My eyes hurt, looked awful, and made me feel extremely insecure despite being someone who didn't care about appearances before I got sick. My friends and family who knew me before Graves' all agreed that I looked very different. From the very first appointment, Dr. Covici reassured me that what I was feeling was normal - that no one in theirs 20s should have to go through what I had been through with visible proof all over my face. He assured that everything would be treated as medically necessary rather than cosmetic because this was due to a medical condition. He performed numerous tests and reviewed my long medical history to ensure I was ready for surgery. He also reviewed photos of my eyes and face before Graves' so could see how drastically the disease had affected my eyes. He even brought one of the photos into the OR with him. In September 2012, Dr. Covici performed bilateral orbital decompression along with an ENT surgeon. We knew the risk of double vision was great due to the need to remove so much bone and fat from my orbit, but it was a risk I was comfortable taking and one that Dr. Covici approached with compassion and confidence. Fortunately, I woke up with single vision. The recovery process was quite extensive, but I immediately received compliments from people who could see that I had my "old eyes" back. My eyes no longer bulged, but my upper eyelids had stretched and retracted so much that I required an additional surgery to loosen and lower them. In July 2013, Dr. Covici performed a bilateral repair of upper eyelid retraction. Again, it was a medically necessary procedure performed in the hospital. The recovery was much easier and I am feeling great and definitely looking like my pre-Graves' self. Dr. Covici and his staff have been so wonderful. From accepting my frantic phone calls the morning of surgery to allowing me to text them photos of my bruises to make sure it was normal, and rearranging their own schedules to accommodate my busy life. Dr. Covici is the first physician I felt truly listened to me and understood that my concerns were not cosmetic but vital to returning me to my previous self. I would highly recommend Dr. Covici to anyone with Graves' disease, thyroid eye disease, Graves' ophthalmopathy, proptosis, or eyelid retraction. Even if your eyes have not changed, it's worthwhile to get some baseline tests and measurements so he knows exactly what he needs to do to return your eyes to their original state should anything change.

Dr. Johnson was very professional and kind and listened to my concerns, talked me through the procedure and what to expect. I initially saw her in May and scheduled the actual surgery for January when it would be colder and in between the Christmas and Easter holidays which are my busy times, and I'd have time to recoup and heal prior to the summertime. During the entire process and including post-surgery, all the staff including Carl at the front desk were always very courteous, helpful and responsive to my phone calls or emails. After surgery I had no complications and am healing nicely; minimal fluid for drain output, minimal swelling, and pain was not as bad as I had expected it might be. I was back at work (a desk job) 2 weeks post op, and, as a church musician (piano player) I missed two weekends but attended my first rehearsal at two and a half weeks post op and I was able to play again without issue, which I had been mildly worried about. Actually, I think the hardest part of the whole process was having to sleep in an elevated position and with support of your arms by your side to help the swelling, which as a lifetime side sleeper, made it hard to get as much rest as a would have liked. Although recovery is never fun, I would do this again as I feel like I have a new lease on life, knowing I will no longer have to hide myself and feel embarrassed about my arms. After all the hard work I put into losing weight, I finally feel much better in my own skin. I thank Dr. Johnson for her beautiful work that has impacted me so positively both physically and emotionally.

