Restaurant Phoenicia is a place of contrasts. On the inside is a high-end, classy dining room…read morefeaturing white tablecloths and live music. And on the outside are a bunch of tables occupied by hookah smokers. But the one feature common throughout the restaurant were the delicious plates of Lebanese food going to all the different tables. My favorite part of any Lebanese meal are the mezze dishes. Forget the kebabs and mains--I prefer making a meal just out of these delicious dips and starters! So it was perfect that Phoenicia offered two different mezze mix plates--one with 8 cold mezzes, one with 8 warm mezzes. On the cold plate came tabbouleh (parsley salad), waraq enab (rice wrapped in grape leaves), hummus, muhammara, makdous (eggplant cured in oil), moussaka (eggplant cooked with tomato), hindbeh (cooked dandelion greens) topped with fried onions, and pickled cucumbers/radishes. The warm plate came with fattoush salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, radishes, peppers, pita chips), makanek (Lebanese sausages), jawaneh dajaj (chicken wings), toum (creamy garlic spread), falafels with tahini, and three different kinds of filled pastries (sambousek): ground lamb, spinach, and my favorite, two feta cheese rolls. Every item on both of the mezze plates was fresh and delicious, and the dips went especially nicely with the rounds of freshly-baked pita bread that came on the side!

R. Baron v. Haers.

I don't know how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars; if I could give it 6, I would…read more First: the food is absolutely delightful. There are tons of options, including many vegetarian ones, and I have yet to try a dish that wasn't beautifully made, with balanced, light flavors. There are lots of beans, lentils, vegetables, yogurt-based sauces, olives, cheeses, stews, bread, tea, three or four variety of starchs--rice, couscous, bulgur, etc-, burek, fried stuff, baked stuff, boiled stuff.... Sometimes, if I need to eat one meal in a day, I'll go here. Second: the people that work here come from various places--Turkey, Lebanon, Germany, Cuba...ALL of them (that I've met) are friendly, generous, and welcoming (and patient as I point at the different foods to pile my plate with!). The atmosphere of the restaurant is awesome: a clean, simple yet warm vibe, classical music playing, and a back room where you can look onto the back yard. Third: you are getting ALL of this for either 7 or 9 Euro. I come from NYC, where one can easily--and in fact often does--pay twice that amount for food half as good. SUPPORT places like this, that offer lovingly made, healthy, delicious food for good prices....this is my favorite restaurant BY FAR in the neighborhood, and there are many other good ones here. I've brought about 4 friends here and all of them have been blown away...one even told me the next day, "dude, I can't stop thinking about that restaurant!".

I was quite amazed at how much food could fit on one plate! The service was amazing & such heart-felt. I would recommend this place to anyone! Although bear in mind there is not a whole lot of space to sit.

You order and pay at the counter and they give you a beeper so you know when the food is ready. When it goes off, you go back up to the counter to get your food, condiments, etc. there's ample seating indoors with a few tables outside as well. I got the koshary, my husband got a falafel sandwich, and we split sakalans for dessert. There was also a big bowl of a hot sauce/spicy condiment near the water station by the counter and, of course, I had to try it. The wait for our food wasn't long at all, but it seemed we had just beat the rush. The koshary here is the best I've ever had! It wasn't lacking in anything and it came out hot! The sauce was plentiful and the flavor warm and inviting. The chickpeas were perfect cooked and the fried onions were super crispy and tasty, not at all bitter! The hot sauce was actually spicy, but also went really well the koshary in terms of flavor. My husband's sandwich was loaded and he really enjoyed it. He had gotten it wrapped to go in anticipation of not finishing it, but he claimed it was so good he couldn't stop. The sakalans was nothing like I've ever had before, but now I crave it so much! I highly recommend it even if you're skeptical! This was a wonderful meal and we hope to return to it one day!
