Not crazy about this new-fangled "industrial" decor. I guess people will go for just about anything. And talk about minimalism! You'd think the view of the water must be spectacular but not one window in my room- why?? I guess there must have been some kind of tattoo convention in town, going by the other guests. Bunch of control freaks run this place. Manager was busting my chops just because I had my light on late at night. I can understand electricity bills, but really? Truth be told, I woke up here after a real 2-day bender my girlfriend told me I was on, so I don't remember checking in at all. Next time I will know better. Quite foreboding from the outside but we decided to check it out anyway. Staff seemed sad to be there but they checked us in and gave us our complimentary set of pajamas. They're no Calvin Kleins but they're a great shade of orange! The other attendees were so welcoming, they all stopped eating their lunch to look at us. My boyfriend got pulled away by a staff member and separated from me which was pretty rude but then I got to have some girl time with a colorful group of riveting women. I thought I might stay the night but they didn't have any ocean view rooms available so I decided to slip out the back as to not hurt anyones feelings. I haven't heard from my boyfriend still so maybe he decided to stay and kick it with the guys a little longer. Will I try it out again? Perhaps, but they definitely need to hire a better chef if they want this place to be successful. read more

I enjoyed coming to the parking lot of Sing Sing with Robert Klein on an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I found the guards to be polite and accommodating. Even when they threatened legal action unless we removed ourselves from the premises. I would recommend this prison if you have to do hard time. Many reviews say I would return. In the processing area, you will see family members shunned away for various attire technicalities. I personally, had to go into a bathroom once and take the stitching out of my shirt with my teeth, because I wasn't allowed on the visiting floor with that color stitching in my shirt (black thread on the back of a white shirt). During one visit after being turned away from visiting three times, I finally came back totally confident that I was appropriate enough to visit and wouldn't get refused again and a C.O said to me "You are one determined woman". It seems as though the correctional officers will see and say anything to get a visitor to have to go home. Male C.O. officers love to flirt with the inmates female visitors. They are often inappropriate in ways in which they grab and hold the woman's hand to put a stamp on in it while in an area that is just inches away from the visiting room. You would have been pleasantly surprised to see that the vending machines contained $5 salads, fruit and real food (rice and beans with onion and green peppers) along with $1.50 chips, candy and even $4 ice-cream for the visitors and inmates to eat while in the visit room. However, as you look around the visiting room, you will immediately notice how EMPTY it is. Consider the prisons population and the small size of the visit room, on any given day one would visit, there would only be no more than 10 - 12 families having a visit. Thats no more than 10-12 inmates on a visit per day. There are about twelve empty tables each visit. This correction facility has great continuing education programs and art programs for inmates, SingSing is very boastful about their accolades in administering such programs to their inmates. Michael Capra, the superintendents message is to be able to have the inmates identify or re-identify what it means to be a man, and obtain skills that will make them valuable individuals within their communities once they leave the correctional facility. Keep in mind, that this IS a Maximum Security prison, majority of the inmates hold sentences of life and/or beyond. Perhaps Michael Capra wants these men to be valuable citizens of their communities when they are released from the prison at the tinder age of 105. It's obviously clear he means "communities" as in other correctional facility communities; which is helpful. However, Whether an inmate is going home to his family soon or not, is no reason to isolate him from his loved ones and friends. The amazing programs this Correctional Facility offers it's inmates are nice and indeed needed; it is also necessary to not make it so difficult for inmates to be able to see their friends and loved ones. Especially if one is looking to shape a well-rounded individual that can be valuable to his community once released. read more

Absolutely terrible. Sing-Sing Correctional is terrible beyond words... and it took a lot of strength to open up this tab and start this review. I'm a 36 year old man, 6 foot 3, 255 pounds. Let me put it this way-- I'm not the type to back down from a fight, and I'm definitely not the type to watch injustice unfold under my nose without doing something about it. When I got to the Central Dormitory, it took Officer Higley over 10 minutes to find me a vacant room. Strike 1 for Sing-Sing. I get to my room and lay down to test out my bed. I look up at the ceiling and what I saw next says it all... There was peanut butter smudged on the ceiling! And I'm allergic to peanut butter! I asked Higley for a new room- one that was P.B. free, and he had the audacity to say "You ain't goin' nowhere so get comfy." What kind of concierge speaks like that? At this point I would have given Sing-Sing a 3 star rating. But what happened to me the next morning was too much. I was in the Cafe, and I joined Queeth and Abdul at their table. Abdul pointed out how sad this cafe really was... No music and a plain white interior decor! Whoever designed this place must have been going for a real basic look. Almost on cue, an alarm starts going off. The alarm must have created a bad vibe, because seemingly at the same time everyone started fighting! Still a 3 star rating. What really did it for me is that these guys took my belt and shoelaces, promised to keep them safe, and never returned them! Def. calling my lawyer. read more

The food is quite good but the service is terrible. The guards should be more responsive to customer service and the wake up time should be later than 5:30 AM. I spent 10 years there and would consider going back if I could bring my family. read more
