The water isn't very deep, and life jackets are provided, so there's nothing to worry about. You can also bring your own drinks or beer, which is a nice bonus. There are a few areas with faster-moving water, so if you don't have much paddling experience, you may spin around or get stuck on the rocks like I did. However, you can easily get out and push yourself free. The final section gets a little rougher, but it's still nothing to be concerned about--just be prepared to get wet! Overall, it was a great experience. I'll definitely do it again next year, and this time I'll be better prepared!

We parked, checked in, and waited for the shuttle bus to take us to the starting point in Tahoe City. A 5 minute speech about the rules and what ifs was endured. On to the raft. These are sturdy rafts that can easily accommodate 6 or 7 people. They charge by the person not by the raft so you can take 2 rafts for more space. The river is flowing high so there were minimal protruding rocks and trees. The "rapids" at the end were pretty tame as well. We brought super soakers and had a few water fights with other boats and picnicking people. This has become an expensive outing.

Truckee River Rafting was super easy to work with. Great staff + good equipment. We were able to adjust our group size up to the day of the reservation. 10/10 one of my favorite experiences in Tahoe :D They permit soft coolers, speakers, inflatables, and beverages/snacks (no glass or styrofoam) on the raft! On the day of, they assigned us two 6-person rafts for our group of 11. After we were equipped with life jackets and oars, they snapped a souvenir picture and sent us off. We were fortunately at the tail end of the rafting season, so the river was calm, and any rapids were mild, in the clearest water you could imagine. We were far from the only ones floating down the river, but there were several stretches where it was so peaceful it felt like we were on the water alone. It was never crowded, even at the swimming areas. I think the last weekend of August was the best time to come, when families and students are mostly back in school but the weather is still warm and the water is just right. At the end of the river, we were welcomed by enthusiastic staff at the dock who collected our raft and gear, and directed us to the shuttle stop where we took a quick bus ride back to the start. The whole process was very smooth. Even floating at a leisurely pace, this takes about 3.5 hours-- but if you stop at the beaches or calmer areas to swim, you could definitely make it an all-day thing. Though just be mindful that the last shuttle back is at 5pm.

My sister, nephew and I wanted to do Middle Fork this year and I remember it being an adrenaline rush and challenging but so fun- We picked a Tuesday so it was not crowded, but when it ended up being just the three of us in the raft with Juli, I was a little nervous, remembering how intimidating tunnel chute was- and I didn't have the security of a full raft of people to weigh down the raft and help paddle to build up speed. This just goes to show you how important a seasoned veteran rafting guide is Juli was amazing. He gave clear instructions, he was very calm, and he managed the raft like a pro. No no flipping over and no one fell out. So exciting! Now I want to go to Costa Rica and look up Whitewater excitement there and request Juli. Hope to do this at least one more time this year. If I lived closer, I would go more often. Ps- I read some people complaining that you have to pitch in to carry the raft from the water up to the trucks and from the trucks down to the water, I've only been with one company that did not ask you to do that. All the rest have always had the rafters help out in pitch-in.
