I love this place. I used to come here years ago, and moved away. I just moved back and was delighted to see that it was still here, with its insanely large list of rare and delicious beers from Belgium, Holland, Germany and beyond! I've only been back for 3 weeks and I've already been 3 times. And sent several people to this place. So far, we've tried various draft and bottled beers, and have had their schnitzel and poutine. During the day, it is disconcertingly quiet, but I was really happy to see that on a Friday night it was absolutely packed with "young" people (Millennials and Gen Z), and everyone seemed to be having a great time. He also ordered chicken drumsticks. I got the Redeemer burger with fries. The fries tasted good but they were a little too greasy. I think they didn't allow the oil to drain long enough. The burger was good but I didn't like the bun. I'm picky! LOL. Hubby said his chicken wrap & fries were delicious. Service: We had a young guy as our waiter & he had an interesting accent that I couldn't place. Hubby asked him & turns out he's from Kazakhstan. He was impressed that hubby guessed his accent right. Ambiance: Given this is an old building the layout is a bit odd. I heard the building was a former funeral home. Anyway, there are three small rooms for dining. The bar is at the back of the middle room & it looked like it was on a raised level. The decor is medium tone wood tables, club chairs and upholstered banquette seating. They try to make the most of the space but the club chairs take a lot of room. So when the bar is full it ends up being awkward to manouvere around everyone. Washrooms are downstairs. 3 stalls for women. It's a little run down but given the age of the building it's decent. We came back around 9.30pm for dessert after attending an event in the area & the bar was totally full. We had the belgian waffle with maple syrup. We had a lady for our waitstaff this time. She was nice but I think she felt a bit harried with all the customers. The only seats we could get were by the window & we were jammed in next to other people. It was pretty loud so we didn't hang around too long. But it was hard to get out of the spot we were in! We decided to pay the bill at the bar because it was so jammed. We were holidaying in Toronto Canada & on Sunday attended St Patricks church in McCaul Street. After leaving the service we noticed a pub nearby across the road aptly named Sin & Redemption. The time was nearing lunch & the hotel was our line of interest. The kitchen was open for the full hours of trading so we did not only have lunch but dinner as well in all the days we were in Toronto. The best choice in Toronto. First time coming here. My boyfriend used to come here all the time for drinks and food when he lived close by. We came during the weekday for an impromptu date night after having a baby since it was close by to Chinatown where did groceries. We got seated at the bar since it was quite busy. We ordered our drinks and food from the bartender. They were out of Guinness so I got something similar, another Irish stout beer and my partner got a beer as well. He got the chicken schnitzel with poutine and I got the burger with an upgraded poutine. My burger was a bit dry and flavourless but my bfs food was tasty with the peppercorn gravy. This is my last visit to Sin and Redemption? Why? 1. The server placed my friend and I right next to the toilets. Yes, there was a fan there. But we would prefer sitting near the windows and there were definitely some empty tables by the windows since we wanted fresh air. Thankfully we got new seats. 2. The food was not good. I had the Nun's Pasta and my friend ordered steak with mashed potatoes. Yes we are aware of the fact that this is a pub, and that pub food isn't typically the best. However, Sin and Redemption is supposed to be a bit more "elevated" compared to other bars...we were disappointed to discover that the Nun's Pasta was rather bland, the steak lacked seasoning and that the mashed potatoes were not cooked properly. In fact, there were bits of potato skin in the mashed potatoes! That is a no-no. 3. Service was inattentive - almost purposely so. We kept looking in the direction of the servers huddled in the back corner (they were gossiping) to take our order/get more water/get our bill. Yes, our main server was busy. But shouldn't the other servers at least grab the attention of our main server so that we can get assistance? They would literally just look at each other and shrug whenever we would look in their direction. I finally had enough and asked "Can we get the bill!?" TWICE. 4. We were blamed when their credit card machines didn't work. My friend used her AMEX card (which does not have a limit) and she was told that their machines were compatible with AMEX cards. She had to try at least three times before she was able to actually able to pay. We were told that there was a wifi issue, but she still got blamed...why couldn't they have just owned up to the shoddy machines? They've already screwed up enough already. Why blame the customer and make things worse? If you're considering coming here for drinks, don't. Take your business elsewhere. There are plenty of nicer bars with better food and much better service. And I'm sure you won't get blamed for anything wrong that has nothing to do with yourself either. read more

