Unfortunately this place does not live up to its so called reputation as the best Thai restaurant in Winnipeg. I've been to Thailand and loved their food, and was hoping that this place would bring me back to the amazing culinary flavours of that country. The flavours are pretty subdued and compared to other Thai places in the city, the price is steep for what you get. I don't mind paying for food if it's good but it wasn't anything special at all and the portions were small. Seriously, $6.50 for 4 deep fried spring rolls filled with cabbage?? The dipping sauce was the blandest fish sauce I've ever tasted. The 4 skewers of chicken satay ($7.99) was decently grilled; the peanut dipping sauce was passable. I love green curry with chicken but this tiny bowl ($10.99) was filled with more green curry sauce than veggies and meat. It was very disappointing. Also had a shrimp and veggie stir fry dish...another mediocre dish. Rice is also extra at $1.50. The restaurant itself is newly renovated with modern furnishings and a new coat of paint decorated with Thai art and pictures. Service was nice and welcoming. I just don't understand why this place is packed on the weekends??

Most authentic Thai food in Winnipeg! Soups, curries, Pad Thai and Mee Krob are some of my favourites!

Great Thai food. Fresh and fried springrolls were great, and the soft egg noodles and pad Thai hit the spot.

We had the tofu and seaweed soup, which was wonderfully comforting and clean-tasting, the satay eggplant, which even my omnivorous mother thought was delicious, and the "vegan" fish with lemon, which was perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. (My mother and I agreed that it tasted like fancy fish sticks, and if that sounds like faint praise, remember that there was no fish in it whatsoever, so it was convincing!) The service was great. Our server, who I think was also the chef, brought a small extra bowl for the soup without us asking because she'd overheard us saying it might be nice to share, and they were some lovely small touches like the water having a touch of lemon in it and the green tea we ordered, which was solidly decent, coming pre-steeped with no teabag so it didn't get sharp over the course of the meal. This would be a great restaurant for families or friend groups with a mix of vegans and non-vegans, who don't want to limit the vegan members in their options but still want crowd-pleasing and affordable food. The "fish" we had would also be a sure hit with picky kids on those occasions as well, as I suspect much of the menu would be. I wish I could teleport the whole restaurant to my hometown!

When I called to make a reservation (only taken between 5-7pm) the staff member told me they only have 18 seats so it is very "cozy". There were 3 of us and we ended up sitting at the bar, which was actually just fine for us. Since the Roost is renounced for their house cocktails, it was actually quite entertaining to be able to watch the bartender make the cocktails, see the different glasses and cups they had for each drink and just get to know the staff more. With that said, the Roost's cocktail menu is so fun and there were so many choices, including mocktails, that it was actually difficult to choose drinks. I think in total we tried maybe 5 of them and they were all phenomenal. For food, we ordered a couple of different things. We had the vegan cheese platter - oh yeah, this place has a large vegan/vegetarian friendly menu - some baos or steamed buns and the scallop risotto. I want to say my favorite were actually the steamed buns - nice and fluffy and warm and full of flavor. This place was such a nice little treat during our time in Winnipeg and I would imagine that, if I lived in Winnipeg, it would quickly become one of my go to places for a date or a night out with a friend. Worth the visit if you're in Winnipeg.

The cocktails and the mixology are inspired! The service was slow and sporadic. The vegan burger was tasty but so mushy most of the "burger" ended up on the plate and not part of the sandwich. It's a nice place to go for a drink (good ambiance) but I wouldn't even recommend the tapas from the VERY limited menu. So just to qualify, it's a good place. It's just me that won't be going again.

Menu standouts for myself are the following: Green Curry- tastes fresh and a lovely smooth texture. Tastes better soaked into rice for leftover the next day. Beef Pad Thai- highlights the tamarind in the pad Thai. I generally prefer a thinner rice noodle, but theirs works just fine. Does not "dry out" and clump which is great. A little saucier than other pad thais, but the sauce is lovely if a bit sweet. Crab Rangoon- has a great crunch and the crab/cream cheese inside is still moist and flavourful, not "clump" or dry in the least. The dip it comes with is great. Massaman Curry- a personal favourite. The Curry is not watery in the slightest, very flavourful. Peanuts stand out and the potatoes are the perfect size and nicely softened. Simple and delish. Please note that I order most items at "hot" heat level, occasionally medium spicy. Both are good, I prefer the heat though. . I do wish it was a 1-10 scale instead though- I would probably order between 4 and 8. Portions are large and lend themselves to leftovers. It is pricier than other places, but worth it. The restaurant itself is not the fanciest spot, but I find it to be very charming. It appears to be a family run operation, and it is so important to support local. I do wish there was more/better parking. Overall it's a 4/5 experience, but I base my yelp star review solely on the food.

I really enjoyed it, too much to finish all the rice. I would definitely go back or recommend it to others looking for great Thai food.
