My original plan was lessons at Glencoe's Watts because I love supporting the amazing facilities in our town. But then the Floridian in me started to get a bit nervous about an outdoor rink during those really cold days. No thank you. Since winnetka has an indoor ice arena I turned to them. Unfortunately, their class schedule didnt work around all of my daughters other activities (overscheduled child alert). Instead I spoke to the skating director, Florence, about private lessons for my daughter and a few of her friends. At first Florence seemed hesitant that any of her busy skating instructors would have time for another private lesson, but she promised she'd look into it. A few weeks later I still hadn't heard back so I followed up...and then received an call from a skating coach named Molly who would be thrilled to give us private lessons. I had heard Molly's name floating around other moms at our pre-school so knew we were in good hands. Molly has now given my daughter lessons twice and will continue to every week from here on. From the moment we met her I was a fan and my daughter took to her instantly. She's great with little ones and you can tell she's done this many times before. So far all they've really done is practice falling and skating a little to pick up stuffed animals, but my daughter absolutely loves it (and Molly). 5+ stars for Molly! She's teaching our group of 3, but so far only 2 kids have shown up each time. Personally I think 2 kids is plenty with new skaters ones and wouldn't recommend more than that for privates. Molly charges us $25/kid, but if only one child shows up its $40. You also need to pay for ice time and skate rentals in addition to the lesson. Winnetka ice arena also has open skating hours, but the majority of the times conflict with our school schedule or my other child's naps during the weekend. We will definitely check it out at some point though to practice. Disney on Ice here we come!

This was the first time my 6.5 year old son tried it and he was able to use a skate assistant sled. Unfortunately, the usage time is limited for others to use as well. And if a person didn't return theirs in the 20 minute slot, noone bothered going out to get it. So we patiently waited A few weeks later we go back here for a birthday party. I think we had an hour in the room and another hour on the rink. Not bad, but we felt rushed in the room eating & cake. Then, at the ice rink they had FOUR skate assistant sleds for us to use. Now, it's a party with about 20 kids, most of whom haven't skated before. So 'sharing' the sled was an issue. I asked someone that worked there if we could borrow more (because I know that had more & they weren't being used on the other side), but she said we are only allowed 4. Boo!

I came here to try ice skating for the first time in 25 years. Open skating fees and skate rental…read morefees are comparable to other arenas in the area. But, the perk here is that they don't charge more for non-residents to skate, so if you're bringing non-local friends, they won't have to pay more than you (unlike Evanston and other skating rinks). I do wish that they had some sort of pass card though like Evanston and Wilmette rinks both offer. Their website is a bit dated and confusing, but I sent them a message on Facebook to confirm their public skate hours and they got back to me within minutes, which was nice. They also have skate sharpening, which I definitely need before I try skating again (but haven't used that service yet). The rink itself is nice. It wasn't too crowded when I went during the week a week before Christmas, and the skaters I did meet were friendly. The woman at the desk was helpful as well. I'll definitely come back.

I love this club so much!…read more I don't live in the Chicago area anymore, but have travelled here the last two years for their women's bonspiel, and am blown away by how amazing this club is! The members I've met are so kind and hospitable. They feed us well (during bonspiels), the bar staff is great, and the ice is top notch! My husband played in one of the open bonspiels last year and had a great time as well. As someone who plays on arena ice I am so envious of what a great facility they have. The viewing area accommodates a lot of people, the tables are spaced out enough that it doesn't feel too cramped, there always seems to be napping happening over by the fireplace, and the little museum room has a lot of fun history of curling. Wonderful club, wonderful people, wonderful ice! I love this club!!

Okay, let's talk seriously. Curling is a sport that most people watch every 4 years, during the…read moreOlympics. And this last time (2018), was a banner year, with the US Men's Team winning gold for the first time ever. Woo hoo! But curling has been a great sport for a long, long time. And the Chicago Curling Club has been a big part of that here in the mid-west for like 150 years or so. Let's talk about why. Well, first, the CCC is a great group of folks. The mid-west is renowned for being friendly and polite, right? Well, the folks at the CCC are that times 2. Super friendly and ready, willing and able to not only teach you about the sport of curling, but just as happy to talk about whatever else is on your mind, all while buying you a beer. Seriously, I have yet to find a nicer bunch of folks anywhere in the country. Then, there is curling itself. Yeah, there are some competitive folks (hell, you can;t go to the olympics, much less win, without being competitive, right?). But there are a TON of leagues at the club that are purely for fun. Rookies, pick-up and other leagues that even the newest of newbies can join and have fun at. Add to all of that the social aspect. Multiple FREE events throughout the year, just for socializing and community. This is the kind of place that literally anyone can feel at home. Finally there is the sport of curling itself. Look, I like to veg out as much as the next guy. But this is damn near the only sport I could play, for fun or competitively, where I can literally have a beer while I play. Bad knees? No problem. Need hyper cardio? Got ya covered. Just want to play for fun and socialize? Check. Want to belong to a group that has fun and contributes to the community? You could do way worse! The CCC is a great group of folks, with a great facility, and perpetuating a great sport, all while contributing to the community at large. Swing by, have a beer, and learn to curl. I guarantee you'll have a great time, and you just might change your life.
