The owner Dermot is absolutely delightful. Fifth generation owner. We ended up going back that night for the local music. It is a very special little place. It is a pub, a restaurant and they have accommodations along with a very well done and very interesting museum upstairs. This is a true hidden gem. Thank you, Dermot for your hospitality. It was a pleasure chatting with you.

We thought we were simply coming for lunch, but it was so much more than that!! Dermot, the fifth-generation owner, gave an interesting presentation on the building's history and shared some great stories about the original owners while we sat in the beer garden. Then we were taken to the museum/visitors center where we learned about the town's history with Gorta, Swatragh's Famine Story. We entered an interactive room that told the story of Dr. Mooney and his wife, Sarah, who operated a surgery and dispensary at this location. They had also set up a soup kitchen during the potato famine. In 1992, the Friel family found an original famine soup pot from Dr. Mooney's time. They also discovered a window when renovating during COVID. It was thought that people would come to the window to get their soup. We toured the rest of the museum, which was very interesting. Then we went to the restaurant for lunch. I loved the interior and the whole vibe. The exterior is also beautiful with plants and flowers. Since we were such a large group, we were given two choices for lunch, chicken or beef. Plus, we got one free alcoholic drink. I chose a nice cold beer. I had the grass-fed beef, mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, broccoli, and carrots. The beef was so tender, you didn't need a knife. The meal came out piping hot! Even the carrots were delicious, and I'm not a big fan of carrots. The service was great, considering they were serving so many people at once. It was honestly the best meal I'd had during our entire cruise vacation.

A real hidden gem in Limavady of all places…read more Granny Annies is decorated like a fancy old lady's house (in a good way), with recipes on the wall, an entire living room upside down in the bathroom and loads of cool details elsewhere. It's so good it's bit like an American theme restaurant. There's also a nice little outside area to sit in the summer, with a tractor and a colourful play park for kids. The good is great, but the service could be a little better.

And the term 'good deal'…read moreis fairly key to this. 3 of us went in on a work lunch while nearby and after looking at the menu decided to give it a shot. The menu while certainly not extensive managed to hit a few promising notes and the orders were placed. The place was pretty empty given its size and the chefs, visible in the open plan kitchen were really just standing around cleaning surfaces they'd just cleaned a few minutes ago. The first impression was that although the décor in the place was perhaps trying a little too hard the staff were nice and the menu OK even if at slightly high prices for the selection. Not extortionate by any means given the selection. The food arrived in a prompt enough time given that the place was empty so that was good. But this is where the shine came off for me. I ordered a toasted BLT and a side of chips for an extra £2. The sandwich itself was OK, not very generously filled but most of all it was just very small. It was cut into 4 triangles and put onto 2 sticks to hold it together on the plate. I think a degree of 'smooshing' had happened when they tried to put it all together and it wasn't that big to start with so it looked pretty sorry on the plate. The chips on the side were very good in terms of quality, nice and crispy and fluffy. But again, style took over substance and in delivering them in the now ubiquitous white enamel mug, the portion was quite small. For this and a small glass of Coke I paid £7.95. For popping in for lunch and given the slightly underwhelming food and far too small portions, I just wasn't impressed. I had expected more from the promises made by the look of the place from outside.

I hate it when restaurants do this, I can understand it for Christmas party bookings, but dislike when deposits are requested throughout the year. It would prevent me from returning with a large party in future. It's just a hassle trying to collect money from people you won't necessarily be seeing before an evening out. Alternatively one person has to cover the deposit before the meal, which is unfair and leaves them out of pocket until the night out. Other than this we had a good overall experience. Waiting staff were excellent and the menu is huge with a vast selection of dishes, even plenty of veggie options - burgers, pizzas, pastas etc. I ordered vegetarian fajitas which were served with a side of fries, 3 fajita pancakes, a large sizzling plate of mixed veg (mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes) plus guacamole, sour cream and salsa. The guacamole and salsa weren't fresh, instead they seemed quite processed. But it was good food - not great - but filling, tasty and reasonable for the price. Our whole party enjoyed their meals. We also ordered dessert and the Banoffee Pie was absolutely gorgeous- though I did have dessert envy when I saw the Nutella Dough Balls some of the others ordered! Ginger, gin, beer and plenty of wine flowed. In total two courses, drinks and tips cost approximately £35 per person. A good night was had by all. This is a nice, casual, relaxed restaurant and I would return - but not with a large party as I dislike the insistence on a deposit and enforced service charge. Whilst I recognise the reasoning for these charges and appreciate they are becoming common in a lot of restaurants, I will primarily take my custom to establishments who don't insist on a deposit. A good, solid 3.5 stars from me...

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.

Since my first visit, I have been to Josh Mac's about 5 times so far, and they have been consistently fantastic. Josh Mac's offer a grill, American/fusion type menu, with loads of delicious dishes on offer to suit anyone's taste, such as burgers, pasta, chicken dishes, fish dishes, and a Veggie menu too. Each time I have been I've got something different and it's been just amazing. It's hard to choose, but I'd say my favourite so far was the Piri piri chicken quesadilla. Most of their mains come with two sides, and unusually for me, I struggled to finish this, but it was worth every bite! The braised Cajun rice and coleslaw were the perfect accompaniments. It's a very pleasant experience to sit in Josh Mac's, with great decor and really spacious and airy inside, with massive windows which are great for watching the world go by. I've always been seated quickly any time I have been there and the staff are friendly and efficient. The restaurant (and importantly the bathrooms!) are spotlessly clean. Definitely a must visit!
