The food was fine but both times I went, for lunch and for dinner, the service was EXTREMELY slow and the waiters did not know who they were serving to. This is a problem when dining with a large group, because if people order the same thing there is no method of discerning who ordered what. When I came for lunch, I ordered one of the quickest meals possible to avoid the crappy service, a grilled cheese, and yet even though only 30-40ish people were there it still took an hour for me to get it. Same service issues when I got a burger for dinner but it was more understandable because there was upwards of a 100 people there. Overall the food was good and it's spacious and has Cornhole but it was dirty and loud and although they have refills on soft drinks ur gonna have to wait 30 minutes to get one, to top off their service. Go simple on the food there, because my friends didn't enjoy the tacos, but all of the traditional American food was good. Probably should be expected in Iowa lmao. read more

We went here for my sister's wedding dinner and it was so much fun! I do wish they sold more alcohol rather than only their own/Iowa craft beers. Expanding selection would definitely help boost options and sales. The food was delicious. My party loved their cauliflower dish. She quickly seated us at the bar, recommended what to order that was quickest. The bartender was awesome awesome. Great recommendations on food and beverages. We were in and out quickly. You must get there Amish Pretzel, the pretzel is fantastic and the pimento cheese dip and mustard are both amazing! Some of the best I've ever had. We got a couple different kinds of taco here, the Street and the Asian. Both were very tasty. The tortilla chips are fried and very delicious. The fries are very good too. Ok, let's be strait, I have been to a lot of breweries in my life.. It's well known among my friends that I dig beer! I gotta say, I have never been to a brewery like this.. WOWOWOW! This place is absolutely incredible! First off it's huge! 2nd you could sit and chill, you could play games, there's an area for the kids to play, its sleek and modern but still feels like a brewery. The bathrooms were really rad and I was impressed that in the urinal they had a thing that said, "you hold the power to end sexual assault, in your hand." I thought that was really unique, cool, and powerful statement to have in you urinal! The beer was great, I got the IPA and I ended up having 2. I also ordered some food, chips and salsa's, and pita hummus plate, both were really fantastic! The staff was super nice and I got to say, that this place went big and knocked it out of the park! A lovely, huge brewery with as much attention to the food as it has towards its beer. While it has creative beer selections (and pretty gourmet-feeling food selections), the food can definitely tend towards the expensive side here, so it's mostly going to be a great drinking establishment for us. PROS: -This location is HUGE. It's intense. It may be one of the biggest food establishments in all of Waterloo. As others have mentioned, it used to be a Wonderbread factory. So yeah, it's a big space. -Large variety of seating for you. Want quieter? They have booths and small tables. Love the bar atmosphere? Tons of long tables and benches near the bar. Bar stool seating too. -Has games too. I saw darts, and informative stuff on the table said you can check out any of their (pretty decent) selection of board games for free as well. They also have a shuffleboard table. -While food is expensive, it's clear that both Single Speed Brewing locations take "local is best" seriously. They're partnered up with quite a few local farms and dairies to bring -There's a Sidecar Coffee attached right to this brewery near the restrooms. I haven't tried it, but if you have a DD during daylight hours, they may be able to get some coffee from next door to drink with your group. Single Speed also has milk, water, and soda. -Different types of seating. Just want a beer with friends and maybe an appetizer? There's a huge self-service seating area. Seat yourself, get up when you want things, and enjoy each other's company. If you want company or just enjoy being waited on, there's a waited tables area where you'll have a waiter/waitress. Most of the self-service area is long tables and benches, so keep that in mind depending upon your preferences. -Large variety of beers. They have the standard flavors (such as your "Budlight lookalike"), but Single Speed loves to experiment, so they have lots of non-standard flavors too. Sidecar-Coffee-infused stouts, sour beers, fruity beers - all sorts of stuff. Flights are affordable (and well-presented), and it's clear the establishment definitely cares about their beer and beer's presentation. -Food was pretty decent too. First time I went to a Single Speed location and had their pretzels, they were pretty meh. This time around, it was a lot better. The pretzels were beautiful (and tasty), and the fries were nicely seasoned. It's clear this isn't just "microwave and serve" type of food. Lots of spices, unique flavor combinations, and piping hot, soft freshness. It's definitely a refreshing change from most breweries. Love was put into the food too. CONS: -Food is expensive here. It's *not* over-priced. The ingredients, the uniqueness, and the plain freshness made the food worth it, but it's certainly not a cheap meal for the evening. Their menus (and prices!) are online for you to look at before you go, but