I have found myself metroing to Silver Spring more and more versus driving nowadays... it's about a 20 min ride and on top of that I can avoid dealing with parking. There's quite a bit of construction going on in the area, which isn't surprising, though it can make navigation a bit confusing from the outside. A lot of elements of this metro seem upgraded compared to others, and it's definitely way larger than it was back in the day. There's a huge bus area, and you can even catch the MARC. The escalators, core of the station itself, and platform are pretty straightforward. I haven't been in the metro during the peak of rush hour, so I can't speak on what that experience is like. But I imagine it's no different than everywhere else. You can only catch the Red line here, so read the maps so you know where to catch the other lines if necessary. read more

This station is a bit of a mess currently. They are doing some kind of update to the station which limits the platform situation. This can be considered a benefit or a deterrent on how you look at it. If you are exiting a train, it's easy flow to the exit. If you are entering a train, you can only go so far down the platform safely before being in someone else's way. The escalator situation here confuses me. It seems like they were meant to be helpful in the platform situation but I always end up being in the opposite direction from where I need to be. Exiting out onto the street was a bit of a mess as well. Everyone seems to filter to the one side that takes you into the downtown area. Everyone seems to have the same thought here, I'm entitled to the nearest gate even though I see you clearly standing there about to use it. It is a very well used station and I can see why with the connection to the bus bays. But until they are done doing whatever update there is, it's just not the best right now. read more

There has always been construction on or around this station every time I have gone, and this makes it super confusing to me, I don't know how to come and go. Also, I have no clue what I'm doing with metro cards and such and I don't feel the instructions on the machines are the most helpful. Silver Spring metro is an easy enough station. You show up, ride the escalator, and you're on the platform. Some mornings it can get a little crowded and parts of the platform are pretty exposed so keep that in mind if it's a cold morning. I wish the station had more spots for bikes and scooters, a better place for dropping off passengers, and an easier way to connect to the bus terminal/transit center from the metro without having to exit. But overall, it fulfills its purpose just fine. read more

Took some years but they finally made this place into a transportation hub! Seems like they are expanding - they are currently doing some more construction in this area. This station has several options for buses (including Peter Pan and regular metro buses), MARC, and of course metro rail. I'm not gonna lie, it can be a bit confusing over here. I requested a lyft from here once and it was hard directing them where to pick me up. They are currently doing some more construction in this area. I generally stay away from the red line - often single tracking and other delays so I don't usually bother. Safe, efficient, and many people around to help answer any questions. There is a public restroom for only customers using the metro and it's very clean. The staff at the metro are extremely helpful, professional, and kind. Parking is wonderful as on the weekend it is free and we parked in the garage one day and on the road for 2 days at no cost to us. When we travel again to Baltimore, we will come to this location and us the metro from here. Thank you! read more

Under some major remodeling and engineering, Silver Spring is growing from a simple Metro and MARC station to include a huge bus stop too. It's not there yet though. In the meanwhile, the Metro station is above ground. At the ground floor are the automated ticket vending machines and a staffed ticket booth. An escalator takes you up to the platform level, which is an island between the two tracks. There are some windbreaks up there but on a cold and windy day like today, it wasn't so nice. Umm... where's the famed parking? I'd like to leave a car there all day and the spots I found with meters don't allow me to add enough time. read more

This is one of the larger outside of downtown DC metro stations. It is also adjacent to the MARC tracks. Signage was easy to follow and there were plenty of easy ways to find your bus in the bus bay or walk out to the street or any other adjoining street. It was clean and pleasant! read more

The Silver Spring Metro station was a small but important transfer point for the MD/DC region. Was. Past Tense. Now, the Metro & Ride on bus station has made it HUGE. This is a Rail and Bus sight where there are multiple areas where something can go wrong, yet they get it right. The over all facilities are clean. No trash. No graffiti. No "What is that smell!" smell. The station staff includes a maintenance and cleaning staff that stay active. I'm not talking about the safety officer watching the supervisor watching the ground guide watching the guy emptying the trash can. I'm talking about maintenance being conducted; trash being picked up; the station managers helping commuters! It is refreshing to see customer service done right. The escalators and elevator are being worked on periodically. If you must use the elevator, and the one at Silver Spring is unavailable,there are free shuttles to the next station. The information is posted on their website for the ease of the commuter. Any that complain about this station may have a limited experience with mass transit systems or really need to take a step back and see how lucky they are. read more

