Seems like a place where a lot of university folks hang out. My party of 6 or so arrived at around 11pm on a Thursday in November, and it was rammed solid. A lot of chatter, yelling, party-ness, etc. We came simply for the imported beer, which as expected was a long list. I forgot what I ordered exactly, but it was definitely one of the more unique beers I've drank...and it actually tasted quite good. Service, however, was understaffed, and the fact there were simply too many people in the pub gave me a negative sense of ambience and experience overall. The beauty of this place is that you can drink & have fun while redeeming yourself by silently praying to St. Patrick's Catholic Church right beside it. I guess this is how the restaurant has its name in the first place. Brilliant. I brought my date here for our dinner; I'd say the experience was pleasant in general. Although the food was spectacular (the French fries was impressive though), the great atmosphere did make up for it. We were sitting right beside the "window" that is not covered by glass, so it felt like we were actually dining at a patio. Guess what? I was directed here since a friend lives a block over. We originally had just stopped in to grab a drink before starting our slow, beer filled walk down to catch a concert in Queen West, but decided to stay for food once we saw the menu. The beer menu is expansive. I tend to fold in the face of too many options and this was no exception. I ended up trying an organic cider since I wanted to keep it light, but I think I poured over the menu for a solid 15 minutes trying to decide what to get. I split the Bavarian sausages (delicious) and had the Trappist mussels and frites for myself. The food was outstanding; I would definitely stop back in here again for a more substantive meal and see what else they have to offer. The menu features mostly Bavarian-type pub fare but also some typical bar food for the less adventurous eaters. The dining room we were in was a little cramped, but you'll hear no complaints from me. We made it work. The ambiance was awesome--dimly lit and intimate and the service was also very attentive and kind. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, this is definitely worth a stop whether you're looking for food or drink. Comfy place by the AGO with surprisingly good food and an extensive beer selection. I ordered the smoked salmon wrap and it was massive ! Came with boiled eggs inside and a nice sized salad to top it off. We also ordered the flatbread braised beef and it was pretty good too although a bit bland in flavour. There is a large selection of beers on tap here if you are looking for variety. I enjoy fruity beers a lot so I am quite pleased that they stock some of my favs such as a liefmans and fruli. They also have some high 10 per cent alcohol beers as well if you are into that kind of drink. The service was good but I thought the waitress was a little pushy when recommending beers as opposed to allowing people to choose their own liking. I never tried the food so I can't comment on it. But this place has a nice atmosphere and a good place to chat. read more

They have a great beer selection. We were a group of 4 and we all loved what we ordered. I was feeling Belgian so I had a La Chouffe and a La Trappe Tripel. Both were pretty good. Wife had a Rikorderlig Cider and it was the best cider we ever tasted. My friend fancied wheat beer so he ordered Weihenstephaner and a Jopen. He liked them both too. His wife tried O'Hara Irish stout, this was probably the least liked beer of all. All in all it was a great tasting experience. It wasn't a hip pub with live music, but a more English pub style decor. The food menu didn't look great but the beer selection is top-notch. The prices are pretty reasonable too. read more

This is one of those places that has an interesting interior and focuses on trying to keep an above decent selection of Draft and import beers in stock. Which makes it VERY interesting as that puts it into direct competition with The Village Idiot next door -- which although has a more pub-like decor has a fairly large selection of beers as well. Which one is better? Prices and selection are almost on par, as most of the beers are in the $6-$8 range, but the reality of the matter is that it really depends on the decor you prefer. Since both places are in other regards, *almost* the same. Since perhaps they did not think anyone would notice but their beer menus, aside the country ordering of BOTH locales are almost identical. I would say S&R is one of the few pubs that I actually want to go back every friday! They have good selection of beer and FOOD too! I was a frequent patron of this place during my University years and still was for their great beer selection until Friday. Their service has gone to shits with an elder male server who never has a smile on his face and another male server (I believe has a South African accent) who has the worst attitude. It was free doughnut day from Krispy Kreme and my friend brought a doughnut in without thinking. When he was done munching on it, the elder server snatched the wrapper out of his hand (wtf) and our other server was disgustingly rude about it. My friend told him politely that it never crossed his mind and if it was a problem, he should've stopped him at the door (ironic as he was the one who seated us). The server rolled his eyes and made more sarcastic comments about bringing food to a restaurant. He was condescending and I would dare say crazy as our table of 8 sat there dumbfounded, shocked that anyone would speak to a customer like this. Worst of all, the place did not have a bloody manager to make a complaint to. Sin & Redemption, great beer selection but pity with the poor choice of servers, perhaps you should do something about it as you have and will continue to lose customers with those attitudes! read more