even the appetizers start at $9 and head up to $16. -Surprising amount of children here - even on a Saturday evening. Like, woah. Most of them were pretty controlled, but it just seemed a bit odd to see so many children in a drinking establishment. -As a note, the menu specifically says NO substitutions - only omissions to any of their food choices. The blue cheese dressing was super watery, just not what you expect from that kind of dressing. We would have ordered a different entree, but we thought we were getting a deal on the wings. Some friends and I decided to check this place out for a late dinner over the Holiday Season - we were thinking that we wanted to be somewhere that was casual enough for us to take the time to catch up after moving away from one another but minus the boring and usual food choices. This place was just that! The only reason I'd say it's 4 out of 5 stars is because I'm sure they often get ticketed for packing in customers above the capacity limit... After searching for about 10 minutes for somewhere to sit (with no help from the staff) we FINALLY found some open seating. But wait... it was Serve Yourself and A KIDS AREA. WTF? Didn't feel right to get buzzed in front of kiddos. Found another seat on our own which was also a Serve Yourself spot, and that went okay - your basic order from the bar, take a number situation. Anyway, on a more positive note, the food was pretty decent. We ordered cinnamon bread (so good) as an appetizer and then munched on the Iowa flatbread and brisket and tofu/cauliflower sliders (which came with yummy fresh and well seasoned fries). As Singlespeed is a brewery, the beer selections we all ordered and passed around to taste were delicious. I've come here a few times now, the visits were a year apart. The food is good and the beer is usually pretty good. Service is always great. I just have to know, WHAT IS UP WITH THE FRUIT FLIES?! On a recent trip home to the 'loo my brother dragged the family here on Mother's Day (though neither his wife/mother of his dragons nor our mother like craft beer) he insisted we had to see what 'they' did to the old wonderbread factory...what they did was quite cool. Large open beautiful space, with large communal tables (other options for seating as well) that transformed the factory space. The food looked delish and the beer was pouring...some I liked...some, well not to my flavor buds but I am sure is is for someone else's palate. We have been to 4 different breweries in eastern Iowa and Singlespeed is by FAR the best! Whirled Wide Haze is super good! We are IPA lovers and that along with Victory Dance are the best we've had in the state. (Side note: Pseudo Sue out of Toppling Goliath in Decorah is great too, just never been there). The brewery space is easy to access and comfortable, and the food was delicious. We had the Amish pretzels and the cauliflower. It was spicy but so flavorful I couldn't stop eating it-lol. We also visited: Front Street & Stompbox, both in Davenport. Stompbox beer was decent, and the connected restaurant, Kitchen Brigade, looked good. The view of the Mississippi from FS was nice but we'd pass on their beers. In Moline we stopped at Bent River and it was better than FS but not as good as Stompbox. We are headed to Dimensional in Dubuque on Saturday. . . For reference, some of our all time favorites include: Jai Alai, Hazy Little Thing, Tangerine Express, and many MN brews including those from Uncommon Loon, Ursa Minor, Castle Danger & Fair State. read more

We've been dying for a chance to get over and try it (not to mention the agony of waiting for it to open because we were so excited!), and we finally went to celebrate tonight with beers and supper. Beer: Firstly, their beers are delicious. We already know this. It's been established in their first location in Cedar Falls. Beers: deliciousness. Food: I do love me some Flatbread Fridays, and I was excited to try out this new location with a full kitchen to see what they can do when they have more room to flex their fingers. I wasn't disappointed. My husband had the pork tacos, and I had the burger with pork on top (noticing a trend?). Everything was amazing. Did I mention the burgers are a hamburger, pork, and bacon combo all ground together? Oh, yes. The fries had rosemary. I love rosemary. And I'm pretty sure the ketchup was homemade! Location: This is an old Wonderbread factory. It's so neat to see the things they left like the oven switches, the sign outside on the building, and the bathroom stall doors are old cooler doors! It's a historical building, which is cool. Plus, there's a dining hall AND a huge beer hall and bar. Environment: SingleSpeed took so much care in renovating this space. #vegan My low score comes from my food options. Ive been here before with friends and they basically had nothing for me to eat, even the flatbread had honey. Recently I learned they were offering the vegan IMPOSSIBLE BURGER. Now I think this burger is delicious so I hastily went to try it. The burger itself is a 2$ extra charge (regular 12$ burger +fry). Well... they dont have any vegan friendly buns, mustard or really anything else to offer me. So I got a patty on a bed of lettuce with this red sauce they call ketchup (awful) and it cost me $14. Absolutely ridiculous. The burger was pretty good... but you'd think considering it was all I could eat maybe they would drop the extra charge. So a very pricey unfilling lunch. Though I do recommend trying a full burger with the vegan patty if you are able. The place itself if nice. It is really big, high ceilings, enjoy the decor, tons of options for seating - including a little spot for kids and there are a few games along the side. Big open windowed area to see the brewing canisters. Staff was also nice. I wish I could love this place but unfortunately it is not a vegan friendly location. read more

