The kids had a great time feeding and petting the animals and riding the horses. It was such a peaceful getaway and Pam the host was so charming and helpful. The nearby towns of Penn Valley and Nevada city were higher end then a lot of the other western towns I had been to around California and had some great dining options. We were able to visit the mining museum and stop over in Tahoe to see some snow for the kids. The estate also had a great hot tub and we were able to bbq steaks at night and there was plenty of outdoor space for dining. We had a great restful time and it was a great weekend getaway. Pam even made us home made breakfast and dinner which was also delightful! Highly recommend!

(VRBO is a pain the &$%#, book through her site or direct contact)…read more I booked a weekend at Vaquera Ranch, I'll never forget it. I searched and searched for the perfect place and this was it. I was traveling with family and friends, including two energetic 7 year old girls who are nuts for animals (with the attention span of a gnat). Pam's place is majestic, a quick hour to skiing, hiking, etc. At first we felt we were MILES into the sticks but once we got our bearings it was a very quick 10-minute drive out to the store. We didn't cook much but if we had to there were pots and pans, a nice-sized cuisinart hot plate (everything there is top of the line!!), a Kuerig coffee pot with biodegradable pods (which we appreciated). The wine fridge was enough to keep some groceries if you wanted. And by groceries, I stored beer in there. The kids loved movie night on the big screen TV, doing crafts around the beautiful kitchen table, and of course going down to see the horses. The large tub, we couldnt get them out of it...which was absolutely perfect, they were filthy at the end of each day! We enjoyed the massive show the sky gave us come night time! Stars galore! Pam was over the top generous with her time. Memories of the ranch and the space Pam has created for her furry, four-legged family will live warmly in our hearts until we return.

My granddaughter and I chose the two-hour trail ride around Folsom Lake, and it exceeded every expectation. I've owned horses and have ridden extensively, so we came with experience and simply wanted to enjoy a beautiful morning ride together. Our guide, Will, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, personable, safety-conscious, and made the entire experience relaxing and enjoyable. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does and cares about both the horses and his guests. The horses were well-mannered, the scenery around Folsom Lake was breathtaking, and the pace was perfect for taking it all in. The best part? The smile never left my granddaughter's face all day. Those are the kinds of memories that last a lifetime. Thank you, Will, for making our ride so special. We highly recommend Boarding on the Lake and can't wait to come back!

I always wanted to do horseback riding in Tahoe! Finally, was able to today. I called ahead the day…read morebefore and was booked for the next day. There's plenty of parking available and in the office is where you'll sign some paperwork and pay. It was $60 for an hour ride. You're allowed to bring your phone and a Fanny pack. I was placed with a group, so we were a total of 5, including the guide. I know for next time to book for the two hour session. There's a bit of uphill and downhill on the trail. The trail is pretty worn in and I felt so comfortable on the horse I was on. I got placed with the horse named Blue. Genuinely loved the experience and found it so calming. I'd love to do it again whenever I'm in Tahoe again.

I wish I had listened to the negative reviews before booking. Unfortunately, our experience matched…read moremany of the concerns other people have shared. From the moment we arrived, the staff seemed disorganized and unprepared. We were surprised to learn they only accepted cash or personal checks, despite our group asking multiple questions when making the reservation and even calling again the day of our ride to confirm everything. At no point was this ever mentioned, which left our group scrambling before the ride even began. What bothered me most was the lack of concern for rider comfort and safety. Before the ride started, we specifically explained that one member of our group had previously had a traumatic horseback riding experience and was very nervous. Instead of taking that into consideration, they placed her on a horse they described as "lazy and bucks when behind" and positioned her at the very back of the group. It immediately made her feel unsafe. During the ride, she became overwhelmed and asked if she could get off her horse. We were told they do not allow anyone to dismount during the ride or switch horses under any circumstances. It was concerning that there appeared to be no plan or flexibility if a rider was genuinely distressed. A guide should prioritize safety and be prepared to handle situations like this. The staff came across as rushed, unfriendly, and more focused on getting our group finished so they could move on to the next reservation. The overall atmosphere felt like a money grab rather than an enjoyable experience, and customer service was lacking from beginning to end. We booked this as part of a bachelorette weekend and were hoping for a fun, memorable experience. Instead, it ended up being one of the biggest disappointments of the trip. I would absolutely not recommend this as a bachelorette activity, especially if your group includes beginner or nervous riders. There are much better businesses that value customer experience and make safety a priority. The scenery was beautiful, but unfortunately the service and overall experience overshadowed it. I would not return.

Shadow Glen Riding Stables was hands down the best field trip we have been on in years!…read moreAs a 3rd-grade teacher, I cannot say enough good things about Terry and the wranglers. They were welcoming, patient, knowledgeable, and made every student feel included. Our students had an incredible opportunity to learn about ranch and farm life, tractors, horses, foals, farm animals, hay, and the daily responsibilities of caring for a ranch. The hands-on experiences were the highlight of the day. Students were able to groom horses, interact with animals, ask questions, and gain a real appreciation for agriculture and animal care. Terry and his team kept the students engaged from beginning to end. What made this experience even more special was Terry Howard's generosity. Shadow Glen donated approximately three hours of their time at no charge to educate three classes of Center Joint Unified School District students. That level of community support is truly appreciated. Our students are still talking about the trip, and the adults had just as much fun as the kids. It was an outstanding experience from start to finish.

I have trained all my life and said I would be happy to help. The horse was recovering from laminitis. I did all the basic ground work and liberty work with the gelding. The horse seemed shut down but performed well for me. I then did four trail rides on the horse and he was quiet and docile. On the fifth ride, while I had the gelding in a soft jog, he threw me harder than any horse I have ever ridden. ( I've only been thrown twice) There was no warning. I broke my neck and had numerous other injuries. Many weeks later a friend of Skips asked me why I took in such a problem horse that had violently thrown 7 other people. I was aghast, as Skip had never told me this was a dangerous horse that waited to get its rider. He never said the horse had even bucked. Not too long before I took the gelding in for training (WHY DIDNT SKIP DO IT?) Skip asked me to do liberty work with a woman and her horse. I agreed. The session went superbly well and I was pleased with the result as I had never met the horse. He later told me I made him look bad. I should have taken that as a warning on any future business dealings with him. I am lucky as I am not paralyzed. I had to quit training for a living though. My wife and I were staying at the "Tiny House" on the estate of Saluti Cellars in Somerset. Feeling adventurous on our 18th anniversary, we booked a two-hour "River Run" with Saluti Horse Adventures. Among their countless well-trained horses, they personally selected the best possible horse, "Blackjack," for my wife, and by the end of the ride my wife was hugging and snuggling with Blackjack as if they'd been old friends for years. The ride itself was easy and and very scenic, and David told adventurous stories throughout.