I had been here pre-pandemic and everything was always pretty good, but went for brunch recently as was really disappointed with the whole experience. First of all, nobody checked or even asked about proof of vaccination when we arrived, which concerned me. I ordered the bacon and egg puff pastry (sunny side up egg) with a coffee, my friend ordered a burger. The coffee took a while, but it tasted fresh so I don't mind that too much but then the food also took about 30 minutes, and there were only 2 or three other tables seated. When it arrived mine was a waffle with a bunch of scrambled eggs on top and bacon on the side. I told the waiter it was the wrong meal so he said he "thought they were doing waffles for the puff pastry today" but he'd go check. This didn't make any sense to me but after waiting several more minutes he came back and confirmed, yeah they were subbing the waffle for the pastry and was that ok. By this point I was starving and we had timed tickets for the AGO so I didn't have time for a different meal and I said fine, but it's a really weird thing to do. When I turned to eat my waffle and eggs there was no butter, no salt and pepper, no syrup or anything, so I had to wait for those. By the time I was able to eat it was cold, and it wasn't what I ordered and I was really disappointed. My friend's burger was also burned. When the bill arrived, they charged me for the puff pastry even though the waffle breakfasts (which were also menu options) were cheaper. We had to run and I didn't have time to argue it. A small amount of communication: telling me they didn't have what I ordered and could I choose something else, would have been so easy but instead they gave me a completely different meal and tried to pass it off as mine without saying anything. Walking along McCaul towards Baldwin to meet up my Yelp eating friends... Thinking of having a coffee at TAN. Then when I saw the open windows semi patio setup of Sin & Redemption.... I changed my mind since a beer is always better than a coffee after a long working day?! Tables are set up really close together, but does look quite comfy and intimate. After I squeezed into one of the tables closed to the open windows, I was excited to check out their great selections of import beers. Sadly both Fruehli and Sir Perry both not available.... as I was looking for something light and refreshing to celebrate the few last glorious day of the warm weather..... The waiter recommended Somersby Apple Cider ($6.60) the only cider they have on the menu. Since I was here in the early evening for a pre dinner drink on a Saturday. the place was not too busy and the crowd was a lot more mellow. BOTTOM LINE: Before microbreweries and "beer culture" were a thing, there was Sin & Redemption. The stars in this review aren't about the food (never once ordered here), the decor (it's age is clearly showing) or the service (which is adequate), but about the history and staying power of this place in a city bursting of a new microbrewery of the week. I've been coming to Sin & Redemption for over 10 years before I even knew about Yelp and certainly before there was a "beer culture" in the city. It's mainstay are the Belgium beers, which can still be scarce in the city. Their selection in this matter is far and wide and never disappointing (e.g., the Grand Cru Rodenbach, La Trappe Tripel and Quadrupel are my faves). There is also fair selection of various German and Eastern European beers to round things out. These guys have definitely carved a niche for themselves and I would highly recommend swinging by here whenever you in the mood for some of these beers. read more

I dropped by for a drink as I was passing by so this review doesn't apply for food. The draft beer selection is impressive and with a lot of Belgian brands being represented. I am a Delirium Tremens fan and usually order it whenever I see it on draft. The staff was nice and friendly and I was here on a weekday around lunch time. The windows there open out all the way so a nice way to get a patio feel in summer. The place was nearly empty but I can see it getting busy in the evenings. I will come back for food as the menu looked tempting. Update Jan 2014. Came back for food this time. The grub here is unfortunately a sad side show to the impressive beer selection. I had a Rikorderlig Cider and it was the best cider I ever had! The place is a European(German) style pub with a rotating tap menu. We tried their 8 different beers and ciders. Everything was just too good. The ambience is romantic and quiet, its a good place to hang out if you want to talk. Wonderful bar with one of the finest beer and liquor selections available in the city. The food is good and they provide traditional Belgian and Dutch cuisine. When I wanted a certain whiskey they didn't have on the shelf they walked next door to their other bar and got it for me. With service like that it would be hard to imagine that they have any sins to confess. The only thing I could possibly complain about was the higher than should be expected number of fruit flies who joined me for my meal. Overall a nice appetizer but I wish the salmon was sliced instead of diced as the meat kept falling off the flat bread and making a mess. I realized that they