Side view of Sing's.
Karene A.

When I saw the sign on the side of Sing's building, I expected something smaller and humbler. Not that I'm a graphic design elitist, but the layout and colouring reminded me of more of a small-time take-away restaurant where you only sit out the front to wait for your order and get the hell out of there. (See photo: I'm a little wary about restaurant signs with bullet points explaining what's on the menu, in this case Chinese, Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese.) I didn't have a clear view of Sing at first, having come via the car park. Anyone who lives in, around or frequents Rosalie knows that parking can be tough. Street park spaces are a joke on busy nights, and the Rosalie Mews car park nearby is manned by Parking Nazis ("ROSALIE MEWS CUSTOMERS ONLY / OFFENDERS TOWED / 15 MIN PARKING ONLY"). Rosalie Mews car park apparently does not accommodate Sing's patrons, though I'm assuming some sneaky customers get past the Nazis and park here anyway. There is also a nearby Rosalie Village car park without the Nazis, but the car park seems to be full no matter what time of day. I visited Sing's on a Saturday in the early afternoon. Rosalie was pretty pumping even at this time. The nearby Grill'd was literally packed while Sing's was about 1/4 full. I suppose others have been unlucky on previous occasions in terms of there not being enough wait staff, but when I visited they were bustling about like no one's business. Having said that, I didn't eat here - coffee and water for me - and I admit my initial water request was forgotten. Not that it makes it okay, but I'd say the hit rate for receiving water (when requested) in Brisbane restaurants is around 50%. My companions ordered food, and being meat-loving males they ordered the Mongolian Beef and Satay Chicken. I refused a taste of the latter (having just had satay chicken at home - that's forward planning!) but tried the Mongolian Beef. It was good, but I don't think it's a dish one can easily screw up. The crowd here (about 15 or so people) were mostly hip, in their early 20s and male. I was the only female patron at the restaurant at the time. I imagine the numbers are much more evenly split on the busier Friday and Saturday nights. I'll certainly be coming back on one of these nights to have more of a dressed-up, going-out experience at Sing's.

But I'll have you know that this is the one I choose to go to over all the other ones, and that makes it super special. I go there for the playground. It's not only a McDonald's play area, it's under shade. Now for all you mums out there looking for a place to dump your 2-5 year old kiddies, this is the place. I know it doesn't sound like that big a deal, but it is! Do you know how many mums out there wish there was a place like McDonalds with a play area under shade? While they can talk, eat, be merry. There are millions. And that, my friend, is why this McDonalds is super special. You can lock those smelly little suckers up and they can't go anywhere while you have a chat with your friend, lover, some stranger... it's fantastic. You can finally grab those really precious few minutes if not more (there is rubber matting, it will reduce the time the child falls to when you actually have to get up and see to that they are okay because the rubber matting, sponges their fall mmm hmmm you see?)... and for free. FREE. Cheap food, no entry fee and free enclosed play area... these words are like music to a tired, restless, about to lose it mothers' ears. It sounds very hard to believe I know... shouldn't all play areas for McDonalds be under cover? The answer is NO people.... the answer is no. This one even has a McCafe and is now a 24 hour establishment... even better! I have driven around Centenary looking, the Hungry Jacks has a playground so under the sun the paint has started stripping and the metal has started looking very grimy. The KFC doesn't have one, the other ones are in a shopping centre... just trust me on this one. Take a breather, I never thought I'd say this, but go check this quinkydink out.

The thought of fish and chips often conjure images of TGIF/Applebees/etc or frozen entrees for me…read more A Salt & Battery showed me what real fish and chips suppose to be like. Wishing for the whole deal, I opted for the fried food platter which consisted of fried fish, fried calamari rings, fried scallop, fried shrimp, and french fries. First of all, this isn't beer battered, it was breaded. Secondly, this is a lot of food for one person... The chips were pretty standard fare, crispy and lightly seasoned. Fish was fresh, doesn't have the frozen taste that I'm all too (unfortunately) accustomed to. The calamari rings came with 2 variety, one was the standard breading and the other had an unique seasoning to it that I couldn't place. Anyway all this fried food was completely offset the truly authentic greek salad of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, olives, feta cheese all topped with olive oil. Order and pay at the counter, take the number, sit down, wait 15 minutes for food. The staff were friendly and helpful, but were quite busy with busing the tables, taking orders, and bringing the food out. They only have outdoor seating. On nights with a slight breeze like the night I came, it was a great experience. However I can't imagine coming here during the summers when it regularly hits the low 30C. I just need that AC.

Affectionately known as Salt 'n' Bat, this Fish and Chip shop is frequented by ravenous uni students and St Lucia locals. It is a BYO venue which means you will often find a table of 20 or so college kids escaping bad dining hall food while charging up for a night out at the RE. While Salt 'n' Bat is clearly a uni kid hang out, its tasty menu (especially the awesome battered chips and Salt and Pepper Squid) attracts a more diverse crowd. Anyone aching for some good fish and chips will find this restaurant to their liking. They also have an impressive range of Boylan vintage sodas, my favourite of which is the traditional tasting root beer. Salt 'n' Bat is dine in or take away. If you are dining in, however, don't expect anything fancy as you will be seated in red or blue plastic chairs with a white plastic table. Nonetheless, the good food (and hopefully good company you keep) is enough to make Salt 'n' Bat a fine place to eat.

Burger: Arrived covered in pepper that I never asked for and never ordered. This is not a mistake, this is someone in the kitchen deliberately adding an ingredient to food I was going to eat without my knowledge or consent. That is food tampering, plain and simple. Drink: Arrived half empty and had spilled inside the bag, soaking everything else in the order. The packaging was a complete mess by the time it reached me. McFlurry: Fully melted, liquid by the time it arrived. And somehow, the dipping sauce for the nuggets had ended up inside the McFlurry cup. How does that even happen? At what point during packing did someone think that was acceptable? Every single item in this order was either wrong, damaged, or ruined. I had a burger with beetroot, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, a homestyle beef patty and barbeque sauce... let's just say, it came out pretty damn big. So big most of the ingredients fell out the bottom onto the paper bag it came in after my first and second bite (don't you hate that). I'm definetely a regular here. The regulars know to stand aside once they place their orders too…read moreso they can take the next person's order on a busy day in the food court. (TIP) What I recommend, my personal favourites are: The Miso Chicken, Ramen and the Hanaichi Chicken dishes, all served with rice and the Hanaichi one has a really yummy mayonnaise like picked sauce served with a salad and chicken on the rice. Weird sounding I know, but trust me, it tastes pretty good once it hits you in the mouth. Tangy... yet flavoursome. One of the cheapest japanese hot dish places you will ever go to with high quality food and quick service. You won't pay more than $10 for a dish here and the turnaround time (unless you order the katsudom and ramen) is under a minute usually. You can order extra rice, but they charge for it, but they won't give you extra topping even if you pay as I found out. So you can ask for the chicken curry, without the curry, so it's just chicken and rice, but you'll pay the same. Worth a try, great tasting authentic food for those on a budget, or not on a budget.

Chicken Katsu Curry of course! The only wish I had for Hanaichi, is that they have their own small dining space where you don't have to share with the rest of the food court.
