We even saw some roadrunners catching a break. Perhaps getting a coffee break too before the adventures ahead? Although the place is small (and it being the off season), there was still a line in the morning - a good sign! The kitchen, namely the grill, is right in front of you where you order. That being said, you can smell all of the delicious food being made fresh to order. That includes the jalapenos. When I ordered, I went ahead and got an iced coffee and the burrito mexicano. The coffee did the job. No complaints. The burrito was certainly a surprise. It has no meat but it makes up for it was plenty of flavor, namely through the jalapenos and avocado. In reality, it's such a simple burrito (eggs, tomato, and onions as well) that just packs a punch of flavor. Highly recommend!

This only makes sense given the fluctuating cost of eggs in this past year. This is my wishlist for all restaurants to follow. It takes a special place to convince me to love a food I've avoided for years, and this is that…read moreplace. We were in the area for a trail run, a 55k to be exact, and so was everyone else. Whether they ran a 10, 20, 35, 55 or 100k, the hundreds of runners finished with the same goal, to find food and replenishment (and for many a rewarding dinner). My husband and I found ourselves here after walking a few miles and passing three other spots packed with company. Alongside a lone ice cream truck (more on that coming soon), Dead Hungry was oddly quiet. I'm so glad we gave them a try because truly struck gold with this find. After a brief scan of the menu, I found myself craving something light, so (after consulting Yelp) I went for the butternut squash soup. Butternut squash is one of those dishes I'd "sacrifice" to try anything, and I mean anything else on the menu, but perfectly seasoned with fragrant, light spice, and topped with toasted pumpkin seeds, this was the perfect pairing to a cold desert evening. I would never have imagined I'd find delightful borscht, classic Peruvian dishes, pork butt and incredible butternut squash soup in Ghost Town west Texas, but here we are! At first I was tempted to keep this gem to myself, that is until I realized that these folks deserve all of the praise! If you're traveling to Big Bend, joining a group for a desert run, mountain biking or otherwise find yourself anywhere near this part of West Texas you have to give them a try, just remember to check their daily menu first!
