I had front row seats to see Marlon Wayans do his thing (and by front row, I mean my knees were basically co-starring in the show). There was no legroom. I'm 5'10, & it felt like I was trying to fold myself into a carry-on bag. The theater has that charming, nostalgic vibe like stepping into a time machine. Right back to an era when people were apparently 4'11 and had 0 personal space. The seats? Think vintage airplane: cramped, creaky, & not built for modern-sized humans. If you're tall, prepare to get cozy w/ your own knees or the stage. That said, the staff were absolute gems. Super friendly & helpful (which helped balance out the "I might need a chiropractor after this" situation). Great show!Cool vibe! But if you're over 5'8, maybe bring some Advil,Icy Hot,& a yoga mat for after!

Great location. Arrive early enough to pay, park and walk to theater. No on street parking. Nice restaurants near by for pre show dining

First time coming here for the Nutcracker ballet. The theater has a smaller, intimate layout, with orchestra, mezzanine and a few side balcony lower level seats. We sat in the orchestra/floor area and were able to see everything perfectly (minus a few guest obstructions) There are two bar areas set up upon walking inside, with will call at the left with a beautiful staircase that leads to the upper seating areas. We also purchased a nice, small, nutcracker snow globe. All proceeds went to the ballet

A wonderful Community theater, large enough to be able to bring to Broadway shows, but small enough to feel comfortable and cozy. There is no bad seat in the house. We have seen several shows here and have always come away pleased. The staff is really nice and helpful. Always great to grab dinner and a show.

We attended a special graduation here recently. Big theatre with a balcony level overhead. Kinda a little old but I'm sure there is some wonderful history here. It was nice that they were able to accommodate families to attend the graduation festivities.

Very nice, modern theater. Impossibly slow getting in, up & to the seats, almost painfully slow..when you arrive up the stairs to the Mezzanine, instead of entering the path to your seats, you must loop around the hallway to wait in a very long line for the ushers..not a bad seat in the house, best to avoid the seats left & right furthest from center though if given the choice. We were MezzL row K seat 9 & it was perfect, but a bit closer & I would have been able to see the expressions a bit better. Parking garages are plentiful, coming out of the Crown Street garage driveway, you are met with traffic stopped for pedestrians crossing over to the theater, and in front of you to actually leave the garage. So in the future, I would park at a further garage & enjoy a post show stroll. Downtown New Haven is lovely, plenty of places to grab coffee/tea or a bite. We drove to NH to see Come From Away, and it was a wonderful experience all around

The Shubert Theater is such a charming venue with rich history and sits in the perfect spot downtown. Seriously, the Crown Street parking garage is right next door and there are some of the best restaurants in the state just steps away. They've always got a variety of shows -- not just theater performances. Check out their broadway series, orchestra events, and more. STAFF: Everyone is friendly and helpful. Bar tenders are great and move quickly, although there's never been a wait with 3 bars. You can expect quick assistance to your seats with a (masked) smile! VENUE: Lobby has restrooms on both floors and a lounge to grab a drink and snack before the show. Inside, the seating is intimate which means it's not hard to get a spot with a good view. When buying tickets I suggest grabbing the orchestra seats. Balcony has a pretty steep rake. Not Chichen-Itza-Mayan-Ruins steep, but enough to remind you to be careful getting to your seat. I appreciate the safety protocols of vaccine or negative test status as well as masking.

This wonderful historic theatre has been closed to public audiences since the spring of 2020 when the COVID pandemic forced the closure of preforming arts venues around the state and the country. By October 2020 as things were slowly reopening in CT with capacity limits and social distancing requirements the Shubert introduced new virtual performances including the Next Stop New Haven at home Late Night Series which I participated in. Purchase of a ticket included a link to the show and a party box that you pick up at the theatre. The party box is filled with delicious goodies ranging from appetizers to adult beverages and desserts from several New Haven restaurants and businesses who partnered with the Shubert to provide the food and drinks. The most recent Next Stop at home event had performances by 3 Broadway rising stars and a stand-up comedy show from Vinnie Penn. We enjoyed the evening of entertainment and will plan to attend others in the future. Better yet, We hope to be back to the theatre in person real soon.