Quite an average establishment. The GOOD: The BEER selection is one of the best for foreign beers in the city of Toronto. They really do have a nice selection of Belgians on tap especially, including some of the ones you almost never see on tap. The draft list is complemented with a very thorough selection of bottles...again you taste your way through the Trappist brews at less than the cost of Beer Bistro or Bier Markt. In fact, these are some of the fairest bottle prices anywhere in Toronto, which I really appreciate. They don't have a ton of Canadian beer on tap, but that's not really the point here. ***** 5 stars for BEER selection and value. Some of the FOOD is successful. In particular the mussels are pretty good, as well as some of the flat breads. These are tasty and reasonably priced, but not excellent. The BAD: Some of the FOOD is pretty terrible. After a few tries, I've learned that the burger isn't even passable. It's dry, rubbery, and disgusting. The fish and chips are highly variable in quality: sometimes they're light and cripsy, othertimes, they're swimming in oil and soggy. In fact, that's true of most of the menu. Each time I order something new, there's a 50/50 chance that it'll be fairly good or fairly bad. ** 2 stars for the FOOD quality The SERVICE is also more bad than good. While, there are some standout servers at times, this place has a fundamental problem. The servers are not permitted to try the beers, either as beer education nor even when they come to the restaurant while not working. As a result, they have absolutely no ability to competently discuss the beer or make recommendations. Sometimes they admit to this, other times they just ad lib blindly. The rest of service is also pretty inconsistent. I blame management (I'm told ownership is responsible) squarely for this. **2 stars for SERVICE OVERALL, this is a good place to come for a pint or two of pretty awesome foreign beer, priced fairly. I came here with a few friends after doing an event at another place. The server we had was very friendly though I found the host to be semi-rude. He wasn't really rude, but it just seemed like he had a long day. I got the sense he was giving some attitude off. This bar is much better spaced out than the Village Idiot next door (which was insanely loud - and I can tolerate loud noise) and cramped. What I liked about this bar was that they had plenty of vegetarian options and even a really good dish that had couscous, lentils and mixed veggies which was very good. Beer selection is great for such a small pub. Prices are about mid range. Not sure who the manager/owner is (neither seem to be around at any time) but they need to work on creating a more intimate atmosphere. Almost every time I've been in I've requested that the lights to be lowered, (come night time) and the music turned up (it is almost always inaudible) Those two annoyances aside, Sin and Redemption is a good place to taste some imports that you don't often find. Some of the decor screams of a cheap student bar (ie. electric 'candles' that fake the real thing), but you almost wouldn't notice if their lighting was better. Pretty surprised about the negative comments about the service and the folks who go here 'cause these are two of my favourite things about Sin & Redemption! Every time I've gone, it's been with a big group of people on a busy night and the staff works to make room for us while not disturbing the rest of the bar. They are SO friendly and attentive and put up with my shenanigans. Heh. As already mentioned, the beer selection is pretty incredible. And you can get any beer in a two pint-sized challis. I won't hold the staff against me for poking fun at my favourite concoction -- Fruli in the massive challis! ; ) Like the atmosphere as well. If you like trying new types of beers then you'll love this place. There's a ton of different types, but my favourite that i've tried so far is delirium (high percentage alcohol + good flavour = awesome times). The drink menu can be daunting at first, but if you know the type of beer you like the waiters will be happy to recommend something, and so far all their favourites were to our liking. I've been here a couple times, the first being a friend's birthday where we ordered a ton of different stuff off the menu. Everything was very good (albiet definitely not healthy), and our favourite was probably the assorted sausages. The other stuff we ordered was typical pub food and hit the spot for a bunch of drunk hungry people. Service has been hit or miss, the first time we went the drinks took FOREVER to show up, we couldn't understand why it took so long to pour a couple beers. But when we ordered 5 different food items, they all showed up super fast, so props to the kitchen staff! The other times it's been mostly attentive and they didn't mind us loitering long after finishing our beer, which was nice. You definitely will have to flag down the waiter when you want them, as they usually don't check up on you (which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you like your service). read more

