Campaigners fought for years to get Spout Yard recognised and then turned into a park, and what a job they have done - it's a total asset to the town. It's transformed an area of waste ground into a pretty, sun-trap park complete with an outdoor theatre, childrens' play areas, picnic tables and a little refreshments stall. It's humbling that this facility is staffed by volunteers, and funded by donations.
We are lucky enough to live within easy walking distance of Spout Yard and spend a lot of time there in warmer weather. There are sheltered spots for parents to lie in the shade while their children play, and the park is adjacent to a shallow part of the river Lud, where children can paddle when it's hot. It's a gated park, and feels very safe; it's also maintained beautifully. Can't praise it enough. read more
