Looking for pizza and a cold beer, then head up the road from the beach to here!!!…read more This is a great place for a nice pizza...it is also more affordable then many of the other restaurants around. This is a family run business...I am starting to think that every business in Sicily is family run. One of the things that I love is the wood burning oven. It is just amazing to stand here and watch the owner Lina make pizza after pizza. There is also a wood burning oven here too and it smells so good...I just love the smell of wood on a fire. The oven is just roaring and it takes like 5 minutes for a fresh pizza to bake in this massive brick oven. I need one of these at home!!! My personal favorite pizza is olives and fresh prosciutto...I could eat that all day long. Plus I love the personal pizza...it is so nice to not have to worry about what other people want. Just get your own pizza and I will see you after I am done cutting mine up. Yeah you have to work hard to eat your pizza in Sicily...you have to cut it up yourself...there are no squares or triangles here...I can cut it into circles if I want...the choice is mine!!! I usually make a mess but it is a delicious mess. Some of the toppings that people get are just surprising to me...for example I saw someone get french fries on there pizza...it was kind of like someone just dumped a side of fries on top of a pizza. This is not for me but it seems like many locals like it. There is also ice cold Peroni Beer and some nice house wines (in a pitcher)...it was hard for me to decide, so I drank both. I had to wash down all of that yummy pizza with something...can you blame me?

BEACH DRINK This is…read morea beautiful location on the beach and it is one of the prime spots to hang out at while at Marina de Modica. My cousin wanted to grab a beer with us and he told me to meet him here at 11am. We arrived at the same time and immediately walked up to the bar. It's funny how Sicilians like beer from other countries. I would have been happy with a Moretti but my cousin wanted Becks. Now I must admit the Becks here tastes amazing and nothing like the crap they serve in America, so I was happy with the selection. My little one did not get a beer but settled on a home made granita. This is totally a refreshing treat while on a hot beach just like my Becks beer. We sat there and talked with my cousin. We had to go to Google Translate a few times and luckily they have free wifi here. The bartender didn't trust me with the password and he typed it into our two iPhones. He seemed a little mad that I handed him two phones but oh well I'm Sicilian too so don't push me. My cousin still has a flip phone and was amazed with the translation tool on our smart phones. It does come in handy when traveling. We enjoyed our beer and watched the people on the packed beach. The temperature was almost 90 but luckily Sud had a shaded area for us to sit. I saw a bunch of customers come in and use the free wifi without buying anything. Now I know why the bartender guarded the password but I think he's not doing a great job of protecting it if people are using the internet without making any purchase. SUD also has food. I was told that the chef spoke English but I never got a chance to actually talk to him. He always seemed busy when I walked by and we walked by here every day for 2 weeks. You can also rent beach chairs and an umbrella which comes in handy during this heat. Many years ago this didn't happen and the beach was public for everyone. My cousin told me that they probably paid money to the local government in order to rope off the area. I'm sure this was an under the table deal. They still do business here the old fashion way...wink wink. There is a sand volleyball court in back and a few sand bocce ball courts in front. I wanted to get in on the bocce ball but the players were very intense. I felt like I was watching Bocce ball on ESPN, if they actually would broadcast that sport. A local friend of mine was playing all the time and I kept waiting for him to ask me to join in but it never happen. Sicilians don't follow hints very well or they simply just ignore them. That's the Sicilian way! If you find yourself on the beach in Marina de Modica then this is the place to grab a drink with a view of the beach. They kind of have everything from beach chairs to drinks to food. So kick back and enjoy the day because you are on the Southern most point of Italy.

IT'S SCACCIA TIME…read more Our friend, Frank from Brooklyn, who is originally from Pozzallo introduced us to Squitty. Upon our arrival to visit the family in Sicily, Frank ordered scaccia here for our welcoming party. Now you are probably wondering what is a scaccia. It is something my family has been making for years but you can only find this special food in the region of Ragusa and Modica in Sicily. The only way to try and describe it would be to call it a type of calzone but it's different. Scaccia come with different fillings and it is a type of farm food which is very easy to eat as street food too. You'll find several local places selling these around the towns when visiting near Ragusa and Modica. We had three different kinds of scaccia at the party. There was the typical onion, tomato and grated parmesan cheese, as well as the ricotta and sausage. I really loved the ricotta and sausage. My wife thought it was a little too dry, which was great because she gave me her piece. The third scaccia was unique. It was made with squid and potato. This is very special and according to Frank you can only find this version in Pozzallo. This makes sense because Pozzallo is located on the sea while Modica and Ragusa are Land locked. In fact, four years ago Frank brought this special scaccia over from another restaurant and everyone was a little let down because the ratio of squid to potatoes was really one sided. Let's just say people went fishing and kept getting potatoes. This year he ordered from Squitty and they did not let the party down. This was only my second time eating this unique scaccia and Frank supplied both experiences. I will say the second time was much better. I was so happy to find a lot of squid inside. The ratio of squid to potatoes was perfect. I would definitely eats these again. Street food is delicious in Sicily and if you find yourself in Pozzallo, then I recommend you stop in here. I don't think they will have the squid and potato to go at the counter but I could be wrong. I believe you have to special order that but they do have other traditional scaccia to grab and go. These make a great snack and are also great to bring to a party. Enjoy!
