Ordering from the tablet on the table is convenient, food was served relatively quick too. I've been here when it was located along Telegraph avenue and usually order the Garlic Beef Pepper Rice which is an original that you can't go wrong with, love that one, but I make sure to eat it with the sauces on the side now because it tastes better that way personally. I got the curry beef udon for the first time at this location and it was okay, I was expecting a very robust Curry flavor (like the curry sauce you cook at home LOL) but it was just some curry powder sprinkled on top. I guess that's how it is for a sizzling plate though, still tastes good, but was a more subtle flavoring for sure. read more

I will admit - the sensory experiences here make up a good portion of its value. The sizzling sounds and smells really do accentuate taste. I ordered the Pork Belly Pepper Rice + egg - prices are a bit high for what you get, especially because this feels like a meal you can easily make at home, but it's a quick and solid meal. Like others have said, you order on an ipad, and there's plenty of seating inside. I personally found my order a bit bland on its own, so I added a good amount of sauce - the sauces were very solid though (I think I used the most miso sauce, but all of them were yumm). This Sizzling Lunch is located in downtown Berkeley. Parking is a bit hit or miss here, since it street parking, but there is usually some parking around the corner or if you park a couple of blocks away along the street by the school. Service from the one employee manning the register / tables good, as he was accommodating and friendly, which is why the 2 stars, instead of the 1 star. This is the 2nd time I had been to this location. Everything was fine at first, as I ordered ahead on the phone and was given about a 10 minutes estimate. The order was not ready when I arrived, but the employee was apologetic about it. I asked if I could add an additional protein, but it was not possible as they already made it - I did asked for the egg not to be scrambled, which they delivered. After receiving my food, I took it to my car for a taste test and the udon was super greasy / oily tasting, while the beef tasted a bit burnt. I debated on bringing it back, which I did because I could not even eat the udon at all after that 1 bite of it. The employee was accommodating and apologetic, he asked if I would like to change to something else and he even offer to add that additional protein. I ended up choosing rice instead of the udon with the 2 proteins. He let the chef in the kitchen know and was yelled at by that said chef about the cost difference and whatnot, and it was pretty loud that it was a bit awkward and unprofessional. The employee again apologized multiple times and I told him I have no problem paying for the extra protein and with that the chef obliged to make it. After receiving my food, I took it back to my car and decided to try it - I do not know if the chef was being petty or what, but he burnt the bottom of my egg and sort of covered it, so it was not noticeable, until I flipped it over. Instead of complaining again, I just took the L and left, so it was such a waste of money and time. read more

I used to go to the Sizzling Lunch on Telegraph and found out they moved closer to Shattuck, which is nice. Parking is quite difficult, but I love how their new location is more spacious. Parking is tricky, but not the fault of the restaurant. It is in downtown Berkeley, so if you expect anything different perhaps one should reconsider their expectations. The food was great. We had 3 different dishes, and they were all good so no reason to state what they were as I my assumption is that as a whole the food is good as they menu is pretty consistent. The service was solid. I would not expect anything different as it is not a "sit down" restaurant with all the frills. I love Pepper Lunch, so I was thrilled to find a similar type of restaurant in my backward in Berkeley. Sizzling Lunch is the same concept in that you get your meal which consists of a carb (usually a heaping scoop of cooked rice but they have some options with udon) and raw protein (ranging from beef to salmon) on a sizzling hot plate. You cook the protein to your liking yourself. There are three different sauces including shoyu, teriyaki, and spicy miso which are all super yummy. The entrees are in the $17-20 range. You order on a tablet and pay at the counter, but we had a friendly server who came by to explain the restaurant concept and bring out our order. I got the curry beef which was tasty but the meat to rice ratio was a tad disappointing. I can't quite put my finger on it but I prefer Pepper Lunch over Sizzling Lunch. Parking can be tough and is limited to street parking. read more

It's expensive to me but it's so good! I love the garlic fried with egg. Easy to eat! The service is really good for the most part, but I did have one encounter where the card reader was down and it was a bit awkward dealing with the cashier who struggled to do basic math. My guess is that he was nervous and wasn't able to think so quickly. Fortunately, I did not try to get over, I had cash and went on my way. In the future, I recommend that they have a calculator available if they are unable to calculate the difference in their head. No judgment, but it'd save them from a visible freak out. I should also add that there is another gentleman (maybe Caucasian, sorry if I am incorrect as I already hate to use race/ethnicity as a descriptor) who is always on point with his customer service skills. I always know I'm going to have a pleasant, no frills interaction and service. The ordering technique is somewhat weird though so be prepared for some confusion as a first timer. It's like you have a bit of autonomy to self complete the virtual ordering form but rather than just completing the payment by yourself, someone will assist you with payment. I would like to review this restaurant but I can't. We walked in around 1 pm on a Friday. Since the restaurant was nearly empty, we thought it would be a quick lunch. Boy, we were so wrong. It wasn't quick. And there wasn't lunch. We ordered food on the iPad, pretty straight forward. After we waited, and waited, and waited... nothing happened. We got our water immediately so we knew the order was in but the food never came. We finally gave up after 30 minutes. We told the server, he understood why we're leaving but did not offer explanation, apology, nothing. This had to be the worst restaurant in Berkeley. Be aware! read more

saw their mother's day promo (mom gets any plate free, only one per party) & came in right as they opened! it was practically empty, and their new location is much better - bigger & nicely decorated. we were a party of 7 - after ordering, it took around 25-30 mins for all appetizers and entrees to arrive. we had an order mishap (user error) though it was no problem. i'm sure the wait time is due to the place filling up very quickly and there only being 2 attendants, but it was obvious they were working on accommodating everyone! all the appetizers were great as usual and everyone cleaned their plates. read more

I was *very* excited to eat at this spot - my SF gf had come down to LA and we had tried a competitor to this establishment, and it's one of my personal faves. So when she said she found something similar up north, and that we could try it on my next visit up, I was super stoked. Now, the good - there was only a table or two seated when we got in, so no wait. We found street parking nearby. The food was brought out fairly quickly. Ordering via the tablets at the table was pretty straight forward. Service was extremely friendly. Now, the food - it was definitely a miss for me. Comparing it to the establishment I'm used to, the garlic/butter flavor was just super lacking. If I was local I'd give it another go for sure, but as a one-off visit, I don't think I'd make an effort to go back. I love how quick and efficient everything is and the food is consistent across all Sizzling Lunch locations! The dining experience is very focused on 'do it yourself' where you'll order on the tablets at the tables, mix the plates yourself, and checkout as well. Besides their sizzling rice plates that are pretty consistent, I tried two of their appetizers (karaage and gyoza) but I wasn't a huge fan.
