I used to ride a Citi Bike over, but they also have ample parking, and being right off the West Side Highway made it accessible even for people coming from less convenient parts of the city. It is by no means cheap, but the facility is well-maintained, with two sheets of ice and a serious adult hockey setup. The west rink is especially nice if you get a daytime slot, with views of the Hudson River. I played here for 7 years during my 13 years living in New York, across both Division 1 and Division 4. I always had fun and met a lot of solid people through the leagues. At the time, the rink was run by Dan Genovese, who was super cool, a great hockey player, and someone who ran the leagues and facilities fairly. Adult hockey can get chaotic quickly, and Chelsea Piers generally felt organized, competitive, and well-managed. For a few years, I also stored my equipment in a locker in the Canadiens' locker room, which made skating there much more convenient. Chelsea Piers has plenty beyond hockey, including a driving range and other athletic offerings, but I was really a customer of the ice rink. From that perspective, it is one of the better sports facilities in Manhattan: expensive, yes (like everything in NYC), but clean, organized, well-located, and a great place to keep playing competitive adult hockey in the city.

The shopman here was kind and concise. He told me to come back the same time the next day to get the finished product. After picking them up, my skates were unfortunately smudged and scratched. Personally, I wasn't that disappointed about it, but I can see how others would be. If you care about aesthetics of your final product, I'd recommmend looking at other options before coming here.

Behind the counter stood the shopkeep, a bright eyed practitioner of the craft whose eyes held flips and grinds in his eyes and the guy (perhaps one of the co-owners) eyes should the hard-won wisdom of a thousand ollies and an endless spiral shove its and trey flips. With an unhurried grace, he guided me through the vast selection of decks, each one a potential vessel for my dreams of the tricks I had in mind in NY. I only skate 8.38, a pristine slab of Canadian maple whose concave curves beckoned me like the shores of some undiscovered nation. As I ran my fingers along its lengths, I could feel the potential energy thrumming beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed upon the unforgiving embrace of New York's legendary terrain. The transaction complete, the guy behind the counter did not simply send me on my way with a perfunctory "thank you." No, in his magnanimous spirit, he offered to initiate me into the sacred welcome of the shop's team, to let me drink deeply from the fountain of skating knowledge that flowed through their ranks. It was a humbling invitation, one that filled me with a sense of belonging to something greater than myself. So this shop wasn't exactly on the agenda but it happened to be next to the pizza shop we stopped…read morein for lunch and as soon as my kiddo saw the box out front with a "5 cards for $1" sign I knew we were making a pitstop. I don't often visit trading card or comic book stores so idk what I was expecting as we walked in but I've got to tell y'all -- five-star experience from the moment we stepped in. Must start off by giving props to the guys behind the counter -- we interacted with two of them and both were so incredibly friendly and personable; when my son asked about Pokémon cards they guided him to the shelf full of packs and then popped over a few minutes later with a goodie bag to take home full of stickers. After several minutes of deliberating my kiddo picked a pack to purchase.. up at the counter they totaled up our purchase and ended up tossing in those 10 cards we grabbed from the box outside for free. They also grabbed a stack from behind the counter (that was likely destined for the box out front) and told him to pick whatever he wanted from there. I know those cards in the box out front don't have much value (being 5 for a $1 and all) so it probably wasn't a big deal to these guys running the shop to give away a few dollars worth but it means a lot to this mom. Super thankful for these guys and their engagement...my lil guy went home super happy w/ a whole bunch of new cards for his binder. Other fun things to share about this shop: - Besides Pokémon they also had plenty of cards to check out: sports cards, magic the gathering, kpop demon hunters, marvel collector cards, etc. There are new packs and vintage cards. - There's a bunch of tables set up in the store.. so that's kindof perfect while you're waiting for your kid(s) to pick out a pack of cards. Or, I supposed, if you and a group of friends are looking to shop and trade cards. - They've got promotions happening nearly everyday! We visited on a Monday and received 5% off our total. - And they've got deals for new customers -- sign up for emails and get $10 in credit for their next purchase.
