I was recently out roaming around the North Bay with my big old Mamiya medium-format film camera when I realized I hadn't brought enough "120" style film with me. I poked around on my phone and discovered that I was pretty close to Shutterbug, so I decided to stop in. I could not have been happier or more impressed with my experience! The staff was super friendly and welcoming, the store was clean and bright and well designed, and OMG the inventory. In addition to all the modern digital stuff you'd hope/expect to see, this store has an absolutely incredible supply of vintage film cameras and accessories. Seriously, for a film photography buff like me, it was a financially dangerous situation LOL Long story short: I walked out with several rolls of 120 film, and a determination to return ASAP to do some more shopping. I went in to get a disposable camera. The kind where it tells you how many photos you have and you have to go get them developed. The young gentleman working, his name starts with an A I think but I forget it- he was a total rockstar. He taught me about different types of cameras in that area & even took some out of a case so I could look at them. He told me about the process of getting it developed & what films he recommends. I told him I was going to the pumpkin patch & he offered to set it all up for me so it was ready to go. He taught me what batteries it takes & how to put the film in. Showed me what all the buttons do & did so with a smile. You could tell he was excited because I was excited. Not only did he teach me and get me interested- he created a new hobby of mine. My brother and I had our pictures taken in shutterbug Santa Rosa Ca for passport pictures 2x2 for Philippine consulate. When we got to the consulate our pictures were rejected because they were not the right size. We paid $30 each so the total was $65. We needed to go to Walgreens San Francisco for another picture. I was looking for a lens and was in need of it before a big job. I am very happy I found this store given the recent camera store climate of closures. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, and knowledgeable. It was fun to talk shop with the sales associates (because who doesn't love talking shop)! They had the lens I needed, and were able to honor the factory rebate. I even sold a lens while I was there which was put towards my purchase! The store is very clean, organized, and they seem to have an extensive stock of new year as well as used camera gear. All in great shape. I used them 10 years ago and was very happy with them. I decided to use them again and they had very helpful friendly staff. However, I purchased two batteries for my camera less than a week ago and asked them to help me put them in my camera. I opened the brand new pack at the store (purchased 6 days ago) and I was told that the batteries are weak. I asked if I could get a replacement as I have just purchased them a few days ago and opened the brand new pack in the store and I was told that there is no guarantee on these batteries .Well, I am not going back. They lost a customer and I will not promote them if asked. Looks like I will do everything on line. Amazon would most likely replaced them. Came in this afternoon to ask for help with my old Canon T3i whose settings I had managed to mess up with Canon EOS software trying to get a shutter count. I spoke with an older man with a slight accent who was pleasant, extremely helpful, and very customer-focused. He was able to set things up for me in mere moments, get my camera back to normal, good as new. No charge. These days, businesses rarely give anything free. Very unusual. Not like the old days. It's good to find a business today whose employees know what "service" and "putting the customer first" mean. Prints are high quality, $7 for 9x12 prints and they did a beautiful job on the prints. Local. Helpful. Honest. Great Customer Service. I wanted to support local anddd not have to send my camera off to Nikon to check the issue out. I called Shutterbug ahead and the employee said it sounded like a lens issue and to come in. There were at least 3/4 workers, so I was greeted and helped very quickly. I was helped by Francis, who happened to be the one I talked to on the phone with. He literally unstuck my lens and got it working, and then he taught me how to use my manual lens (I didn't know how to get it going). This was all for free! I asked if I could pay something and he kindly replied, "nope; that's what we're here for." So here is an honest and well deserved review as a huge thank you! These guys in this location are very well staffed. Everytime I set foot into this Shutterbug, there is an entire staff of smiling older guys ready to help a gal out. This Santa Rosa Avenue location is fully stocked to the walls with all of your nerdy camera needs. Today I needed some prints made and a small tutorial on the machine for prints. Christopher was very patient with me and my gazillion photos as he helped me edit each one of them. Prints pop out very quickly with no wait time at all. It's very convenient! They have a great selection of pictures frames. Ranging in a variety of sizes, styles and colors. Shutterbug has their own private parking lot. No street or metered parking which os always a plus. I forgot my Nikon charger and the guys helped with suggesting alternatives that also had a USB car charger functionality with it for my ride up to Mendocino. The staff is super knowledgable about photography spots on the way up to the coast. Some of the stuff is slightly more expensive than what you see online but consider comparing a small business vs Amazon. read more

WILL NOT COME HER AGAIN Three years ago I brought my vacation photos to be developed by Shutterbug in Santa Rosa. They screwed up my photos. In late January of this year (2023), I brought some photos, this time taken by my cell phone. When I got my photos back, they were so disorganized that it took me hours to put them together. Wonderful experience all around. I went in to get my film roll developed and the man that helped me was very welcoming and friendly. I know close to nothing about film photography and I really felt like I didn't have to because they made it so easy. In four days I got the prints, the negatives, and a CD for the digital photos! I recently made the move to a Canon mirror-less camera. The gentlemen at shutterbug were outstanding throughout the entire initial purchase experience. A few weeks after the initial purchase of the camera, there was an issue where the camera would shut off during a shoot and ask me to remove the battery to fix the problem. I brought it back to the store hoping they could help even though I'd be dealing with Canon's warranty at this point. It turns out that they were able to completely resolve the issue in store--no need for Canon corporate what so ever. I cannot thank this group of professionals enough for the way they took care of me. There may be better prices online if you look, but there is no way I would have gotten my issue resolved in such a satisfactory manner--and quickly--had I purchased from B and H or Amazon. I was previously of the opinion that retail stores are dead and that Amazon will run the world, but not as far as Shutterbug is concerned. Thank you. read more