Service was SLOW. Insanely slow. I had to stalk our server until he finally took our order 30 minutes after arriving... then I had to wait another 25 minutes to actually put in my food order. He also never came to check on us during the meal and didn't give me the extra lemon or drink I ordered... i felt like a burden on him, constantly having to flag him down which is definitely not something a server should be making you feel. Also the charcuterie board I had wasn't that great for the price. The only redeeming thing about this place is the ambiance and that fruuli is on tap. They have a good selection of food but that's not the main attraction here. Their main appeal is more known for their big book of different beers/drinks. Price is reasonable with drinks as with the food. Great place to come here with friends, but might be a bit of a wait for large groups. Upon first visit, you may be a bit shocked of the amount of arm chairs and how crowded it can get. It can get very loud but that's how it should be if the place has good drinks! When we asked for more water at the end, she literally smirked, rolled her eyes and mumbled something under her breath. We were stunned, looked at each other and was like "is she mad at us or something?". I guess she heard, came back and said "no I'm not mad, it's just that everyone asks for water at the end...you know it's a waiter thing." WTF?!? Five stars! Great beer & delicious high-quality cheap food, count me in! A great place to go out to with beer loving friends. I used to live across the street from the place just when it opened, so it was my regular joint for food and drink. I may be a girl, but I love my beer regardless. Their beer is always great, and because of the huge selection of draft beer don't overlook the bottled beer. I usually favour Dunkel quadrupple, Leffe brune, Delirium, Czechvar, Delirium, Fluri and Kwak (You get to drink Kwak from hourglass shaped mug). Anyway, it is great experience every time! I and a few fellow foodies decided to check this place out for the "hell" of it. The name alone was enticing enough but the menu was also intriguing. Sin & Redemption did not disappoint at all! Contrary to other reviews we read, the experience all round was great! I can understand why some felt that the food could have been better in comparison to the beer. But this is only because the beer itself was friggin amazing and overshadows the rest of the menu. When you take the beer out of the equation and look at the food in the context of itself, the food is also really good. From the beef rib app, to the fries and lamb shank, the meal overall was very satisfying and well proportioned. To top it all off, the service was great. The atmosphere of this spot is also very welcoming; a great place to come and hang with friends, grab some good quality beer and a bite if you're hungry. Our waitress specifically was very charming and although new by only a couple of weeks new how to engage her clientele. Wit and a good sense of humor along with never losing sight of your customers' needs go a long way in making an experience a great one. We will definitely be returning. A good, solid place for an impromptu night out, 3.5 stars. Especially for beer lovers! We've come here as an intimate dinner for two, a casual dinner for two, a big hurrah etc and the space is good for all of those things. Sin and Redemption would definitely get 5 stars if their servers actually went through the specials with you. We only realised after leaving that we could've had a pulled pork poutine for dinner! Why have specials if you're not going to 1. list them verbally or 2. put them as an insert in the menu? I actually didn't even know they had specials until tonight, and I've been here more than a handful of times. I've always found the place to be clean, beer is served in the proper glasses and servers are decent (other than the above complaints). read more

This is the kind of bar that you would bring someone to show them that you know a thing or two about beer. The kind of bar to show that you've matured from the college PBR drinking fool to the mature beer connoisseur. For me, this is all just an act because I don't know that much about beer myself, but I do appreciate the variety of beer that Sin & Redemption has. I usually order the Stiegl, or if I'm on a date or am already too wasted and want to slow down I get the Stiegl Radler, which is Stiegl mixed with grapefruit juice... it sounds weird but it's quite refreshing. The pub food here is great. The duck fat fries and fish and chips are very well done, by a real chef and not a college kid being paid minimum wage. I love how impressed everyone is with their wide selection. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy trying different beers as much as the next guy, but it's not like there's any dearth of pubs in town with interesting micro brews. The idea that I've so fully worked my way up and down every tap in town that I need this joint as a real treat seems weird. To me it's more like Baskin Robbins of beer. Sure, it's delicious and sure there are tons of flavors, but it's expensive and kind of soul-less. The food is fine, totally standard fare, and not too expensive, so no complaints there. The one thing I will say is that when I sat down with a group of friends, the waiter launched in to an extended joke about how "gays probably won't like this meal too much." A joke that fell flat with the two gay couples I was sitting with. When we brought it up, instead of apologizing he stuck by his guns, that what he was saying wasn't offensive because it was true - apparently gay men hate beer. When we wanted to talk to the manager, everyone in the place deferred and said he was either in the next room, downstairs or not in that day. Obviously it was a pretty crummy experience, but you can't slight the whole bar for a kind of douch-y server. Mostly I just feel that the place isn't that special and if it has more character than Jack Astor's as @Kent P suggests, then it's no more than a thimbleful more. read more

I went here with a couple of friends the other day and everyone enjoyed their lunch so the food is pretty reasonable too. Thank god the Ontario Art Museum is next door so you have a great place to sober up before trying to get home....... A special shout out goes to the server we had. Absolutely outstanding. I have to rate this place fairly low not because of the restaurant itself, but because of the crowd. Maybe this place might be more impressive in the summer when the front windows can be open, because during fall to winter transition I had a hard time enjoying myself. First off I have to say that the number and selection of taps at this place is some of the best I've experienced in the city. They have a wide variety of beers to choose from (check their menu) coming from over the world. I had a change to try 3 or 4 beers I've never had before. Even better, they offered 2 sets of flights of taster beer. They include 3 different beers to sample. The food at this place was probably above average I think. I had the fish n' chips and my wife had a burger. The food is good for what it is. The guy who served us was also prompt and pleasant. Why didn't I enjoy this place then? Everyone in this place decided that they had to yell at each other to talk even when there was no music playing. The noise level in this place was unreal. The place seems like its filled mostly with UofT peeps hanging out. Unfortunately my university time has passed. I would love to go back to this place but I can't get over the fact I have to yell across the table to have a conversation; especially since this place is a sit down establishment with few to no standing areas read more