I have been coming through this station quite a bit over the last couple of months because I've had some physical therapy sessions nearby. I've transferred there utilizing the busses from DC to continue on my journey 20 minutes north. Today I was running late so I came in on the Metro Rail. It was somewhat cold and rainy and I noticed that the station itself is not enclosed, and the end was whipping through there. Most other times I've come in on a bus, and once I figure out where my next bus p picked-up at, I was smooth sailing. I like the fact that they have a Metro type store from where you can purchase farecards or add money to your card. Itnwoukd be the first store of it's type that I had seen at a Metro station. On certain days, they also have Metro personnel that are strategically stationed to help guide travelers. read more

terrible! none of the operaters know where any of the buses are located. literally cant find any good help at Silver Spring Metro station. it takes twice as long to leave the garage because of the amount of floors that need to be travelled along with bus traffic. extremely poor design and they should have left it alone. people are still doing what ive seen them all do in the 30yrs i have been in this area. that is to wait for the buses further down the street and not at the station. it was a terrible way of losing our tax money - to build something that took so long for absolutely no gain. pathetic. atleast the homelss have a new roof over their heads. read more

Ahh yes, Silver Spring Metro! My old stomping grounds! Even though it services only the red line, Silver Spring Metro serves as a major transport hub for the Ride On Bus, Metro Bus, as well as the MARC trains. If the red line is misbehaving, as it is wont to do, there are buses that will take you to downtown DC. Taking the bus in most cases is not as fast as taking the train, but it is only $1.25 for SmarTrip users and $1.35 for those who pay cash. The S2 and S4 stop at Metro Center and continue onto to Federal Triangle, and the 79 stops at the Archives. I haven't ridden the 70 bus, but it goes all the way the SW Waterfront and also stops in Chinatown. If you need to go to Frederick or Baltimore, you can take the MARC, which is $6 one-way (it only runs on weekdays, though). If you want to go to Bethesda from Silver Spring, the J2 and J3 will take you up there faster than riding the Metro. There are also shuttle buses to UMD and Montgomery College (Rockville campus). Many buses also go to other stations on the red line, such as Wheaton, Twinbrook, and Rockville. Although it is an above-ground station, trains tend to run frequently (except in the evening, where they run every 10-15 minutes). If there is single-tracking on the red line, usually they'll have the last stop be Silver Spring, and then have every other train going to Glenmont, which is only inconvenient for people who live in Forest Glen and beyond. In the morning, it is also hilarious to see people running to catch a train to Shady Grove and have it be standing room only. Those in the know (and now you do, too) usually wait 2 minutes, and then an empty train to Grosvenor pulls in, and we get have a nice seat all the way downtown. Nearby there are lots of tasty food options, including Oriental East for dim sum on the weekends, Sabroso Grill for delicious Peruvian chicken, steak at Ray's the Classics, as well as the crummy but good food at Tastee Diner, which is open 24 hours. Downtown Silver Spring and the Discovery Channel building are but a short walk away. There is also a Commuter Store if you need to buy a SmarTrip card or weekly bus pass for Metro bus or Ride On. The only downside to this station is that they are building a transit center, which won't be completed for a few years. While construction is going on, they have moved all the bus bays to Wayne Avenue, Dixion Avenue, and Bonifant Street, which is a short 5-10 minute trek. I can't tell you how many times I've hustled my ass from the station to catch the Z8, only to have it pull away as I'm waiting to cross the street, then I have to wait 20-30 minutes for another bus! There are also homeless people and occasionally the Church of Scientology will set up camp outside the entrance. To balance that out, the Girl Scouts sell their cookies here in the spring. P.S. To go to downtown Silver Spring, catch a bus or cab, exit at the South escalators. Going down the North exit will put you closer Metro Lost and Found, Tastee Diner, or the post office on Second Avenue. read more

