Spending one night in Waterloo as we were traveling across the country and we stopped in for an early dinner. Being one of the first restaurants we have eaten at since COVID, we were not sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. Everyone had a face mask that was working there. Hand sanitizer was available. Menus were available via your phone or throw away paper ones if you wanted. We felt very comfortable eating on the patio where tables were spaced apart. In from Milwaukee (brew city) for my class reunion and was blown away! Waterloo is blessed to have such a treasure... Beers were excellent and varied. A wide variety that pleased the hop-heads and sour freaks I was with. Food was excellent, we ordered several appetizers and our server Madi was amazing. She was very helpful working with our large fussy group, making everything perfect. She even worked with the kitchen to modify some of our dishes to be vegan friendly. The twice fried french fries were super! Atmosphere can't be beat. We sat in outside beer garden and it's impressive. The whole facility is just on point. Love the cream city brick on the old Wonder Bread Bakery. I can't really recommend any other place in Waterloo above our experience! This place is equally magnificent as a brewery as it is an entertainment plaza. Honestly, they have something for everyone, even a separate section for kids. And the place is HUGE! Corn hole, TV's, patio, video games, you name it. So fun to hang out here. The beers are just ok, but you'll definitely find something on the draft list that you like. The food is amazing! Really pleasant place to watch the game and have a bite to eat. I was visiting from out of town and was happy to find a hidden gem with good food and good, unique local beer. Staff was nice and responsive without hovering or rushing. Plenty of TVs. Lots of space without feeling far away from things. Nice patio area though I sat at the bar inside. Free parking in their lot, which was a little tricky to find with the construction nearby. I would have gladly returned but the early week closures meant it wasn't to be. A group (40 people or so) had a social in the "party room"....mostly guys. The accoustics in that room were horrible! Everyone had to talk loud raising the noise level TO HIGH! Couldn't even hear someone talking and standing right by you. Not really many sitting at tables.....didn't really order food..... A waitress or two trying to run around and take drink orders.....but guests were moving around some in the room so that was a little tricky. We thought about renting the "party room" for a 50 year anniversary gathering a couple of years ago. We definitely made the right decision not renting it for that occasion! read more

If you want to take your kids, please rethink. While they do have some games for them to play while you wait for the food, my kids absolutely did not like their food and they are not picky eaters. The fries were super salty, the chicken strips, were spicy and salty and there are no alternatives to fries for a side. Hubby tried the chicken and waffles and the chicken was way too spicy he barely had three bites of it. Now for the service. After not know which door to go in the hostess did not welcome us at all. Very bland and almost condescending. Our server was even worse. Didn't look happy to be there and didn't say anything to welcome us or explain anything on the menu even after we said we had never been here. Not helpful, and just plain not pleasant. I also really liked the buffalo cauliflower tacos, and it's refreshing to have an "interesting" vegetarian option over the standard veggie burger or salad. Atmosphere is great for all types, as they offer traditional dining, communal seating, and an outdoor patio. Service was excellent and all staff were very friendly. I would give this place 5 stars, except I kept having to shoo a couple flies away indoors. It's summer in Iowa, I can't really fault them for that but it's a little unappetizing. Let's face it, Northern Iowa is about two things, corn and breweries. This brewery should be on your top 5 list of places to try. Not only do they have multiple beers that you've probably never tasted, but their food is also amazing! I have had three of their flatbreads, which essentially a personal pizza. And also the chicken and waffles is very good. But for me, the salad shined brighter than most. There's also a very comfortable, laid back vibe that makes you feel like everyone in the room are friends. The big tables sometimes allow you to sit next to strangers ( don't worry, they have plenty of private tables ), that you normally would never meet! read more

I visited last weekend after a UNI graduation ceremony and was impressed. I LOVE the use and adaptation of this old Sunbeam/Hostess bakery. The building is cool, inside and outside--and it appears that an adjacent beer garden will be opened later this year. I am not a beer lover but tried the Cow Tipper and would return just for that. Really interesting and delicious, with coffee and chocolate in the background. I am contemplating a Cow Tipper float with vanilla ice cream. Stick with me here. . . . The food was inventive and tasty. We tried the shrimp tacos, beef sliders, a burger, and--my favorite--an asparagus-goat cheese-radish flatbread that screamed spring. Had the spicy pork carnita tacos. Although the pork was moist and delicious, it wasn't spicy. The fries were amazing. I read the reviews and saw the pics so had to try! They were served hot and fresh. Great beverage selection and knowledgeable bartenders. My only recommendation would be to serve the tacos on a larger plate so one doesn't have to stop on the table. I've waited a long time to review the food for this place. Really in hopes it would get better. The menu sounds cool but the food always lacks taste it seems. This last visit the wings were rubbery. My wife ended up getting sick. The buns for the burgers are alway dry and to thick. Just about anything else again lacks flavor or just plain sucks. I do like their fancy pants fries, very unique and lots of character. Their pretzels are not too bad. The atmosphere is awesome which is why we kept trying to go back. Until there is a chef or kitchen change I'll stick to a beer and maybe side of fries. But even the beer list hasn't improved much. I guess I compare it to their young days in Cedar Falls it seemed like they were always putting new things out there. read more

The beer is amazing and trying all the flavors with the flights is a really fun experience. The server was nice, helpful, and very informative, and the food was really good: my mom was shocked by the greatness of the gourmet hamburger she ordered and she was raving about it for the whole ride home! The house made ketchup was also exceptionally good - sweet like ketchup but also mildly herbaceous. The only thing missing was a BBQ or some other type of sauce for the pork slider as it felt as if it was lacking that element. All in all, a unique and wonderful addition to the downtown Waterloo area and I'm excited to bring others to see this great new place. read more

Stopped in on our way back to Illinois. The hostess was very nice and gave my wife & I a short history on Single Speed Brewery. We sat at the outside bar which is in a good wide open area with lots of tables and counters. We started with a 4 beer flight. I chose the Tricycle(Cream Ale) and River to River (Pils). My wife chose the Tip the Cow (Cocoa Espresso Milk Stout) and the Ocelot (Coffee Infused Milkshake IPA). Out of the two, I liked the Pils better. I had a pint of Gable (Munich Helles) which I liked very much! My wife & I went inside to have lunch and the waiter was very nice. I ordered the Chicky-Chicky-Parm-Parm flatbread and it was incredible! Chucks of chicken and melted mozzarella. I would have ate it all, but I had to give my wife a taste. My wife ordered from the brunch menu and had the Monkey See, Monkey Nu...Tells. My wife said that it was very delicious! Beautiful place with lots of space and tables. Bought some brewery T-shirts on our way out the door. We will be back on our next trip to Iowa! read more

I think the hype about this place contributed to my disappointment. I liked how they gave samples of the different beer. I ordered a strawberry beer and it was good. The food was just ok. Nothing memorable and not worth the price. The ambiance is "different". Very open and loud. There are some booths but mostly community picnic style tables. The decor is really cool as it used to be the Wonder Bread Factory. We went, we saw, we ate but probably won't go again. read more

This place is AWESOME! The brewery design and incorporation of the old Hostess factory was done perfectly! We stopped in on Saturday night of Memorial Day Weekend and it was packed!
