Sarah is incredible!! I was a little concerned about having someone tailor my wedding dress. It was quite large since I got it secondhand and there was a whole lot of delicate tulle on the top. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job. She was a sheer delight to work with and the dress fit like a glove. Fantastic experience getting a Brides for a Cause sample wedding gown altered here! Jana was thorough and professional and very nice about letting me try on pieces of the jewelry they carry to find the look that was right for my gown. Had the most bizarre interaction with this business. I booked my first appointment online, which was labeled only as "first alteration fitting", and I assumed to be a consultation. There was a $20 fee to hold the appointment, which isn't typical for other bridal alteration places I've booked with, but I figured, why not? The instructions online did ask to me to email a picture of my dress and an idea of what I wanted done, so I did. I heard back from Julia within two days confirming my appointment. She also asked about setting up my second appointment and pickup to which I thought..hmm...is this a bait and switch? But I also thought that she might just be super organized, and given the shop's 6 hours notification requirement for cancellations, I thought she might just be planning ahead in case we do work together. I confirm my second and third appointment times and think I'm all set. Up until this point, I hadn't been given an estimate of how much the work would cost, or any indication that I had committed to working with Julia on my dress. I had merely made an online appointment. I show up at my appointment time and am given no instructions as to what's expected; I'm just told to change into my dress. I do, and Julia gets to pinning my dress and talking through what will be done. She takes an hour to pin my dress. Seems like quite a bit for a consult, but then again, I've never had a wedding dress altered before, so what do I know? I don't have a quote yet; we're just working through options and I'm thinking this woman is very meticulous in her work and I appreciate her. Cut to the end of the appointment- she takes my dress and works up the cost- $590. My dress is lace, but otherwise fairly simple- just two layers with some tucking here and there; one small addition. I mention that I'm still working through consults, and would it work with her timeline if I get back to her early next week? At that point it becomes apparent we're not on the same page. Julia gets super offended, and says that she'll then just charge me $50 for the consult. I feel bad for the misunderstanding, but hold my ground as I had agreed to pay $20. It's the businesses' responsibility to properly communicate their policies to me. It's not mine to infer them. We settle on $25. She goes on some guilt trip about her hoping I like my next tailor, having to go pump milk, and feeling disrespected. Well, I felt cheated and had also just wasted paid time off, but I didn't voice this because I don't expect other people to carry my emotions. My recommendations to this business would be to be more clear about the policies on their site and in their appointment confirmations, be more upfront with their costs, and check their attitude. read more

Julia altered my wedding dress and it turned out great! I loved that I could set up the appointment online, and Julia was quick to reply to give me an estimate by email after I showed her a picture of my dress and what I knew already to be wrong with the fit. My dress only took one round of alterations, and the total was only $175. I have heard of much pricer alteration bills, but I know my wedding dress wasn't super involved in terms of wedding dresses. Julia even made a great suggestion for altering my hem, and I loved the result. I wouldn't have thought to do it the way she did. read more

My favorite sweater got a hole in one of the elbows, which I put off fixing until it was quite a doozy. I stopped in to ask what my options were, as I've literally never had anything repaired or tailored before so I wasn't sure if the hole could still be darned or if more drastic measures had to be taken. The women who I spoke with were super nice and reassuring. I would have left my garment there during that visit, but it turned out that my initial thought (elbow patches would have to be added) was correct, so I opted to bring it back after finding a patch fabric that I liked. When I returned to drop off my sweater, I again received super nice service. The entire total, for the patches and darning a different hole, was a whopping $25. (I have no idea what industry standards are for these services, but as a pretty frugal person I felt it was very reasonable.) After my first two interactions, and learning that minor alterations were actually very affordable, I was so excited to do business here that I started thinking of all the other clothing items I could bring in. I was ready to become one of those people who has a tailor. I picked up my item today, and the elbow patches look pretty good - although they are cut a bit unevenly in some places. Not sure that this is super noticeable at a casual glance, so I really don't mind. However, what I did notice is that my previously soft, smooth knit was pilling - making it look more worn than it had when I brought in to be fixed! That, coupled with the not-my-laundry-detergent-smell told me that it had been washed while in the possession of Silhouette. I have no idea if this is a standard practice (I got the opposite impression, which is why I brought it in laundered) but I REALLY wish that it would have been communicated to me when I dropped my item off. I do not have the luxury of buying new clothing ever, and rarely get to buy new-to-me clothing, so I am very meticulous about how I wash my clothing - in order to prevent exactly this sort of thing from happening and extending the life of my clothing as long as possible. I also seriously wonder why an alterations shop can't wash clothing without damaging it, especially considering one of the shop girls was literally discussing best washing practices with another customer in the shop when I came to pick up my item. I also noticed what appeared to be several fresh droplets of ink (they smeared when touched). Fortunately, I don't imagine they will leave noticeable stains on this particular fabric, but how careless do you have to be to get ink (or whatever it is) on clothing that you've been paid to mend? Yikes. I really wanted to LOVE this tailor but right now I'm just feeling validated in my general wariness of letting other people handle my clothing. read more

