We arranged our trip via Groupon and were nervous about the hotels we would be placed in - expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. We were pleasantly surprised with Silken St. Gervasi Hotel in Barcelona. The front desk associates were friendly and helpful providing us with a map, directions, and pointing us to the metro just around the corner behind the hotel. The room included two small twin beds pushed together, which is standard for the region. We visited in December and even though it was in the 60's, the heat was cranked and we had no control over the temperature in our room. Fortunately, we were able to open our windows and still get a good night's sleep due to the relatively quiet neighborhood. The room had a mini-fridge and there is a market right around the corner to pick up snacks and drinks so don't pay inflated prices for what the hotel puts in there. There was also free wifi. It didn't work spectacularly, but that is also standard for hotels in the region. We had a hair dryer and a bidet, but I was surprised to learn that wash cloths aren't a thing in much of western Europe. Another general observation about hotels in western Europe is they have no curtains or means for containing shower water and you can't help leaving a sizable puddle on the bathroom floor. The free breakfast at Silken St. Gervasi was one of the more generous we had in any of our hotels and included bread, pastries, cheeses, meats, cereal, fruit, and among other options. A cab ride to/from the airport is about 30 euro. read more