I visited the Shubert Theater for the first time to see Mystery Science Theatre 3000 live. The show was so enjoyable!! I thought the ticket prices were high ($48/each) considering we were way up in the balcony. There were lots of open seats as well. The theater seems well maintained, but doesn't offer much in terms of leg room. I saw a few upcoming shows that peaked my interest, but ticket prices will determine whether I attend or not. So far, they seem too high for shows that I could see for less money at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton, for example. It's also hard to compete with College Street Music Hall, but at least this is another venue option for entertainment.

I love their values: cultivating love as action, nurturing artistic, spiritual, and communal growth, and engaging the community to expand their boundaries and learn new skills. I attended their holiday show and dinner, By the Hearth, a bit of holiday variety show. Some people sang songs. Some people did comedy. One performer did a poignant soliloquy about losing his dad and his love of Phantom of the Opera. I really enjoyed the skit/songs featuring the two kids who were told there was no Santa. You can tell these students (some are grad students in their 30s, so don't assume these are all young college kids) are funny and talented. Even though every skit didn't land with me, I really felt the community there, and it felt like a safe place to be. I had the dinner as well. They had some basic dishes--braised beef roast (they were out, bummer), roasted garlic parm cabbage wedge with mashed potatoes, and smothered pork chop. They also have starters, such as grilled octopus, French onion soup, and mushroom toast. The mushroom toast was very good, I ate it all! They also have dessert and wines/beers/cocktails. You can order a prix fixe for a bargain as well. Dinner starts at 6:30 PM for the 8 PM show and they take orders until 7:20 PM. There are six (?) tables up front and three tall tables in the back. I started at the tall table in the back, as I arrived a little later, and it was fine, but the two rows of seats in front of those tables were also high chairs, so before the show started, I moved to the front row. I also want to say the servers and the manager was super nice and accommodating. And I loved that the actors/performers and staff were all diverse from all walks of life. Again, I enjoyed the show. It was fantastic seeing original material and you never knew what to expect from one minute to the next, and you could tell they were having fun. I compare this group to like Second City or The Groundlings. At the very end of the show, I was getting my coat and bag together to leave and I dropped my wine glass (from my wine ordered at dinner) and it shattered everywhere. One of the actors yelled, "mazel tov" and it became a natural moment in the show. They marched off the stage and the glass was cleaned up. Before the show, I told the manager that I've been to tons of shows, including some of the biggest Broadway productions, but I often find "the shows in basement are the best time." That ending mazel tov cemented my opinion about this place. Thank you, Yale Cab.

Sure, I'm not slinky enough to pull it off, but it could certainly work in theory. I've been to two shows at the Yale Cabaret, and have enjoyed myself thoroughly both times. The quality of the acting is top-notch, even at what could be an uncomfortably close distance. The space is tiny, with very limited seating, so booking tickets in advance is fairly important. The sacrifice in convenience is repaid many times over by the cozy atmosphere. There isn't a lot of fancy decor to speak of, but with the soft lights and the little round tables with high chairs, you can almost hear the air tinkle with glass and jazz and other pleasant things. The shows themselves were entertaining, though I'll admit that the odds of finding a stellar script are higher at more established, less student-run places like the Rep. The shows do seem to be shorter, which is often a plus, and really, the experience is worth your time. The venue inspires love, and that's hard to beat.

We had the pleasure of going to our first show this past weekend, which was the closing weekend for Small Mouth Sounds. I really liked how unpretentious this theater is, with the super high-quality acting and minimal fanfare. The show we saw was in stage two, which made the experience even more intimate. I appreciated the concession stand at the entrance. Drinks are allowed inside. On this night, the crowd tended to be on the older side. No problem with that, but it was noticeable. If you're being somewhat spontaneous, definitely go for the standby tickets. Even on this closing weekend, we found out about an hour after getting on the standby list that we had scored two tickets for the same evening. And the tickets that were given up happened to be second row, which was lucky and awesome. I am definitely excited to come back for more shows.
