I got a few cuts and scrapes in the mud, so maybe bring some hand sanitizer in your pocket. You get a medal at the end for completing it, and they have some food trucks to feast after the race. My one complain is that they charge you $20 to park at a public park that is free to park.

Fun fact, a condo in Bay Harbor Islands was used for the exterior of Dexter Morgan's apartment in the Showtime's TV show Dexter. Officer Scott A. Winters Park is on East Island. This park was named in honor of K-9 Officer Scott A. Winters who attended Bay Harbor Elementary and served as a police officer here in his early career. While he was a Pompano Beach Police Officer he was murdered on July 29, 1990 by a man he was trying to apprehend who was suspected of raping and assaulting a woman. The man who shot Officer Winters is on death row. Winters is the only Pompano Beach Officer to lose his life in the line of duty. After this incident, the Pompano Beach Police Department disbanded when they merged with the Broward Sheriff's Office. There is also a park named in Officer Scott A. Winter's honor in Pompano Beach. Amenities at this park include a restroom, benches, a dog run, pavilion, two shaded play structures equipped with ADA-accessible components. and splash pad. There are two so the kids aren't piled on top of each other. Swings for kids and swings for babies are separate. Rock climbing wall is small and short enough for the kids not to get hurt if they do have a little tumble. Sensory or rotary toys Turf ground is amazing. We don't get dirty sitting on the ground or running around. Seesaw. I can't remember the last time I've seen one of those. So cool. Dinosaur teeter. One or two kids can ride on it. Mini library to borrow and donate books for the kids. Plenary of benches all around. So convenient because I was not looking forward to being all hinged over on the floor. Next to a bright line rail track. Scary but it's on the other side of the fence of course. No danger here. Parking right outside and free. You don't have one of those park and pay situations. Park is gated. Kidd can safely run around and you can relax as they play. Tip: bring chalk the pavilion Pilars are coated in chalkboard paint so you can draw all over. A little bucket and washcloths might be a good idea too to clean up the walls a bit and start your masterpiece.

I have passed this park many times while visiting the Miami Airport Convention Center and was…read morecurious about what kind of park this was in the middle of the city. After a recent event at the convention center I stopped by to check it out. It turns out it is a hidden gem with a surprise you don't often find in the city. This park in Miami is named in honor of Robert King High (April 9, 1924 - August 30, 1967). King was an attorney and politician. He was born in Tennessee and moved to Florida after serving in WWII where he became an active in the democratic party. He was mayor of Miami for 10 years before running for governor in 1966 but he was defeated by Republican Claude Kirk. Robert King High he died of a heart attack less than a year after losing the election. Robert King High Park is located next to Lake Maha and dates to the 1970's but It was extensively remodeled in 2011 when a building was added for classes. The park is divided into two sections, a 1.5 acre day use recreational area in the south front of the park that includes six basketball courts, softball/ baseball field, a sand volleyball court, and a playground. The back north end of the park contains the surprise, the 5.24 acre Carlos Arboleya campground. Arboleya was born in Cuba. He was the former president of Barnett Bank and a presence in South Florida's Cuban-American business community. He volunteered for 60 years with the youth of Miami and was the former president of the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1978 in honor of his long and dedicated service to the youth of Miami and the Boy Scouts, the campground in the park was named in his honor. Arboleya waged a one man campaign to keep the area that is now the campground from being turned into a velodrome. The velodrome was built elsewhere in the city and this area was preserved so that the scouts of Miami could experience camping in a city that had very little places for this activity. In this area of the park is a lake for fishing, a pool. and hiking trails. Discovering the campground was my favorite part of this park because it is such an amazing resource for the Miami community. Kids who live in the city and who might not be able to experience the joy of camping out have the perfect place to experience sleeping outdoors thanks to the foresight of Carlos Arboleya. Even though he has since passed away he is still positively impacting the youth of Miami.

Recently came here for a kid's birthday party. The play area is all carpeted and looks at least…read moretwenty years old. Smells like it too. The other area was a small space they had somehow crammed a pool table, bar, domino table and several other tall tables into. All the tall tables had been taken so I sat with my daughter at the kids table situated in the center of the room. I was immediately told to get up because the chairs were made for kids. Not for nothing but I weigh a whopping 105 pounds. But whatever. I took my daughter into the play area and she wanted me to carry her so she could dunk a basket on the basketball game in the corner. I lost my balance and fell into it. Immediately, here comes crabby owner yelling "Get up, get up! You're gonna break it!" Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. I went into the other area for a while to eat and grab some candy and could hear this lady yelling at kids about climbing on stuff and running too fast. Seriously? At this point there was only about 40 minutes left of party time. My daughter wants to go into the bounce house. She got scared when the kids got rough and just sat there crying. Naturally, I went in after her. Guess who is on my ass two seconds later. I pull my kid out, grab our things and tell the lady to go screw herself and that she'll never see me or anyone I know ever again. My best friend who threw the party told her off also. Moral of the story, if you want your kids to have fun, stay far away from this place.

The park offers adult program and supervised youth sports programs and the city often holds food truck events here. My favorite part of the park is the area in the back. Highland Oaks Park has one of the last remaining freshwater wetlands located at the headwaters of the Oleta River which is the only natural river remaining in the Miami-Dade County. The Oleta River had been designated designated a "Florida Outstanding Waterway." This area has the low salinity environment necessary for commercial and recreational fishing species like snook, mullet and tarpon to reproduce. This is the only freshwater tributary connection to the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve that does not have a flood control structure. This area is an important habitat to aquatic wildlife and native plants. Around the lake is an exercise path with fitness stations. I was surprised to see a large alligator swimming in the lake. I had a little talk with the ducks and warned them to stay away. Hopefully they took it to heart. The back area of this park is a really beautiful place to see all kinds of native wildlife. I thoroughly enjoyed my walk here today.

One of the highlights of the park is the nature inspired 10,800 square foot playground. The new playground was designed by LandscapeDE who was hired by Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces with the goal of creating a space that would encourage residents and their children to spend more time outside, be active, and de-stress. LandscapeDE creates very distinctive and creative outdoor play spaces for children. If you ever saw one you would know it instantly. They also created the amazing ADA accessible playground in Pinecrest Gardens with the anole lizard ramp and play structure and a brand new playground for Pioneer Park in Port St. Lucie. For Biscayne Shores & Gardens Park they built on a five foot earth mound and added an explorer dome, boulder climbers, an embankment slide, swings, bee and forest bug spring riders, a forest lake boat, and an embankment slide. Royal palms, gumbo limbo trees, live oaks, milkweeds, Fakahatchee grass, pineland crotons, yellowtops, porterweeds, gamagrass, giant ironweeds, and Boston ferns were planted to accent the area. The large trees give the playground the feel of being in a forest as they provide shade and connect the playground to nature. The playground was one of the first in Miami Dade County to incorporate nature based play elements. Biscayne Shore and Gardens Park also has a new 3,013 square foot recreation center that offers arts and crafts, after school programs, and camps. The recreations center includes a park office, restrooms, and storage space, a 20-vehicle lighted parking lot, walkway lighting, sidewalks, and landscaping. Additional amenities include picnic shelters, benches, and an exercise path that winds among the park's landscaping enhancing its natural beauty, with palm trees and colorful flowers adding to the vibrant and inviting environment. Biscayne Shores and Gardens Park is a charming and versatile space that caters to a wide range of interests and activities. This is a great working-class park, however, it's easily distressed by these annoying, useless government agents. Again, as soon as sunset hits, expect your local uniformed-thugs to send you packing home, because, yup, you guessed, it's "too dark" and those are the "rules".