I'd like to start off with that fact that I don't do reviews. I just bite my tongue when things…read morearen't going correctly. I have had a skin/ body issue for 8 months. Been to multiple urgent cares because I don't have a primary care doctor. No one can diagnose me for some reason. No one sees what I see and feel. So I went to the best recommendation of dermatologist. Hillside on Silver street.. Now mind you this has been way over a month ago that I had my visit. But I cannot let go the experience I had there. My issue is I think I have mold toxicity from my wife and I researching when no one could tell me what's wrong. I have mold in my ears nose and all over my skin. But when they did their 2 second look over with no equipment and didn't see anything that's when the tables turned. Well maybe it's my meds. Or the meds I stopped taking. Or maybe it's from having cancer. I tried explaining that my wife has experienced similar symptoms because she obviously lives with me along with my cat who has very scary similarities. Now my cat is no longer with us. I feel it's whatever this is I'm dealing with. So they gave me some cream and said come back in 2 weeks. The cream was so dam expensive and I had to mix it with another expensive over the counter lotion. Which didn't work. Then my second visit was worse. They did a simple skin test and took samples to check. Came back in 3-4 minutes and said it's just lint. I said it could be mold or a parasite. Because they pop out of me like hairs and burn. And spread further throughout my body. So now they start telling me I need a psych evaluation....really? This is how you treat a patient that's been dealing with no sleep for 8 months due to this. My whole house and family is having this experience but I need my head checked??? So I was irritated at this point as you can understand. I just want to rid this and need help. So I said if you can't help just tell me now so I don't waste anymore of anyone's time. In return they said my wife was also experiencing stuff that is not there. I think they said basically her mind feels bad for the issues I have been dealing with so her mind is playing tricks on her too. Lmao. WTH??? So I walk out. Get locked out as I leave and now they got my wife in there after closing hours. Telling her I'm nuts and I need an evaluation and to get my head checked. 2 weeks later I get a letter from Hillside saying they are no longer treating me as a patient. As if I caused an issue and I'm not allowed back. Still dealing with whatever this is. Almost 10 months now. The reason I feel it's mild is because now I have bugs flying and crawling all over me. Like they are attracted to the mold/fungus on my skin as well as making homes in my ears nose and mouth. So I'm clueless as I feel like I'm dying a little more each day. I finally got myself out of Mass for over a week and now I'm in Florida trying to swim and sweat this out. Sometimes it feels like it's getting better. Then I have days like today where I don't even wanna get up. Showing eating swimming doing anything at all is an absolute torque chamber. I don't wanna shower anymore because I know what happens. Ear nose and throat clearly saw mold in my ears when I saw them because they gave me anti fungal cream and drops. But I think I need more complex treatment. I have even gone through 2 rounds of Doxycycline which is supposed to kill any type of parasite. Along with permethrin scream which does the same. But kills bugs. I went through 8 tubes of permethrin and nothing. That's not even close to normal am I wrong? So needless to say I couldn't let this go when these people drove me to flee the state because I feel nuts. And my wife and I know I'm not. Thankfully my wife has stayed by my side this entire time. Or I would not be here now. In the beginning for 2 months I had to prove to my own wife what I was experiencing. Until she started getting affected. My parents still don't believe me so I made a journal of everything that happens and I experienced. When I die from this. Guess how good Hillside dermatologist will look after my story goes viral. That was completely the most unprofessional experience I have ever had!! I hope NO ONE ever has to experience what I did. Because they might not be as mentally strong as I HAD to be. Mostly cuz I wanna figure this out before something bad happens to me. I'm worried one day I just won't wake up. The dishcharge from my ears would burn me and create new growth or something to that effect. Then my skin looked like road rash. Which I showed Hillside with many pictures yet I'm the crazy one. Till we meet again. Hopefully in court next time. Take with this experience as you will. I'm to the point I don't care who and who doesn't believe me anymore. Demos is in a new building and they are looking great and thriving. Gladys first helped me when I called with regards to parking. Demos has a sign outside their lot that all spaces are for Demos. Some spaces have outdated signs, Gladys told me, so I could park in any space as a patient. A sign did read to find on-street parking on the days they were full. There was construction on the main street outside their office the day I visited, so be mindful of the neighborhood. On one end, the entrance street to their location is one-way near the end but find a cross street to get back on. Demerys received my visit as a patient very courteously. I felt very comfortable after my short wait in the waiting room and the quick trip to my exam room. The walls were freshly painted, the clinic was well provisioned and neat, and Demerys helped me feel attended to by the practice as I was guided to my room and my appointment with P. A. Brandon Tibbens. I felt PA Tibbens to be a very humble man as his expertise in Dermatology left him very aware of how uncomfortable it can be to be living in one's skin and he refused to agitate that discomfort. Body politics touch our very skin's appearance and books have been written on this. I felt this in the background of quality of service at Demos which is why I returned. Brandon Tibbens made sure I wasn't treated like an object and that the health of me and my skin was the only subject of his attention which is the definition of medical professionalism to me. I hope I'm able to continue receiving an excellent quality of care for my skin at clinics like Demos Dermatology.
