lot of time there in warmer weather. There are sheltered spots for parents to lie in the shade while their children play, and the park is adjacent to a shallow part of the river Lud, where children can paddle when it's hot. It's a gated park, and feels very safe; it's also maintained beautifully. Can't praise it enough.

Then on the amazing value swan pedaloes at only £2.50 for a boat full. We walked through the gardens and looked on at the great splash world for little ones, which is enclosed and full of outside water things to along a man made river which is safe and fun. Didn't see any unruly teenagers or witness any anti social behaviour at all, didn't even see any threatening dogs which is amazing for an inner city park. The animal discovery centre wasn't very good. There wasn't any information about the animals and the walk through aviary had very few birds in it. Also on offer was fishing in a large lake, special hire bikes for disabled, tennis, a 'Khyber pass' ravine for kids to climb and play in. loads of space to play, boating lake for model boats and the pavilion cafe which served a can of Coca cola at only 60p A good couple of hours out

The pets corner is one of the main attractions with lots of rabbits, guinea pigs, goats etc which kids can get up close with. There is also a falconry centre with all manner of birds of prey. The lake is pleasant to walk around and contains Carp, it is possible to buy food to feed them with. They actually come up to the surface and take it out of your hand! The cafe is very nice and very professionally run and serves a wide range of rather nice meals and snacks. Definitely a place to visit.

At the entrance of the park is a lovely, little bird aviary and some flowerbeds that are wonderful to look at all year round. Aside from the aviary, Richmond Park is host to a variety of wildlife which live in the small woods opposite Richmond House. It isn't uncommon to see squirrels, rabbits and other wild birds perching amongst the tree branches or scampering along the ground. A children's park is I believe the focal part of the area, with picnic tables, swings, a sand pit and a smaller section for the younger children. Children and adults of all ages should have no problem having fun in this brilliant use of space. Aside from the children's park and ample picnicking space, weddings also take place here. Richmond House, formerly known as 'The Hollies', hosts a number of wedding receptions each year. Though of course, I haven't married yet, but I'm assured it's a beautiful place to marry in and I don't disagree.

In the summer there are a good number of migratory bird and geese, there were a large number of canadian geese getting a good feed from the kids. ITs nice just to take a walk around the gardens, have a drink in the coffee shop a browes around the gift shops. If you get good weather (I know thats pushing it here in England) in the summer then it is an ideal place to head out with a few friends and enjoy a whole day. There are BBQ areas so why not grab some drinks, set up the BBQ and enjoy a game of frisbee in the Sun :-) Surroundings are great around the park and if you dont fancy walking all the way around then you can also hire a bike for the day from this place, adding to the experience and allowing you enjoy rolling down hills, although remember you need to get back up the other side!

From formal gardens to tennis courts; a skatepark to open playing fields; an amphitheatre to a tearoom; and a play area to two bowling greens, there really is something for everyone. Situated along the south bank of the River Ouse it boasts a car park of its own though it is only a short walk or bus journey from the city centre. Its facilities are of a consistent high quality, and have been celebrated in its award of the Green Flag for Parks every year since 2004. Why not stroll up New Walk from the city centre on the other side, cross the river at the Millennium Bridge and then spend a leisurely time working your way back through the park to central York?
