Very delightful hostess and wait staff at Lhila conveniently located informal place served us some delicious south Indian delights. It's really a mix of several Indian cuisines and don't get misled my the name, they have a fairly extensive selection. The do's (1) Please try their vadas (deep fried lentil donuts) as they are fresh and crispy (2) the coconut chutney was really well done (3) yellow lentils are a good preparation as well. Note that entrees are served with rice and salad. (4) one of the mixed vegetable entree had a distinct flavor of some left over fish based preparation - perhaps the same pan was used (we were told that was not the case). Location wise i believe this restaurant is close to downtown area of berlin, and also easily accessible via train and bus. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating opportunities. The menu is a mix of srilankan, tamil and indian. I was craving kotu that day, therefore i ordered the coli kotu. Coli kotu is basically chicken breast cut up into pieces and mixed into kotu. I came in around 1 pm on a Wednesday and no one was available to help - it seemed like there was only one waitstaff. The restaurant was mostly empty with only one large table in the back and 2 tables outside occupied. There was no English menu. I wanted to order a chai tea but my translating app didn't find one on the menu. I ended up trying the sweet lassi, which was not as tart as I expected it, but light and pleasant. I've never tried a dosa before (here, it's call dosia) and I loved the masala dosia I ordered! The shell was like a well-done crêpe, crispy and light without breaking apart too easily. I tried the dosa by itself at first and it was dry, but the curry on the side helps balance it out and improve the flavor. I also ordered the saag paneer (called kyrei cheese karri), which came with basmati rice and a side salad. It was a good amount of food but the curry was unexpectedly sour. All in all, I would recommend this restaurant - order the masala dosia and a sweet lassi to go with it. read more

Loved this place, I ordered take out and got the lamb masala. Absolutely delicious. The inside is quite lovely, I imagine it would be a wonderful intimate setting for a couple or small group. They brought me delicious chai tea with milk and honey while I waited, extra points for that! This is only the second Indian place I've ever been to that does that. I was yelping through all kinda indian restaurant in Berlin to find a new one to try this Sunday. As I never really tried south Indian / Tamilian dishes we decided to check ammAmma out . As reading about the interior not being that special I was not surprised entering the restaurant however the very kind and welcoming waiter automatically made us feel happy and excited about our evening ahead of us. We ordered some drinks and decided to share a mix of different starters . The waiter was really good regarding allergies and my special vegan and GF request. In the end we had the Paruppu lentil soup, a mix vege fried platter and the Bonda fired potato balls . As my main I ordered the Kyrei Tofu Karri which was absolutely divine, its like the Indian saag paneer just an amazing vegan alternative with the tofu option win win for myself as I just to love the paneer cheese one during my non vegan days. My mum ordered the Masala Dosai which could have been easily shared between two as we did not expect this size. My dad and brother went for non veggie/vegan choices the vaththu Jaffna karri and mutton chilli and both said it was extremely tasty, full of flavor and perfectly cooked. If I would live in the area I defo would have found my new fave Indian take away by tonight, well one never know incase I move back this could influence my house hunting! Had lunch special of a mango curry with chunks of fresh mango, and was fantastic. I was told this beforehand, and I can confirm that it does take a bit of time to get the food, but enough to let you know they are actually cooking the food a bit and not just having a single premise sauce in the back which they just add things to to make a "new" dish. It didn't take too long, and lunch came with a soup which was creamy, simple and delicious (I think it was a pumpkin cream soup). The service was very friendly, and the prices were cheap! Nope. Doesn't cut it. I LOVE me some dosa but this isn't it. I've had better out of a freezer box. I feel terrible for writing this because the staff were lovely so they get an extra point for that. It is a tiny restaurant but it I love it! Most main dishes come with all the rice you can eat and a yummy salad. The staff is incredibly nice and the food is delicious.I had a wonderful curry and I want to come back! The only issue I have with it is that because it is sooo small, you sit either sit on a stool or a bench. The stools are not very comfortable and if you have to sit next to the door like I did, then it can get really annoying as people keep coming and going. The mango liquor they give you at the end of the meal is really good! If you can, make a reservation but it's not always needed. read more
