Among the many restaurants surrounding Boxhagener Platz is Sigiriya, a standout offering Sri Lankan food. Their menu explained the characteristics and ingredients typical of this hard-to-find cuisine and offered an approachable take for those unfamiliar with it. The thing to order from the menu is the "Reistafel," a set menu that came with an appetizer, an array of dishes for the main course, and a dessert. The appetizer was a simple salad of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and arugula dressed with pumpkin seeds and crushed papadum crackers for crunch. But the main attraction of the Reistafel were the five different items that came as part of the main course, each plated in a separate bowl: white rice, a coconut milk curry with fried eggplant, red lentils, a meat curry of choice (I had the lamb), and Pol Sambole (shredded coconut seasoned with chilies). Every item that came with the Reistafel was delicious and mildly spiced, though I was especially a fan of the red lentils for their creamy texture and the Pol Sambole (coconut sambar) for its earthy flavor. With all the dishes came a condiment made of fried red chilies in oil, which added an amazing aromatic, spicy crunch to every bite! At the end of the meal came a Sri Lankan dessert called Mikiri, a thick, tangy buffalo milk yogurt dressed with a syrup made of jaggery. Overall, the food at Sigiriya was beautifully presented and came with friendly service in an elegant atmosphere. Very nice Srilankiches dinner. We sat outside end March 2017 although it was only around 10c degrees, it was a nice atmosphere and quiet with pleasent street talks going on from the surrounding areas and adjecent kiosk. Car traffic noise was not an issue and the pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk was not intrusive at all. The seeting was benches with no backs - would have been nice to be able to lean back and relax. The service was very pleasent as well, and they were able to communicate in english. Even though we sat outside as the only couple, they never forgot about us, and it was easy to gain attention to the staff through the windows - not something you can take as an expectation nowadays so big plus from our side. Getting the drinks first and food after ordering was lightning fast with almost no wait time. The food was very good at a reasonable price. 2x diches and 2x 0,5l beer was 30,70 euro. In a word - Sri-lankan dishes, if you never tried it... Now is a good time! Longer version (for the brave) - I've passed by that restaurant several times and was always curious about the flavors of Sri Lanka. So a couple of friends gathered and we decided to give this place a try, we took a table outside and went through the menu. The dishes remind me a lot of the Indian cuisine, with lots of curry dishes and spices... But the seasoning is a bit different and the plates are a bit more diverse. The dishes are also a bit "lighter", which is good because you don't have to nap after it haha :) We started with Vadai -(vegetarian) a southern Indian specialty, my friend said the original are a bit fluffier but these ones taste great too. For the main dish I had a mung bean curry and chicken, both made differently and I asked to them to make it extra spicy, I handled it pretty well (and added extra sanbal) so beware if you're sensitive, some of the dishes are spicy from its core :) The plate was very aesthetic and the food was well seasoned and very delicious. Mung beans are a very unusual choice for me and I loved how they made it! In the middle of the plate there was a nice portion of rice and on the side some caramelized onion and a some salad - I loved everything about it. The food was presented so beautifully and with a smile! by our server that we were instantly in a good mood. I have come here several times for Indian and Sri Lankan food. OH IT WAS DELICIOUS. I took my Mom here, took a few dates here, took my old teacher here, took my aunt here... yes. I really enjoy it. It has yummy lassi, tons of vegetarian options, and the raita is to die for. The food has wonderful presentation and the wait staff is very helpful. They speak English and German, which was helpful for my family, as they don't speak German. If you are looking for an authentic mix of Thai (REAL THAI--i.e. just not with peanut sauce), Indian, and Sri Lankan food that has real spice (not just the hot kind), then I highly suggest this lovely place for gastronomic experience. Into it. So into it, you don't even know. So far I've been a huge fan of the food in Berlin, and it seems like I'm one of the few. It's true though; I love the food here. Sigiriya topped it all. The food + the service = a place I'll be visiting over and over again. We started off with #12, which was their version of a samosa. This was ok, but probably not something I would order again. In order to combat the bitterly cold onset of winter in October, we thought we'd go for some fiery Sri Lankan food. I have been to Sri Lanka and I must say that the food here bears little resemblance in terms of authenticity, to what you would find on that beautiful island. I would describe the offering at Sigiriya as a modified form of 'German Curry House' with the addition of some coconut. Excellent, welcoming service. The spiciness has been adjusted for the German palate, but you can add some additional chilli zing with the condiment on the table. We tried a mutton and a chicken curry. Both were well spiced but disappointingly the portions were frugal to the point of stinginess. There could not have been more than a few grams of meat on each place. But if you went there with a light appetite, I don't think you would be disappointed. Two people could eat a simple meal there with a couple of beers for around €30. A well-known Berlin food blog recently wrote that Sigiriya was the best Indian food in Berlin. I'm new here and haven't sampled the competition, but I sincerely hope I have not reached the apex! read more

The taste and texture of this restaurant's Sri Lankan dishes are very close to a modified "German version of southern indian food" with added coconut. The spices are very toned down. The portion of the curry were rather watery and lacking in substances. The complimentary papadams was way too salty, and it was measly 3 thin pieces for 3 people. If you are eating light and willing to pay €10-€12 euro for it then it is not too disappointing. For drink I ordered a water and for €3 i got a thin glass of still water that's about 4 cm tall. I really enjoyed this place. I was coming to an end of a two week stay in Europe and was tired of the same old same old on every menu (pork knuckles!) so this was a great change. They serve Sri Lankan food here and it was really tasty. I had a curry dish with rice and naan bread. There are so many different curries it can be hard to choose. I really enjoyed the food and it wasn't overpriced. Would definitely recommend a stop. read more

I really love this Sri Lankan / South Indian place (don't expect to find your normal vindaloo here) In the afternoon they have 3 dishes for a very good price (4 / 5 euro for a vegetarian main course, around 7 for something with meat / fish). In the normal menu starters are around 3 euro and main courses between 6 - 10 euro. Both well worth it. The fish and meat is very good and where possible everything they serve is biological, sustainable, and without hormones. Both the woman and the man who served us were great, and inside it's warm and cosy. The quality of the food is amazing, and it's something you won't find again soon. Try the salmon curry / red beet curry combination.... mmm! They also offer nice teas and wines btw... so all in all, try it! read more

Entree - Vadai mit salat; Vadai was quite dry, although the sauce had a decent amount of flavour. Main - Mutton saag Quite possibly the most tasteless curry I have ever been served... and for a "medium" spiced dish it had no heat at all. This is a fantastic Sri Lankan restaurant, and I enjoy this more than any curry/Indian place i've been to in the city. I've tried more than 5 dishes and they have all been phenomenal. This is my favorite find in Friedrichshain so far. Their dishes are definitely a step above what is normally served but still served with too much sauce and too bland which is typical of the Indian places in Berlin. I was initially put off by the seats outside due to the heavy footfall of people moving from simon-dach to boxi (and their slightly tacky green plastic flower holders), however based on other reviews I went inside the actual restaurant which comfortable and tastefully decorated. Food wise, it was also excellent - I had a beef curry served with 4 appes (a type of coconut/yeast/ricefloor pancake), with a side serving of pol cambole (coconut shavings mixed with tomato, lemonjuice, onions and chilli). The whole dish was very tasty, with the food being well spicied, but without being overpowering. As people have noted, it's a bit dearer than others in the area, but as far as I'm concerned the EUR8.90 i paid was money well spent and i'll be returning. read more