So happy to have found Silhouette! I moved here about 6 months ago and had a tailor I loved, trusted and had a great relationship with. Silhouette was right down the street, and while initially I thought they only did bridal alterations, I was happy to find out they could alter other garments as well. I'm petite and find most off-the-rack clothing to be too long in the arms and legs, and everything falls off my shoulders, so having a great fit is important to avoid looking like a schlumpy potato sack. I liked that you can make an appointment where you have devoted time with one of the seamstresses to get fitted. All of my clothing was altered within a reasonable time and was done beautifully. I came in because it seemed it was always after hours that I was walking past this shop. Usually after a few drinks late at night and I am just taking my time walking home and peering through windows like the creep that I am. This store has the cutest jewelery! And when I went it I found even more cute things! The downside is that I felt most of the sizes and styles in clothes were meant for petite women. I brought in a delicate, full length sequined dress that needed to be altered for an important upcoming event. I worked with Jana. She was great! Very friendly and efficient. I'd never had anything professionally altered before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but their website provides a lot of helpful information (for example, bring the shoes and undergarments that you'll be wearing with the dress!). I felt a little self-conscious about being plus size and having to get measured by professionals, but it was totally no big deal and it was all so easy and quick. I'm pretty sure they've worked with all kinds of bodies; it's what they do. She had me try on the dress and she did some pinning to shorten the hem and bring in the waist. She ended up having my garment ready a week before the deadline! It looks and feels great. I am totally happy. Plus size ladies, don't be scared! I had a consultation here but did not have alterations done. This review is for professionalism and consultation not quality of work done. I scheduled an appointment for a bridal consultation to have a dress altered. I appreciated the online booking system. Upon arriving to the very cozy space 1-2 minutes before my appt start time, I was not greeted (though Julia was 4 feet from me with another customer and could have easily taken 30 sec to say hello, I'll be with you asap). A few minutes another woman took my dress and told me to wait. 15 min after my appt start time I was told to get into my dress and Julia took me to the mirror. She still did not introduce herself which I felt like was unprofessional and awkward. She pinned my dress and said she would take it in at the back seam as the side beading would not line up if she did it there. While she pinned my dress she complained that the last bride had not come back to pay her and smirked she wouldn't alter the dress if she didn't pay (fair complaint- but shouldn't be said in front of other customers!). I was then told to redress and went to the counter with her where she didn't speak to me until she had a quote and alteration plan worked up: $550. The cost of the dress consultation was $25 for about 10 minutes of attention in the dress and 5 minutes after for a quote. I later had another consultation elsewhere (which was free!). They recommended that the side seams be taken in instead since the back was a "designer back" meaning it has specific beading patterns and though the sides would be potentially harder to take in and may not line up perfectly it would be a better fix and leave the dress more true to style. I agree with her, though she gave me the option to do either. I was quoted $350 for the same work (hem, fixing beading, and altering size). My main concern with Julia was her lack of professionalism and friendliness. Other considerations were cost of alterations, cost of consult, and I also wonder if she wanted to do the back of the dress instead of the sides because it was easier, not that it would be the best alteration. If it was friendlier, and more cost competitive I might have chosen to have alterations here. The other woman working seemed very nice, competent and personable (she's the one that first acknowledged me and took my dress). I'm not sure of here name. I've been looking for a quality taylor close to my neighborhood for some time. I stumbled upon Silhouette in some searches and figured I'd give them a try. I have an old police coat that is a personal favorite winter and riding coat but the old metal zipper finally died. This is a pretty epic job to tackle for any refined shop being such an industrial type sew job. They went for it and first attempt wasn't quite perfect so they let me use the jacket until their new industrial sewing machine arrived and then redid the work for free. Now they are a fully equipped shop for both detailed amazing fabric work as well as heavy duty gear! The pant I wear and need tailored regularly are waxed canvas so I'm going to take them there. I hope this is the beginning of a long fruitful relationship. Their prices are not cheap but they do quality work for a fair fee, support local business! read more

I found Silhouette on YELP last year when looking for a seamstress for my wedding dress, and I've been going to her ever since. I am super happy that I got in touch with Julia; she does a fantastic job and is really candid and appropriate when asked her opinion about a design. I not only had my wedding dress touched up, but I had multiple sari blouses altered for my fusion wedding. My future in-laws gave me MANY sari blouses within a month of the wedding, I didn't know which ones I was going to wear, and unfortunately none of them fit quite right. Despite the crunch for time, Julia was able to fit me into her schedule and help me out. And ALL the blouses fit like a glove! Since the wedding, I've stopped back at Silhouette to have multiple items of clothing altered to my size. Dresses, skirts, dress pants, you name it. Owner Julia Garey makes the majority of the clothes in the shop, and while she caters to women of all sizes, if you're petite, this is the place for you! Garey's designs are simple, beautifully made, fun, and just enough fashion-forward to have people swooning and asking, "WHERE did you get that?" Garey herself is bubbly, helpful, honest, and she works hard, making many of the clothes right there on site. If one of her creations needs to be taken in a bit, shortened a tad, or adjusted at all, she'll do the alterations, too, and has them ready in a few days. In fact, she told me she's thinking of offering tailoring services for all women's clothes -- a service that's badly needed in this part of town. The only issue you may have with the clothes is the price --- but remember: these are unique, handmade designs. The fabric was complicated, I was a basket case, and I was on a crazy wedding diet so my body was never the same from one fitting to the next. In short, it was not an easy process! Julia is incredible!! I took her my wedding dress, which was slightly used and slightly too big, and she did such an amazing job! My wedding dress was about 3 inches too long, and SO difficult to hem AND it was scalloped to make it even harder to hem. She literally cut my wedding dress with the EXACT same scalloped design to fit my height and then reattached that lace to the dress. So complicated, but I am so happy I chose someone who knew what they were doing! I could not even tell she had hemmed it at all! She fixed so many aspects of my dress: deeper sweetheart cut, fixed my zipper, replaced lost buttons, fixed the tulle that had ripped, and more!