Let's get this out of the way:I am not the target demographic for this restaurant. This restaurant seems built by and for hipster foodies; I am one but not the other. This is the type of place I call "millennial pretentious," and the Cedar Valley has plenty of them. The place was an old Hostess factory that has been re-purposed and has that "refurbished loft" feel to it...sort of recycled-chic. Don't get me wrong, though, the food is good. It's a bit spendy but if you are looking to expand your food consciousness a bit then this is an interesting choice. The service is not fast but I didn't find it horrible any of the times I've been there. The plates take presentation seriously and the food is tasty...pretentious but tasty. The menu is a bit limited but that's a good thing. They do a few things well rather than a lot of things mediocre. A chef once said to avoid places with huge menus...what is the likelihood they do all that stuff well and how likely is it that all that food is fresh? So, if you're 20 - 35 years old and have disposable income then this place may tickle your fancy. If you're a bit older then it may be an interesting experience...once. read more

I love to support local business in Waterloo I haven't been there since they refused to host a political after election party. I decided that if they don't want business they don't want mine. I did go back after about three years, and you have to order everything on your phone? I really appreciate personal service, and that just doesn't do it. You order the food and drinks and then you tip, I'm thinking I did all the waitress work why should i tip 20 percent? They did bring what I ordered and maybe they have a hard time getting help like most places do but come on. This isn't New York or Chicago. The only time you saw the servers was when they brought that I did everything for. I would gladly have picked it up to. Really nice outdoors bar with plenty of seating. Good beer (I had the Cheap Sunglasses gose). The salmon tacos had a ton of good, flakey fish in them. A tiny bit spicy. Could have been warmer, but that's ok. I think they may make their own ketchup, it tasted homemade. My husband had the pork carnitas tacos and said they tasted great, but he said there could have been more pork in them. Our friend had the buffalo cauliflower tacos and said it was super hot buffalo sauce, but good. I almost got those over the salmon, but I'm glad I didn't since I don't do super hot buffalo sauce. Pro Tip: If you're traveling to/from the Des Moines area while on a visit to Toppling Goliath up in Decorah, stop here and be hungry. Heck, come here for any reason - the food here is top notch, and the beer is worth your time too. Set in an old Wonder Bread factory, we were amazed how big this place is. I think they have the longest bar I've ever seen (suggest sitting closer to the kitchen, service will be a little more attentive there). Love their branding and labels, and the beer these represent are pretty good too. Really enjoyed their tart/sour offerings. The lo-pHizzibility kettle sour was nice and tart balanced by fruit and hibiscus, while the Ring Around the Gose is worth the medals it has won - tart, salty, and a hint of sweet malt. Their Tip The Cow is an excellent coffee stout as well. Their hoppy offerings were ok, nothing off-putting, just didn't please my taste buds as much as the others I mentioned. Everything we had was well-brewed. And that food I mentioned. One of the best chicken and waffles we've ever had. Available on their regular menu, both the chicken and waffles are made with their Tip The Cow coffee stout. Makes it look like both are overcooked, but quite the opposite. Mix these with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and hot sauce (yes, hot sauce) makes the perfect concoction. Their biscuits and gravy are equally impressive, with some of the best gravy I've had with the chicken sausage, and perfectly executed flaky biscuits. And their burgers are great too! Lots of interesting topping combinations. (yes, we stopped here twice while driving through Iowa on the same trip) Just a really cool space with great food and solid beer. The restaurant was approximately half full walking up to the restaurant asked one of the waitresses if I can have a seat at the bar she said no. Did not provide any other options. Went back to the hostess stand stood there for 10 minutes no one acknowledged me after that went to the bar set is there a hostess you mumbled something walked away. This place is fantastic. I had the chicken and waffles and I absolutely loved it. The waffles were fluffy and tasty while the chicken was seasoned well and very moist. It had a slight kick to it with the buffalo sauce added on there. The atmosphere was really great. I'm sure on a weekend this place would be packed, even with room for over 300 people. I also had the perestroika beer and that had such a great taste to it and complemented the chicken and waffles well. They also have tabletop shuffle board, pinball, and darts to keep you busy if you want to play. Definitely come check this place out! You don't want to miss it! read more