Metro employees come in all shapes, sizes and attitudes. I've met some very nice metro employees however that was at every station expect for Silver Spring Metro stop! I'm not too sure why I only experience terrible Metro employees at this stop, maybe its just a terrible place to work? Two different situations that happened here - a few days ago I was trying to exit the station from the handicap exit because I had my bike with me, the terminal was down so I tried to exit though the smaller terminal. After I scanned my card and tried to walk through, the doors closed on my bike. I was waving for the station manager to come over and help me; when she finally arrived she said "You need to use the handicap exit, what were you thinking?" As you could imagine, that grinded my gears a bit. When I responded "The handicap terminal is broken, otherwise I would have used it" she just stared at me and I carried my bike over the door flaps and left. What a terrible customer service experience on Metros' part. The other terrible experience was on a cold night about a month ago, I was trying to get downtown. The trains were delayed for some reason; after waiting for 30 minutes on the platform I went down stairs to ask the station manager when the train would arrive and he said "I don't know". What was he there working for if he has no idea whats going on?? Not my favorite stop and I'm glad I'm moving soon. read more

I love the Silver Spring Station, even if the platform is as slippery your bathroom floor after a soapy romp. Sure it only has one line (Red) but the red line is truly a lifeline into the heart of DC. Eventually it will be incredible if they ever finish the depot it is suppose to become, but that seems like a generation away. read more

Escalators are almost always functioning! WOW! The platform is terribly windy, and the floor awfully slick when it rains/snows, etc. Would have gotten 4 stars but the ceiling leaks, and whenever it rains, I ALWAYS get dripped on when I walk in the station. It's also very difficult to find this station from the south side of the tracks if you're new in town. read more

All functioning escalators WOW! Walk sucks if you're walking from parking garage to station due to Marc train construction.

Decent Metro station, and walking distance from a variety of services, such as restaurants.

It certainly gets the job done. And there's usually adequate shelter.

These bus drivers get upset when they don't change the bus number and riders ask what bus is this. Yet again I miss my bus because a VERY SMART bus driver didn't change their number. Wtf... asshole. read more

It's not the most picturesque station. But then, most D.C. stations I've seen don't have the interesting and beautiful mosaics tiles and art we have in New York. But they make up for it in cleanliness. And this station is certainly clean, convenient to the huge bus depot next door, has working escalators, has staff that varies from being disinterested to genuinely helpful. You can even vend from the Smartrip vending machines without fear of homeless people hovering over you. We spotted a few outside but they seemed harmless and didn't bother people or beg for money. Best of all, this station is within walking distance to downtown, a hub of stores, office buildings and activity. So if you need your coffee fix BEFORE(D.C. forbids drinking and eating on their trains) you get to the station, there are numerous outlets including Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's a block away. Even the Best Bus Silver Spring stop, though not marked by any signs, is only 150 feet away. We came, we used, we liked. read more

Terrible layout and very aggressive, rude staff. New renovations created bus only lanes that have only ONE SIGN identifying that cars are not allowed and that sign cannot be seen from the right turn that you would take to get into the metro station. On top of that Google Maps guide you directly into the new bus lanes, so they can fine you $250 read more

What is up with the people who run Metro? What happened on Monday, Jan 4 that I had to stand out on the Silver Spring platform for over 20 minutes waiting for a *?!@#% train? It's close to freezing outside and half a dozen trains went by going the other direction when the whole world is going to work towards DC !!!! It's like the morons at stations who decide to keep the escalators running against rush hour but shut the rush hour ones off! In freezing weather, you cannot have people standing outside for more than 7 minutes. There is no excuse unless someone commits suicide on the tracks and even then, I know these trains can switch tracks. The incompetence and mismanagement have gone far enough! read more

This rating is mostly for the staff. Throughout my entire life living in the DC metro area I have never seen worse/more condescending/disrespectful staff in my life. Not even at L'Enfant or Gallery Place that have WAY higher traffic volumes. They should've been replaced a long time ago. They are too comfortable being rude. read more
