We ordered custom cookies from Mariko for our wedding, and they turned out absolutely perfect! From the very beginning, Mariko was so easy to work with. She was responsive, kind, and genuinely invested in bringing our vision to life. We had a few specific ideas and color details in mind, and she executed our vision perfectly. The cookies themselves were not only beautifully decorated (truly little works of art!) but also delicious. Guests loved the taste of the buttery homemade cookies that were almost too pretty to eat. If you're looking for someone who can create cookies that are both picture-perfect and genuinely enjoyable to eat, I can't recommend Short Street Sweets enough. She made such a special touch for our big day and we're so grateful!

SHE PROPOSEDDDDDD!!! (see @mary m.'s review cuz she totally predicted that my review was coming..lol!) One of my besties proposed to her bridesmaids/bridal party using sugar cookies in her bridesmaid proposal box! Let's be completely honest, there is no better way to get proposed to then on something scrumptious. Especially when all your favorite people love sweets! When we were handed our ribbon tied boxes, we peeked inside and the first thing my eyes went to were the cookies! There were three total in the shape of a wedding dress, proposal plaque, and the future bride + groom's monogram!! They were so beautifully made and each cookie was so smooth...not to mention, the handwriting on these cookies are seriously impressive. I can't even write on paper this well, let alone IN ICING. Anyway, you eat with your eyes first..and they were almost too pretty to eat. But then, you know...I ate them. Super good, buttery, and not too sweet. I liked that they were fresh and def recommend not waiting to eat them cuz no one likes a tough cookie. lol! Amazing cookie, amazing proposal gift! Definitely recommended for a yummy gift that's sure to dazzle!!

Mariko is incredible at what she does, her cookies are true works of art. I was looking to make custom cookies for an Indian bachelorette party. While she's never made anything like that in the past, she was willing and enthusiastic to try and has truly outdone herself. I shared a few images of what I was looking for and a color scheme but the result was so much better than the examples. There is so much intricacy and care in every design, it's quite incredible. And the cookies taste great too, though if I could frame them I would. And on top of that Mariko is responsive and truly a pleasure to work with. Next time I'll try to order a cake :) THANK YOU!!

Mariko's cookies are absolutely amazing! I reached out with only a weeks notice for a custom order of "will you be my bridesmaid?" cookies to give to friends. She was so gracious and luckily was able to accommodate me. Her website was great and online payment was a breeze. When I picked up my order I was blown away. They were wrapped up nicely, and ready to gift to my friends. She even left a few sample cookies in a baggie for me to try! They were delicious!! I had an amazing experience working with Mariko from Short Street Sweets! I needed a few dozen custom logo cookies for a meeting in San Francisco, and I chose Short Street based on great reviews. Mariko was lovely to work with, and the cookies turned out perfectly. She was able to deliver them downtown before our meeting (super helpful, since I live in Chicago and was not attending the meeting). They were a hit! The best part: Mariko was also so sweet to include a "thank you" cookie especially for me, for my colleague to bring back to Chicago. I received it five days later (slightly crumbled from its cross-country travel) when he was back in the office...and I still ate it...and it was still DELICIOUS!!! I hope to visit SF soon so I can try them fresh :) Thanks again!! read more

Hands down the best place to have custom cookies ordered! I cannot say enough good things about Mariko. I had a vision for how I wanted my Valentines Day cookies to look like and she exceeded all of my expectations. My girlfriends were thrilled to receive them as a gift on Valentine's Day. Most of them commented that they were too cute to eat but so happy they did because they not only looked amazing but tasted fantastic as well. Mariko was great communicating with me about the process and worked with me to nail down exactly what I was looking for. When I kept changing the amount of cookies I needed and then almost missed my pick up time, she was always professional and accommodating. We wanted a simple Red Egg design for our little one's Red Egg and Ginger Party. Mariko communicated with me to make sure we had the design perfect - which was an egg shaped cookie with red frosting and a watercolor swish of gold through the middle. I had let her know the party was on Saturday but forgot to mention that we would like to pick up on Friday so that we could package them up - my bad! But luckily Mariko was able to finish up the cookies in time for a Friday night pick up and they were dry enough to package by that evening. The cookies were perfect and everyone really loved them! For decades I have wanted to learn how to decorate cookies. It seems like a life skill that would come in handy. This last Sunday afternoon with a glass of wine in hand, Mariko taught me and a couple other people how to decorate cookies over a couple hours at Glassy Baby in Berkeley. She gave us her tips and tricks and had our space all set up and ready for crafting. I had so much fun. She taught us how to make royal icing, how to color it, and how to consider different consistencies based on the needs of the cookies being decorated. She taught us how to make the cookies that were not just great decorating cookies but they were tasty too!!! She had colored icing in various colors all ready for us to decorate a variety of cookies. We sat down and she talked us through a number of decorating techniques. I walked out of class feeling like I leveled up my baking/decorating game. Mariko sent us home with a cookie package of her other cookies - double chocolate, chocolate, oatmeal, etc - and oh. my. goodness. Her cookies were amazing!!!! If you have the opportunity to taste her delicious creations, are looking to have her teach a class, or need some festive decorated cookies, I highly recommend Mariko. She is delightful and her cookies are delicious! read more

