My experience with Pennybyrn has spanned 24 years between being an employee and a family member of…read morea resident. From both sides, I can without a doubt share how amazing this community is. My Grandfather became their family and developed the best relationship with his caretakers. I never worried about the care he received, because it was always at the level where I would have cared for him. I expected the best, and he received it. When he passed, his entire household mourned along with me. They will still share an endearing or funny story from their time with him, and it really touches my heart to know their relationship was so strong. Pennybyrn has some of the lowest resident-to-caregiver ratios in retirement living, and this is designed to allow extra time to build relationships, give extra care, and support enjoyment of life and home. As an employee, I can share that this company will go to bat for its team and try to give the best of every penny and benefit possible. Pennybyrn is non-profit, meaning every dollar that comes in goes right back into resident care. When they give annual increases, free meals and amenities, and continue to keep benefit costs some of the lowest in the industry, they have strategically and thoughtfully given to their employees at great expense. Pennbyrn truly loves their team and will do whatever it takes to keep them happy! Please keep in mind that the other reviews listed here are subjective to each person's experience. Pennybyrn isn't perfect, but their mission and values are carried out in everything they do. You can come into the healthcare households right now and sing along to "My Girl" with a live band and dozens of residents singing and dancing along. There is a quality of life here that is unmatched, and the residents deserve to live each day with love, compassion, excellent care, and family. That's what Pennybyrn is all about and they deliver on their mission to "Demonstrate God's love to every life we touch".

I would highly recommend NOT sending someone you love to the rehabilitation facility. They did not…read moregive my mother the care we expected and hoped for. Gina Gordon from Care Patrol was really a savior to me and my family. My father who had been 100%…read moreindependent, amazingly healthy, and still an active writer, researcher, and speaker, had a stroke one day that totally affected the portions of his brain dealing with verbal comprehension. Physically he was not limited but over night, he became a person that has some off the speech and emotionally lability of a toddler while needing round the clock care and MANY adjuncts put in place (safety, new living arrangements, speech therapy, etc.). Plus his medical care network is hundreds of miles away in his primary residence city. Gina helped me - the middle of three sons and Power of Attorney for my Dad - find the right care despite his somewhat unique care profile (physically unlimited, distant geographic medical and familial support system, and all-of-a-sudden significant cognitive deficits). I often felt at my wit's end with nowhere to turn, ignorant to what my dad needed, caught between short-term, expensive, and wanting-to-discharge hospitals/ rehabs, and the wishes (although hard to understand) of my Dad. Not only did Gina know all of the possibilities, but she also had great relationships to the leadership of many different facilities, and thereby was able to help facilitate the "square peg in a round hole" that my Dad and his needs were turning out to be. But, by far the biggest benefits were Gina's kindness to me and my father, patience through millions of questions, advocacy to different facilities and staff (like getting a rehab to keep my Dad a little longer as the next placement location was difficult to finalize), and literally around-the-clock availability. I said to my family many times that "Gina took me off the ledge" meaning that this shocking life event - my Dad's stroke - left me feeling so hopeless and helpless many times...Gina was always there to offer advice and many possible pathways that helped my Dad in his recovery and really improved my mental health and well-being during this stressful time. Care Patrol of Winston-Salem is LITERALLY a life-saver!

Please READ THE REVIEWS! This an under staffed horrible place. They use agencies CNA'S. They can't…read morekeep anyone on staff. Michelle and Amelia were excellent. The worst part for me was seeing those sweet residents setting in front of the TV. I bet in there younger days they never thought in a million years this was what their lives would be like. My father was in skilled nursing. The staff is not the best at all. I personally think they need to retrain their staff to be more compassionate, more loving and caring because one day they will be old and they'll want someone to be kind to them. I just don't like walking and seeing residence sitting in front of the TV and no one talking to them. we were talked to them and they would light up like a lightbulb. You need to have conversations with them and be there for them. I know you have work to do. I would see them hand out the food and I would think to myself I wonder how cold that food is by the time they get it. I'm just so grateful that my father is not in there anymore and I don't have to go in that horrible place anymore. Just always remember look for a good place for your loved ones don't let anybody mistreat them always be an advocate for your loved ones. I just wasn't impressed at all. It just didn't impress me at all. I think they really need to redo or rethink their staffing situation and trained them better. What made me so mad was my mother had to go in there so many times to put my father in a chair or to put him back in bed because he could never get anybody in there to do that for him. He had back pain because the chairs they have in the rooms are horrible. Put comfortable chairs in there for the people to sit in there. They're older they hurt worse. You need to rethink your room situation. The rooms are not big enough for two people. You need to make them all private rooms. It was horrible. You have to keep walking back in front of somebody and they don't have their personal space. I don't think that's right. Please do better that's all we ask is do better.

We often felt like it was "us" against them vs working together. We constantly had to ask for our mom to be bathed, have her teeth brushed and no one ever clipped her nails even after we asked. She was overdosed by their admission. Sheets would be soiled and piled in the shower. No sheets replaced on the bed and family not called so we could bring more sheets. If we hadn't gone by she wouldn't even have had a blanket to cover up with. Clothes often missing. Communication was always lacking between both family and from one shift to the next. No one could ever answer a question directly it was always blame shifting. Often under staffed.

The staff is caring and on the ball. The food is good ( our loved one likes it and I have eaten it several times- quite delicious). They have a wonderful activities department and an on staff pastor who is great. The place is clean and takes good care of our loved one. All department staff are accessible and helpful. We are so thankful for this good place. ( Someone mentioned getting locked in the bathroom - I checked and the bathroom door in our family member's room does not lock. Concerning items getting gone- this happens in all nursing homes. A lot of the time it's residents moving them or losing them or throwing them away because they have dementia. There are some cases of residents " moving " things. I'm sure there might be malicious cases where someone steals, but for us this has not happened. When small things get mixed up or lost, you just understand it's a big place that's very busy and sometimes things happen. We have not found it to be a problem. Most of the things in our loved one's room are just fine. Clothing/laundry mix ups sometimes occur- but it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Just my opinion being around nursing home situations for years - believe me- the good far outweighs the bad!).

We have friends that recently did that, and they are very happy with their choice. Our main consideration is to spare our children the responsibility of caring for us when (not if) we are not able to do it for ourselves. Our real estate agent, Zachary Roberts had toured it already, and he came with us. I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked through the front doors of Harmony at Greensboro. Marian Ragsdale, their Director of Sales and Marketing, met us with a warm welcome. Then what I immediately saw was a bright, cozy gathering room filled with people enjoying one another. All around on the walls I saw beautiful artwork, tastefully incorporated with fine furnishings. It was "swanky." We walked past a dining room where the tables were covered with white tablecloths and set for company. Marian showed us several residential 2-bedroom apartments. They were bright and beautiful. I had seen the floor plans, but they didn't do them justice. Let me just say that if you are considering whether to tour a community, do it for sure. Standing in the middle of each room, I could easily feel myself living there. If that were not enough, the services that they provide - fine dining service, housecleaning, light-bulb changing - anything you are now doing at home they do for you. Lastly, I thought it would feel like hotel living, but I say it's more like living in a neighborhood. I wanted to come home and pack!