Super helpful and knowledgeable! I lost my cameras in the Tubbs Fire and needed to replace them for a vacation. After a great discussion with one of the guys (sorry, forgot his name!!), I was able to narrow it down to 2 cameras, one larger, one compact. Both met all the criteria I had so it was just a matter of me making a decision. They let me play with them in the store and gave me no pressure whatsoever. He actually was gently suggesting the less expensive camera! I ended up with the Nikon A900 and it worked great for my vacation. The optical zoom was what I wanted (35x) and the size and USB charging were perfect for vacation. My only "meh" moment was the selection of camera cases. I was spoiled with a super stylish one in the past (no, really!) but they only had the more standard boring ones ones. But it served its purpose and protected my camera nicely. I had looked on Amazon and other sites-- the price was comparable and the ability to use the camera and get a feel for size and weight made going to Shutterbug the best choice. read more

I am mostly speaking of one specific customer service guy. Unfortunately I didn't catch his name. But I went in this shop to buy a flash. I thought I needed it. Well upon walking in this man asked what I needed and what for, I told him. He said I probably didn't need a flash just to change some setting on my camera. Which he then helped me with. I ended up leaving the shop with nothing but with a whole lot of appreciation and I will be returning when I do need to make a purchase! You don't get this type of honestly anymore, especially now. This guy could have made a $200+ sale but decided to be honest instead! Not many places around like this. I was totally going to Best Buy too, I'm so glad I didn't. Although they charged me $10.83 to print on my own transfer paper a 4x6 image, the gentleman was very nice and helped me with all my concerns. I was upset with the pricing but after calling FedEx, Office Depot, Staples, etc no one would do it for me. I would have done it myself but unfortunately my printer used heat which isn't compatible me with the paper. Overall I would use their service again but wish it wasn't that price for what I got especially bringing my own material. But they did print me doubles which is a plus just in case I mess up. read more

I'm just another person addicted to camera gear. Luckily, I have Shutterbug to feed my addiction. I usually hold out until Black Friday to do all my shopping, but I'm coming to realize that aside from accessories, the cameras themselves really don't get discounted much on other sites (B&H, Amazon, etc.). I had been eyeing a particular body for a while and noticed it was only $6 more at Shutterbug, so I figured it's worth it to support a local business and pick it up the same day. I had some questions between that one and another body and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. All around great service! I really wish I could give one more star, but unfortunately I was pretty disappointed with the latest photo print I had done. I had the same image printed at 5 different labs for comparison (I was thinking about changing labs) and found that the print I had done at Shutterbug just wasn't up to par (color was pretty off). Don't get me wrong- it wasn't bad; it was still frame-worthy. But in comparison to other professional labs, it just wasn't what I expected. While I may not be ordering prints here, they for sure have my business when it comes to gear and accessories! read more

Had to put the slides in their borrowed Ektachrome trays, no prob. My son-in-law had recommended I check them out - until then, I didn't know the shop existed. Glad I did! The price was less expensive than any online place I had researched. Happy to support LOCAL and the photos (on CD) were ready in just a couple of days! I was really disappointed with my experience here. My partner and I have a photography business and wanted to rent two Canon lenses for a photoshoot so we called ahead and asked if they were available. The woman on the phone said yes and let us know how much each lens would be and when we could pick them up. We asked if there was anything else we needed to know or bring and she said no. When we arrived we began filling everything out for the lenses and everything was going great until we were asked for a $1,700 deposit! Basically we were not told over the phone that you have to put the total amount that the equipment is worth on your credit card for the duration of your rental. We explained that the woman never mentioned this and their only response was, "Oh, maybe you spoke with a new employee". Because we aren't the type of people to have tons of high limit credit cards we weren't able to rent the lenses and left very unhappy. I probably won't go to Shutterbug again when I can rent lenses from Borrowlenses.com and not have thousands of dollars frozen in my account for two days. I understand protecting your assets but there should be a better system and they should do research on what other companies' policies are. read more

The photo gods must have been smiling on us because we were assisted by Yury, who was tremendously helpful with the whole experience. We told him what we were looking for and he provided us with several options and explained the pros and cons of each with a quick overview. I came in today to get service on my very old camera. It had been in storage for quite some time and I wanted to use it again. I took it in to the store and the gentleman behind the counter serviced it quickly. He looked at the lens and thoroughly examined the parts of the camera. He asked me about the camera and told me that the light meter may be broken. After further inspection, he determined that the camera was fine and the fluorescent lighting in the shop made the light meter not work correctly. I was very happy to hear my camera was in good shape. My son has picked up a new hobby and was glad to pass it along to him in good shape.