I don't know why I'm not a bigger fan of this place. I guess because it's always decent, but never great. Oh yeah, and the service is USUALLY slow (today was an exception at least on the latter front. In and out in 45 minutes). If I was a real stickler, I'd deduct another star for the ridiculuous number of speeling mistokes on the memu. The beer selection here is enough to keep everyone happy; I had the Fullers London Porter, my friend balanced out the universe by having Stella Legere. We both went for the pork tenderloin, having tried it before and been very pleased. The pork was savoury and came swimming in a delicious mushroom gravy which kept it moist. The fries were tasty and the veg was nothing to scoff at (although standard fare and nothing more). My dining partner and I were both disappointed with the portion size (I counted four motuthfuls of meat on the whole plate) and when we brought this to our server's attention she was good enough to bring out a second helping on the house. Still, I remember the portion being a significantly larger last time (even after the topup) and am not sure what the future holds for this plate. read more

Good for after-work drinks because they have a long beer list and I always find something new or different to try. Not good if you're hungry, because their food portions are small. I ordered a meatball appetizer for $9 and it came with 5 small meatballs. Yup, $2 per meatball...I hate when I can count how much each piece on the plate costs. It kills my buzz!! The venue looks like a converted house, which I find charming and interesting. In summer they have those garage door windows that open, so it's like sitting on a patio but with better shade and shelter. Staff was alright, no music at all which was odd. The fruit fly chemical strips hanging from the bar are disgusting, and should only be put up at night! Beer selection is pretty decent, what with three types of Koningshoeven (the ONLY Dutch Trappist Ale) on tap, but the food, as noted by pretty much everyone else, blows. Just because you call it a frite does not give it any more cachet than a simple french fry, which it is. Everything on the menu looked overpriced, so I stuck to the burger. Service is pretty decent, but I was there Sunday at 3 PM, not exactly a prime time, and yes, I did notice that the music sucked. read more

I've made a few trips here this summer as I work on McCaul and Orde street with my work group as well as with friends, and I must say it has been quite enjoyable. Most of my trips here have been during the day for a drink and once for lunch. So I must point out I can't say too much about their overall food here. I had the Nun's Pasta and wasn't blown away but it was not a big regret in my life. The majority of my group did seem to have enjoyed their food here very much. They have a good beer list and if you're in the mood to try out a few good pints I highly suggest coming over here. Matching beer mugs are always fun too. A plus over their neighbour the Village Idiot Pub (another establishment I enjoy) is that their beer list has description with the varying alcohol content of each drink. I tried out a 10% beer and if you like dark beers and getting drunk, I highly recommend it. If not, they have at least one other beer at 9% or more if you don't want to go all the way out to 10%! Their servers are friendly enough, as it's always busy when I'm there. No complaints in terms of service. One minor negative I have is that I am not a huge fan of the crowds here (and at the Village Idiot Pub), there's nothing wrong with them really, just not the type of crowd I would like to share a venue often. Not all undergrads, but late 20s/early30s seems more of a majority. Note: refrain from attending on a garbage night as the street does stink up real well on those nights! read more

Sin & Redemption is another one of my go-to places (also included in that list is it's next door neighbour, Village Idiot). If you've been to Village Idiot, Sin & Redemption is it's classy older sibling. The best thing about this place is of course, the colossal beer list! They have so many great beers, tons of which are from Belgium (which goes with the whole Belgian feel of the place). Another perk is menu, which has a flatbread section (all delicious), as well as burgers, belgian frites, and delicious entrees such as beef stew. My only complaint about this place is the suspicious food timing. I'm not a fan of a restaurant who can turn over my order in less than 10 minutes - if you're not a fast food place, I know you're operating your kitchen like one! On my most recent visit, my burger and friends stew were out in about 8 minutes. My burger was kind of cold (cheese half-melted) which confirmed my suspicion that this burger wasn't made fresh for me. That being said, the frites were hot and delicious as always, and my friend's stew was also quite tasty! The service here is always good too - the staff are always quite funny and personable. If you're looking for a "classy" pub with reasonable prices, definitely keep it in mind! read more

Sin & Redemption is across the street from a church, which makes it so much more amazing in my mind. Located off the beaten path, it was a hidden gem thanks to our fellow Yelpers! We loved trying a bunch of different beers and martinis and a few snacks. The place is beautiful with dark wood and a cozy feel. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and we appreciated that as we looked through the beer list. Very attentive but not annoyingly so.
