I got to take my time and peruse with no hassle or pressure, and shopping here gave me a glimpse of what and who is out there making art right now in Western Massachusetts (my beloved home base). I appreciated how well-curated everything is, and I also like that there is a wide assortment of offerings for a variety of budgets. I fell in love with a piece of jewelry, got some snacky goodness, and enjoyed the high-echelon fine art. My family comes here regularly, and, sure enough, when I got back home to California, they surprised me with a beautiful, quirky, shaggy stuffed toy by an indie designer - the perfect cure for no-longer-in-Massachusetts-blues! This isn't a tourist shop; it's a local jewel.

I spent the weekend in a small town in Massachusetts, and on the way back to the city we decided to stop by a town called Great Barrington. I researched ahead of time and saw an article from Vogue magazine of places with what we should visit when we are there, and among vintage stores and crystals shops there was this cute home decor and gift shop on the list. I was the one who wanted to go there. And made my friends go there. When we get there, the shop had all these interesting knick knacks and plates, and it resembled a West Elm. They had a section of candles. Now if you know me I LOVE scents and candles. I browsed the candle section and there was a lot of the scent combinations that I never heard of, and to be honest, I do this everywhere with candles because you are buying the scent you have to make sure you like it. I picked up a small travel sized candle that was priced at 8.95 but I was on the fence about it and continued walking around the store and caught up with my friends. I showed them the candle and asked what they thought and they were neutral about it. I was really considering buying that candle, but me and my friends went to a huge Target the day before and spent an ungodly amount of time and an embarrassing amount of money there. Have a huge problem shopping and it is very easy for me to go overboard so I am trying to practice self control. I thought "Milly do you NEED this candle?" I didn't. "Will this candle spark joy?" It won't. No candle would. I set the candle down and continued walking around but I felt the two store employees (a man and a woman who I can only assume are the store owners) eyes on me. They didn't greet me and my friends but they would not stop staring at us. Even when I went up to the register to look at the products they said nothing. Me and my friends were headed towards the door and I saw the woman whisper something to him and he started to follow us, rearranging the shelves near us and circling us but still not saying anything. When he went back the register I talked to my friends "Hey is it me or are we being watched?" My friends confirmed that the vibes were indeed very bad and we decided to leave the store. As we were walking out the door the male store clerk aggressively walked towards me and said "Hey do you have that candle you picked up?" "No I put it down" I said. "Can you show me where you put it?" This dude made we walk through the whole store looking for the candle. It was so humiliating my heart was beating so fast and I was sweating. I went right to the area to where I left the candle and the candle was actually at the FUCKING COUNTER THEY WERE STANDING AT. Had they checked their surroundings for 1 minute they would have saw it, but instead they choose to embarrass me and my friends. If they were really concerned about me stealing they could have approached me. "Hey do you have questions about the products?" "Do you know what scent you are looking for?" Or even a more aggressive "Did you want me to ring that up for you?" All of those things would be problematic but at least it would still have the guise of good customer service. Which brings me to another point, I am the epitome of a dumbass millennial. I drink oat milk matcha lattes, I go to yoga at least twice a week, I live in WILLIAMSBURG, and I have spent lots of money on "crystals" (rocks) that will "manifest abundance." Needless to say I am fiscally irresponsible as fuck. Had they given me the slightest bit of attention and talked to me about the brand story of any of the candles or the sustainability of their 40 dollar salad bowls I would have bought so much shit because to be honest I eat that shit up for breakfast and ask if it's gluten free. Outside of the store I was so angry and embarrassed I couldn't stop crying. My friends were visibly upset and shaken too, I couldn't stop crying so much so that the woman store owner came outside. But instead of listening or asking if I was ok she immediately defended her actions towards me "I just want you to know we do that all the time to everyone, people steal from us all the time" Then it became crystal clear to me why the store owner was outside. It wasn't to check in on me or apologize for bad customer experience (for the record neither the man nor the woman apologized) it was to make HERSELF feel better about the situation. Spend your money somewhere that doesn't make people feel terrible.

With one caveat ... their grading in regard to condition is worse than on EBay even. Essentially, if someone tap danced on a record while wearing a set of golf cleats, it would likely be graded a VG+. NM records I have purchased here play VG/VG+ at best. The final straw was when I purchased a record here last weekend which was graded at VG+. Took it home and played it and at the top of the scale, we are talking Good, more likely it should grade as Fair. On EBay, even the VG+ copies sell for $10-$12. I was okay with paying $15 here to support a local business. Just to let you know I am not a cranky curmudgeon with Howard Hughes-esque perfectionism, the record had a scratch which caused a 'bang' each time the needle hit it for 40 seconds of the FIRST song on Side 1. Then, it sounded like someone was slowly crushing a bag of crackers and shaking the bag with the pieces for the remainder of the first side. The second side wasn't much better with a hissing throughout and one series of scratches which made two songs sound as if a roman candle was going off. The records are in plastic sleeves so you can't really inspect them. This is not my first issue. The last 5 records I purchased here, 3 were junk, graded VG+ to Excellent. That would be fine if they were decent buys ... each time, they were pretty expensive. $20 for a Stones album I could buy new for $30. I get the draw of nostalgia ... but honestly, I will take a newly pressed album, even with remastering, over an original pressing with more popping sounds than you wear on the 4th of July. The store moved from the big, Victorian house on Main Street, which looks like its reopening as a chocolatier/confectioner. Its smaller now and tucked away in the ally with the little restaurants. I'm all about supporting local business but I'm sick of throwing out records that I pay $15 for because they play 2 or 3 levels below their graded level. I've bought my last record here.

There were some random novelty items, CDs, tin signs, political bobble heads, and stuff I don't even know. My aunt and uncle bought an Arlo Gunthrie CD and I bought 10 postcards at $0.60 each. I think that was really spendy for postcards. Especially postcards that were obviously separated from a book that I KNOW was less expensive than $0.60 each. But still. It was convenient to buy them there rather than hunt them down online. The store itself was also really random. It was kinda crowded, kinda junky, but in an artsy-fartsy way. There was an upstairs, but I didn't make it up there. I loved how they used a Boston Globe newspaper bag to bag my purchases. My aunt got a different re-used bag for her CD.

Turns out they had an hour long poetry reading event curated by Voices of Poetry, an amazing poetry group run by Neil Silberblatt. I drive in, parked in the free lot, bought a ticket in the main building and explored for a bit before the event began. The poetry reading featured Chard di Niord (poet laureate of Vermont), Patrick Donnelly (director of the Poetry Center at the Frost Place), Shanta Lee (recipient of the Arthur Williams Award for Meritorious Service to the Arts), Hilde Weisert, winner, 2017 Gretchen Warren Award (New England Poetry Club) & 2016 Tiferet Journal Poetry Award. Every single poet was super talented and covered a large range of topics. Now I've been to my fair share of poetry readings however the talent and environment here really set this one apart. The backdrop and setting of the grounds is absolutely gorgeous. There is a short trail that you can hike and also plenty of beautiful walking paths, with plenty of sculptures, artwork, fountains and incredible trees/flowers for your viewing pleasure.
