The meal started off with a warm yogi tea, papadams and three dips followed by an entree of vegetable soup. The servings were quite generous for a starter and taste was pretty good - my sister thought the pepper in the papadam was a little overpowering, but I loved it!!! Main consisted of three dishes (Dahl, korma and palak panir) all of which were quite delicious... With this came a salad (not anything too special), basmati rice and crispy Indian naan bread. After the mains - and feeling very full, the waiter brought over a very refreshing bowl of fruit - mango strips and lychee... It was a nice sweet finish to a good meal! There was so much food!! More than enough for two people we ended up taking a goodie bag of leftovers home. And we received a complimentary mango shot when we asked for the bill. The Tandoori Duck. * * * We don't usually do Tandoori duck in the U.S., Although exceptions undoubtedly exist. Germany has the advantage of having excellent ducks Which we don't And having duck being very plentiful on the market. The contrast is that goat, which is common on American Indian-Pakistani menus, almost never shows up on such menus here. Here, you also get mutton. So Duck and Mutton are the two "dark meats" that substitute for goat in Berlin. * * * In a tandoori, Duck is absolutely positively amazing. Triple that if you are dealing with a superior duck with a nice lining of fat over the breast bone. * * * Add to that the fact that the tandoori I have had in Berlin has generally been superior no matter where I get it. The tandoori of my youth tended to be a dry affair with red color meat pure and simple. It was cooked enough to get hot. Otherwise it was nothing special - and it was dry to boot. This is not the tandoori of my youth. All of the tandoori I have been served here in Berlin has had outstanding sauces. The Berlin tandoori also has had vegetables tossed in with the meat. The veggies are cooked to al dente perfection and are bursting with flavor. Is this because Berlin tandoori is better than American tandoori? Or is this because tandoori cooking has gotten better than the grim dishes I used to eat thirty years ago? I don't have an answer to that question. * * * Either way, Put a perfect duck into a tandoori over. Add the perfect sauce. Add vegetables cut at the right size to al dente. You die and go to heaven. But mostly the thrills are the duck, the duck, the duck and then the duck. My wife's food was good, and the other Yelpers say the food is good. So you can't go wrong ordering whatever you like. They have happy hour on all weekdays where cocktails are 5€ which is a good deal. We didn't take advantage of the deal but might not be a bad call. Wir waren zu viert und hatten auch recht unterschiedlich bestellt, somit konnten wir super vergleichen. Alle Gerichte waren superlecker, der Knaller jedoch waren die Linsen. Die auf der Karte mit Peperonis markierten Gerichte haben diese Markierung nicht umsonst. Wer nicht wirklich scharfes Essen gewöhnt ist sollte es vielleicht eine Stufe niedriger versuchen oder dies bei der Bestellung erwähnen. Wir hatten einen sehr mäkligen Esser dabei, für den die Küche alle Wünsche umsetzte. Alles in allem ein gelungener Abend. What they call onion bhajis in this restaurant are poor, low-quality onion rings. Onion coated in a fatty batter. The spicy dishes like madras, jalfrezi and vindaloo are much the same degree of spiciness and flavour as each other... not very. I have always asked for authentic Indian vindaloo (so HOT), and I think that they just put an extra pinch of chilli powder in the sauce. Very disappointing. All very similar sauces. The chicken I believe (and I might be wrong), is mechanically-recovered chicken. It always has the strangest texture. Slightly slimy too..! Not a quality ingredient at all. Dishes are 'well padded out' with potato. What did it for us at our last (and very last) visit was when my partner ordered a glass of water instead of his usual beer. When the bill came we were horrified to see that we had been charged €4,40 for a glass of water. Not a bottle brought to the table, not a pretentious, fancy Italian brand.. just plain water 'mit'. There aren't many choices of authentic Indian restaurants in Germany, in fact, I haven't come across any but I do object to being ripped off with poor quality ingredients and obscenely over-priced water. As locals who live a short walk from Zaika and have recently visited the restaurant on a weekly basis, we won't be going again. The sneaky way of doing business. After I placed my order, I was asked if I'd like to try the naan bread. I said, "sure, why not?" I ordered the #56 Paneer Jhaifrezi as my main entree for 9€ and a linsensuppe (#20) for €2.50. Fair and reasonable prices, no complaints here. When I got the bill, they had slapped on a 3.50€ charge for the bread, without even mentioning that there's an extra charge for it. My fault for not asking as I'm learning, but I've been to many Indian restaurants in the area, and none have charged extra for naan. And if they are going to charge, it's sneaky to charge almost half the price of an entree, and more than a soup - just for bread. If they were transparent about the charge, I would have had absolutely no problem with this. I mentioned to the waiter that I wasn't aware that I'd be charged so much for just naan. He said, "Sorry, that's what we charge." No problem, but I probably won't be back here.