might be dicing the smoked salmon so that the tomato can be disguised - makes it look like you're getting a lot of salmon! I also wish there was more Brie, I think they could have used this to their advantage to help bind the toppings but unfortunately the Brie also kept falling off. A group of friends decided to meet here tonight for a drink. I have always known about this place because I often go to Margarita's and Konnichiwa up the street. Anyway, when I found out that we were meeting here, I was stoked because I really wanted to check out this establishment. The pricing at S & R is very reasonable; I'm a huge fan of Fruehli (no umlaut capacity on my computer... I think, anyway) and it cost me $5.60. I have been to quite a few establishments that serve this strawberry flavored beer and I think this is the lowest price that I have seen. As mentioned by previous posters, there is a variety of beers to choose from. My server said today that I could choose from 34 different beers. I was impressed! S & R also serves food, which is a plus if you have not eaten before coming here. My friend ordered the poutine... with a twist! Instead of your regular gravy, this poutine had curry. It was delicious and I definitely want to recreate it at home. The service was excellent. Our server was always available to take our order. He had an impeccable memory given the fact that he was serving 12 people. All in all, I will be back and highly recommend that you check this place out. read more

This place gets downgraded one star. I came here for brunch yesterday with Theresa W. and another friend. I definitely definitely ordered the salmon eggs benny, then stated that I'm allergic to dairy, though I still eat butter (which normally makes hollandaise safe). When the server brought our food she gave me the salmon with spinach salad, covered in grated cheese. I told her it was the wrong thing, and she offered to bring me the eggs benny, but later told me that the hollandaise has milk in it (what?!). We agreed that I would take the original dish she gave me, but with a new cheeseless salad. The salad was fine, but the salmon was overcooked and incredibly dry, and not because it was reheated (it was cold by this time). 3.5 stars - Great International beer selection but lacking in smaller craft beer selections. As soon as I walked in I recognized some of the staff - they work on and off at the Town Crier pub. The pub is a little older than the Town Crier and is starting to show it's age. I do like that all the windows open up (like a garage doors) so the restaurant has a real open feel and a nice breeze in the summer. You have an interesting view of the church across the street and a broad mix of folks walking by. Service was fantastic. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and brought to a nice table by the large open windows. Our server was quick to take our multiple drink orders. Many beers on tap and arranged on the beer menu by Country. I enjoyed some Grimbergen, Maredsous Brune and Hacker-Pschorr lager. My fellow yelper ordered Fruli and Liefmans Fruitesse (yup - chick beers). Good selection of German beers. They had an excellent bottle selection of Belgian beers but nothing was in stock - I gave up after asking for four different beers. How could everything be out of stock? They loose one star here. I didn't try the food but it looked like average pub grub, maybe next time. We came here around 6-6:30pm for dinner on a weekend. The whole place was empty and they seated us right beside a table of 3. We asked if we could move and they basically said no. We were hungry so we decided to stay and ordered some food and drinks. When the food came and they realized they couldn't fit all the plates on our table, they moved us to a bigger table. Now on to the menu. The beer selection was extensive and they have many interesting beers from around the world. The food menu was also quite extensive so you're sure to find something you'll enjoy. The servers here seem to forget that they're at work, and act as if you've broken into their home on a Friday night and are asking them to serve you. Several servers watched my group come in and sit down. After 15 minutes no one had come over to our table, despite being one of three groups in the whole place (a group of 5 servers all stood together leaning over counters and chatting or just generally staring at the walls). We kept attempting to make eye contact with them, which was made several times, just to be seen and ignored. Finally a server breaks away from the group, goes and stands near the front of the restaurant and stares at us. "This is it" I think excitedly, shes going to come over. Nope. She stands there and stares at us for five minutes. I made solid eye contact with this woman for 5 whole minutes while she stood there not moving, eyes glazed over in a daze. Eventually she remembers where she is, wanders over to us and asks "do you need something?" in a perplexed tone that suggests she doesn't understand why anyone who has come to a restaurant would want their order taken at some point. "Can...can we order?" I ask. "Oh. Yes" she says. And then proceeds to walk away without another word. 10 minutes later another server appears who actually takes our order, but service continued in that vein for the whole evening.
