It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Akron but it's off the beaten path. All locals (except me) in here. When I went (10AM Friday) the place was almost full, and I was dining alone, so I sat at the counter, happily next to the kitchen. To look at the kitchen was like looking inside a bee hive, bustling with activity but barely a sound. I could just make out what was being calmly stated "2 Silver Dollar, Salmon, Country Fried, 2 Over Easy..." It was fun to watch, but what was important was the output. It took just over 6 minutes from the time I order until it was sitting in front of me, and everything was perfect! The waitresses were so efficient. I saw my order hit the window and in about 12 seconds it was delivered. They were so customer focused, they were (jokingly) fighting over refilling my tea. When I was done and paid for I waited outside for Uber to pick me up (3 min). I looked back on what I'd just experienced, and snapped a picture of the two parking lots of cars for Fred's Diner. I counted and there were 32 cars at Fred's. OK maybe 10 were staff so 22 cars for customers, let's say on average there were 2 customers per car (remember I walked here so no car for me). By my calculation, Fred's was feeding 44 people every 30 minutes or so. No wonder they're only open 4 days a week and only for breakfast - lunch. I calculate they might serve 3200 meals in those 4 days, and then take 3 days off to get ready for the next week. I love this place. Wish I lived here so I could come more often.

I ended up getting some tomato bisque soup which I'm an absolute sucker for and it was fan freaking tastic. A+++ Definitely it's comfort food season and this menu supported that. Now normally I make pot roast but I'm not very good at it and my pot roast is normally fatty but this pot roast came out absolutely fell apart on my fork. The carrots were perfect and the mashed potatoes was not lumpy my perfect consistency I told my wife if you want to learn how to make pot roast come cook here. She got the beef and mushroom pot pie now I'm a big fan of pot pie but I do not like mushrooms but she managed to absolutely inhale that and she gave it two thumbs up. We had an ample time for a nice little chat our server Alex was on the spot wasn't too present but wasn't gone too long for us to not notice. Service was also A+. We live in lake county and don't get down to Troy township at all but now I have an absolute reason and excuse to get down there and I will be bringing friends. Excellent place. Best in and out breakfast special I've had. Was plesently surprised by the service, atmosphere and food. The coffee was excellent right to the table and fresh. Whether looking to grab a cup of coffee with an old Army buddy or grabbing breakfast with the family; I highly recommend skipping that corporate dinner and giving the Silver Skillet a try. Great place to eat breakfast if you like a hometown diner- like restaurant. Food is great and prices are reasonable. This is a family owned and operated business and the family recognizes repeat customers by name. This place is also open select evenings for dinner and the specials are really good, like "mom used to make". It was hot when we got it. So it was fresh. Just took forever. I also got a cup of soup with my paprikash so I chose the mushroom barley. It was very thick, almost stew like. Lots of barley but not too many mushrooms. It was ok. Wouldn't get it again. The paprikash was ok. It's a ok portion. Not heaping. Ok though. It tasted ok too. Not too much distinct flavor. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't get it again. Mom's chicken salad on wheat was just ok too. For the more than hour we waited to get our food, this was not a great experience. When we went to pay the hostess cashier was MIA and we waited. We were going to pay via cc but decided we did not want to wait any longer and just gave cash. I couldn't even flag someone down to tell them I left the bill by the register. No one there. Not sure if help was the issue. Probably was. Too many customers and not enough wait staff. Or just on their own time. Server seemed surprised we wanted to go boxes and our bill. But I got to get back to work and at this rate I was out of the office more than 1 hr 45 mins. Family place. Long time establishment. Good prices for a family. I don't want to knock. But this was a bit too far for me. I can't wait for my lunch for more than an hour. It may be awhile before I try again.

She very slowly handed out drinks to a table and asked if anyone in line was picking up an order--that answer was a resounding silence as it seemed everyone wanted to dine in. No more acknowledgement was given to the people in line. I noticed this place does not have real serve ware but only plastic takeout containers for DINE-IN...that seems super cheap, tacky and actually very wasteful for plastic one-use things. They didn't even invest in real cups as all waters and drinks were served in microplastic heavy styrofoam cups. We took this all in and stood in line for about 5 minutes before deciding this would definitely not be worth it for a 2hr wait. I'm happy for the people who are actually able to try the food here but as someone who does not want to wait hours for my piping hot food with a side of microplastics, I'm totally good.

This is easily one of my favorite places I've eaten while visiting Cleveland. I ordered the steak breakfast bowl, and let me tell you--do yourself a favor and order it!