One of the strangest most globalized meals I have ever had…read more Salt and Pepper claims to be an Indian Mexican place. It is by no stretch of the imagination Indian Mexican fusion. There is no attempt to combine Indian food ideas and Mexican food ideas to come up with anything unusual or distinctive. It is a restaurant that serves Indian items (75% of the menu) and Mexican items (20% of the menu). They also have burgers and steaks if you insist. * * * I had Texas-style chips and dip and Tandoori chicken in a cashew sauce. The Tandoori chicken was served with an English salad with salad cream. The salad was NOT a German dish. Salad cream is strictly British. My beverage was mango schnapps. Mango schnapps IS German. So I was having Mexican and Indian and English and German all at the same time. * * * Tangent - Schnapps Schnapps have virtually disappeared from Berlin bars and restaurants - except for a very small number of dedicated German food places. I had come to Berlin hoping to drink all different sorts of schnapps - a dream which simply isn't going to happen. No-German is a Berlin thing. Much of the rest of Germany has German food and German beverages. One food writer hypothesizes Berlin's massive commitment to international food is the result of Berlin being an international city controlled by four foreign powers for over forty years. There was American Berlin and English Berlin and French Berlin and Russian Berlin. Some of this is the generalized globalization that is affecting all of the capital cities of Europe. I have had Francophiles complain that Paris is now the least French city in France. For whatever reason, German food and beverage are now hard to find in Berlin. Note that the scarcity does NOT apply to German beer. Berliners may be international - but they are NOT stupid. That said, The irony of having my one mango schnapps in an Indian restaurant was not lost on me. * * * How was the food? Interesting and savable. Salt and Pepper uses vast amounts of standard industrialized ingredients. German Supermarkets sell mass produced Mexican food items to German customers. Indian supermarkets have vast numbers of bottled sauces. There is a large Indian supermarket one street over from Salt and Pepper that sells much the same food that Indian supermarkets sell in the United States. There are also the wholesalers who provide groceries to the enormous number of Indian restaurants in Berlin. Supermarket sauces made the meal. My tortilla chips for the chips and dip were German Engineered. There were virtually identical circles of masa chips - each of the same circumference and thickness. They looked just like Pringles. They didn't taste like much. They were served with mild salsa straight out of the bottle. I could have bought that salsa at the supermarket near my apartment. There was also bland guacamole - also supermarket, and a sour cream that was tame even by German standards. Entertainingly, the sauces were not served in Mexican style sauce dishes but were served in the microscopic sauce dishes used in Indian restaurants for the accompaniments to pappadams. Strangely, the microscopic servings of dips actually worked. The bowls were so small you couldn't get very much salsa on your chip unless you broke the chip in half. The micro-doses of sauce on half chips surprisingly did the job. The sauces in the pappadam bowls were okay and lasted the whole meal. The tandoori chicken with cashew sauce was a major bore. The kitchen, probably fully aware of its sins, also provided a tamarind sauce, a raita and a green chili sauce. The bottled tamarind sauce and raita were passable for what they were. The green chili sauce was an absolute world beater. The green chili sauce - which could have been pure pulverized green chilies with just enough liquid to make them a sauce - was also major fire coming out of the ears material. It threw all sorts of life into the cashew chicken. It also made the guacamole, the sour cream, the mild salsa, the raita and the tamarind sauce absolute necessities. I went through every molecule of all five sauces and still had half of the green chili sauce left in my bowl. And I went through all of my rice. And I went through a salty lassi. * * * Frankly however, this was all good eating, But, a repeat visit is not in the cards But I had a good time and had an entertaining meal. Should you make Salt and Pepper one of your destination eating locations on your next visit to Berlin? Probably not. But a lot of people do eat here. And if you ended up here because the people you were with insisted this is where they wanted to go You could find something that would be okay. Like maybe a glass of mango schnapps.

Their menu explained the characteristics and ingredients typical of this hard-to-find cuisine and offered an approachable take for those unfamiliar with it. The thing to order from the menu is the "Reistafel," a set menu that came with an appetizer, an array of dishes for the main course, and a dessert. The appetizer was a simple salad of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and arugula dressed with pumpkin seeds and crushed papadum crackers for crunch. But the main attraction of the Reistafel were the five different items that came as part of the main course, each plated in a separate bowl: white rice, a coconut milk curry with fried eggplant, red lentils, a meat curry of choice (I had the lamb), and Pol Sambole (shredded coconut seasoned with chilies). Every item that came with the Reistafel was delicious and mildly spiced, though I was especially a fan of the red lentils for their creamy texture and the Pol Sambole (coconut sambar) for its earthy flavor. With all the dishes came a condiment made of fried red chilies in oil, which added an amazing aromatic, spicy crunch to every bite! At the end of the meal came a Sri Lankan dessert called Mikiri, a thick, tangy buffalo milk yogurt dressed with a syrup made of jaggery. Overall, the food at Sigiriya was beautifully presented and came with friendly service in an elegant atmosphere. Though the flavors/spices of the dishes seemed to be toned down, the menu here presented a great, approachable introduction to Sri Lankan cuisine!