Found Mariko right here on yelp. Usually I'm hesitant about picking people up to make food items on yelp, but I decided to take the leap after my regular baker started to disappoint year after year for my daughter's birthday parties. Design and detail were on point, and as a graphic designer, that stuff is important to me. Let me start off by saying I NEVER do reviews but...Mariko is amazing. You have no doubt when you recieve your order that care and attention to detail was placed in every cookie. Its a shame that we place an order to EAT them. She is so good you almost dont want to eat the cookies at all. Its Edible art. She is so helpful, always on time with her orders and very accommodating to make sure everything is just right. These are some of the cookies and baked goods I have ever had!! Always fresh and delicious! Always moist, crunchy and/or crispy when supposed to be and you can tell from the flavor and texture that Mari uses only the best ingredients. Plus, she is super creative and has made me valentine cookies for my wife and daughter, Warrior's cookies for her friends, Minecraft cookies for kid parties and cookies w/ company logos on them for corporate events. I am very impressed in her ability to make such delicious and beautiful creations! I highly recommend getting her cookies for your next party or from Monterey Market in Berkeley. Plus, she is starting to sell them at some restaurants like Boss Burger and Eugene in Albany uses them in their deserts. Super yummmy!! I have had multiple custom orders from Short Street Sweets. The sugar cookies are beautifully crafted. I work for a large SF-based company and they copied my logo EXACTLY from the web and put them onto tiny silver-dollar-sized cookies. They were the hit of the event. And they tasted great! I've also had Hanukkah cookies made. Little Dreidel and Star of David images on every one. Amazing! read more

Meet the Business Owner: Mariko N.

I'm the baker, owner, dish washer, delivery person, photo taker...it's a one-woman shop! My grandma was an amazing baker and I inherited her love for it, as well as her oven! After years of friends and family encouraging me to start my own business, I finally left the world of children's media and dove into sugar and butter. It's messy, but I love it! Great selection of gourmet goodies-- I regular go in for snacks, cooking sauces from around the world, ice cream, canned drinks, honey & condiments. Appreciate they have plenty of vegan options. They also have a good selection of wines. The owners & staff are super friendly. They love to chat & answer any questions you have. It's a small but mighty space. I honestly wanted to like this, but I really didn't. First of all, I thought I liked pickles but…read moremaybe not to this degree. The "Rice & Pickles" menu also varies, so you don't know what you'll be getting until you show up. I had booked my reservation via email months in advance and requested for a bar seat. We showed up early and looked around the shop; they didn't seem ready yet so we told them we'll wait outside until it was time to check in. Once people started showing up, they were essentially in front of us. I had presumed the staff we talked to would remember we were there first already, but just wanted to wait outside since they weren't ready. Luckily, we were still sat at the bar as we requested, but it was just a chaotic check in system - or I would say there really wasn't one at all. Once we sat down at opening along with everyone else, it still took a while to be served. They were essentially still prepping as we were sat there. The bar seating area was preferred because we could listen to Kevin introduce the food. He was very passionate, but everyone else working there just seemed annoyed to be there. However, the stools are wildly uncomfortable and we were really squished in. The height was also just wrong so you either had to hold the bowl (which was pretty big and heavy) or lean over very far to eat. Now, the pickling/fermenting was Japanese inspired? But it wasn't done well, in my opinion. They used a lot of Asian ingredients but the actual execution was poor. For example, I usually love all things daikon but their daikon bettarazuke was much too fermented. Texture and flavor were both overwhelming - not sweet or crunchy. The only item I really liked was the koji garlic on the avocado (additional supplement $6). That was flavorful and delicious - wish there was more of that. The cured egg was something soy based but tasted like it was sat in the curing liquid for way too long - not good. The rice itself was honestly terrible; brown rice, but just didn't taste like it was properly cooked. The dashi had no flavor even though it was supposed to be fennel leek apple- it was just extremely sour. We didn't like most of the pickled vegetables, just flavor-wise and texturally. Everything was extremely sour and one-note, with no nuance in flavor besides from that, making it not that palatable as whole. Overall, I wouldn't be back but hey if you really like sour vegetables... $36 per bowl per person, 20% automatic gratuity added. Oh, and it was also difficult to pay; we got up and stood by the iPad for a good 10 minutes until they came over to help us pay to leave.

I can't wait to drizzle this on top of a tomato burrata appetizer when summer comes around, or on some vanilla ice cream. Another balsamic I really enjoyed trying out -- that would also go lovely with vanilla ice cream, was the espresso flavored balsamic.
