Review of Dr. Mahooti: To preface: I've come here since I was a child and my experiences were nothing but positive with every other dentist/hygienist. That being said, I felt it necessary to warn anyone looking to get their wisdom teeth out (or really any procedure/advice) by Dr. Mahooti. For context, I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth, "extracted" back in 2019. I put extracted in quotes because I recently found out Dr. Mahooti left two large tooth fragments in my mouth, one on each upper side next to my back molars. I found out about one of the teeth fragments during a follow-up appointment with Dr. Mahooti after I had noticed some poking/pain in my top right molar. I asked Dr. Mahooti about this pain, who first tried to play the tooth fragment off as, "normal anatomy" but then admitted to the mistake by saying it was a, "bad week for him." He then offered to extract this tooth fragment "for free" aka: off the books. I was then seen at a dental office in SF (it's called One Market Dental and is amazing if anyone needs somewhere else to go for this procedure) who did X-rays (which should have been done by Dr. Mahooti after he realized he had left teeth in my mouth??) and they noticed that I had large tooth fragments left behind from the procedure on both sides, not just the one. They confirmed at this time the rarity of this mistake and agreed that my experience with Dr. Mahooti was nothing short of malpractice. On top of all of this, Dr. Mahooti also severed a nerve during the procedure and I now have permanently lost feeling in the entire left side of my tongue. Another causality from a procedure with Dr. Mahooti that could have been easily avoided. (Update 6/11/21: Below is an X ray taken at my new dentists office prior to the teeth extraction I had to get because of Dr. Mahooti. As you can see there are two teeth fragments on the upper right and left sides). read more

I've been going here since they opened over 20 years ago and I'm sorry it's taken so long to write a review because they are fantastic. Forget about all the pain and cringe-worthy trips to the dentist that so many of us recall from back in the day - it is so much better @ Shoreview. The dentists have changed over the years and they are fine but the front office staff and the hygienists are the reason for the five stars. Dr. Vafi was amazing with my kids when they were young as well. The only downside is that there is always something else to take care of (an old filling, a night guard, etc...) but five stars to this place with the most up-to-date technology and an ocean view from many of the dental chairs. read more

What an amazing place. I'm used to old school dental offices where you may be lucky to get a wind chime on the ceiling to stare at. This place is very high tech. I took my 2 year old here for his first cleaning and he actually had a great time. I was very surprised at how modern the facility is. There is a play area for kids in the waiting room with 2 x-box stations for the older kids. Pretty large waiting area so my little one had room to play with some toys I brought. There are TV screens in every cleaning station so you can watch something distracting (my son watched Cars). We were given a tour and there are too many things that were made just for the little kiddos to mention, but needless to say it was amazing. We were shown into our exam room and the tech showed my son a dragon puppet with huge teeth for my son to brush. He had a great time. She then showed him all the tools that were going to be used during the cleaning and had him test them out so he wasn't afraid (the suction, water spray, etc). Then he watched a video of a monkey brushing his teeth which was pretty cute to watch. When the doctor came in, my son was ready to get cleaned. He sat in between my legs for the cleaning and I was totally shocked that he allowed his teeth to be completely cleaned! I mean he even let her scrap his teeth. I really couldn't believe it. Maybe it was the TV but who cares, it worked. I can't say enough great things about this place!!!! read more

I never write Yelp reviews but my experience at Shoreview Dental today reminded me the importance of telling others how great something is. I have been going there for years now and it is as good as it has ever been. As soon as you walk in/call in you are greeted by one of the kindest receptionists that I have ever met at a doctor's office. The staff goes out of their way to make sure appointments can fit everyone's schedule and if you need to make an appointment that day for whatever emergency or in a day or two they have a way of making things happen for their clients. In other words....they go out of their way for the patients. I always look forward to the conversations and ideas they share with me on how to make my smile shine and the pressure they put on me to take care of my teeth. I traditionally have had bad dentist experience including (4 wisdom teeth removal, 2 pulled molars, 1 root canal with 2 broken crowns). I was 10 min early, they took my appointment on time (big star!). I'm also a tooth grinder (my canines are flat), but I didn't tell them it was from clenching my teeth during the many difficult bowel movements I have during the day. I bought off Ebay a self molding mouthguard that works but am lazy about using it (alternative to the $500 professional one). My wife made me go after 2 yrs of no dental exam, got an appointment for following day with D. Piccolotti DDS. She was really thorough and gentle. The hygienist/assistant was excellent and quick with the x-rays, I didn't feel like I had to throw up with the film in the mouth. They use the ultrasonic cleaner instead of the traditional Dr Hook gum mutilator. They also didn't make me rinse and spit a mouthful of blood, they have a suction device and a water spray. I have old silver fillings that need to be taken out and replaced with composite fillings. They push the Invisalign teeth straightening system, but I wasn't interested. I think I can survive going here every 6 months. read more

Careless and Negligent? sadly.... I was living in San Francisco last year and I went to see Dr. Piccolati at Shoreview Dental to have some crown work done. I ended up moving away to southern California and my permanent crown broke. I decided to have to it re-done back in SF as it would be done for free as it happened under a year. I have had two trips to SF for the temp and and permanent crown. I came up the second time to get my permanent crown put the other day and I left with a bitter feeling in my stomach. When she was trying to fit the new crown in place (upper tooth), SHE DRILLED MY BOTTOM HEALTHY TOOTH TO MAKE THE CROWN FIT! I was shocked at this and it seemed to be just pure laziness. I dont even know what would give a dentist the idea to drill a perfectly normal tooth to make a crown fit...and now that tooth is sensitive and I'm going to have to see another dentist to see how to help protect it. I have no idea what in the hell she was thinking. Im worried that that pain will intensify and I will now have to get a possible root canal done on my tooth THAT WAS PERFECTLY FINE. I have honestly thought about taking legal action but I know that would require too much work and they would have to examine my crown as evidence, possibly take it off. I just hope I am able to find a way to protect it for the future. I have no idea why she thought it was OK to drill and shave my healthy tooth to make her job easier....it disgusts me that she will continue her practice. I'm just thankful that this wasn't a more important doctor that made a careless alteration. It makes me sick, the continuous pain from the shaved tooth, I can only imagine it will get relieved by a root canal... read more

In short, it's a very modern facility with a great, caring staff. The quality of their work seems excellent so far (I've been there about 5 times). Not a whole to complain about with this place. I have had no problems emerge from any of the work they've done, and they've always fixed whatever was bothering me. After a root canal, my Dr. Piccolotti called me later that day to see how I was feeling. I really appreciated that. Of course just about any dental procedure is going to cost a chunk of change. They've been really great about setting up a payment plan that works for me. They even give you estimates including insurance prices before your visit. They're also a tech-savvy place. I get emails and texts to remind me of my appointments, which is great for me. They also have flat-screen TV's that they can extend to right in front of you, with a library of movies and cartoons for you to watch while they get all-up-in-your mouth. This is a very high tech, high quality dental office staffed by friendly, helpful professionals. I had numerous issues that required several visits recently. I appreciated the insurance/financial planner who could give me the lowdown before I selected how many expensive, painful procedures I'd submit to. The pain was reduced significantly by the delicate work of my new dentist: Dr. Michael Nguyen. He is so talented, understands my weird life-long dental phobic cringing, and has a real calming affect ;) I actually like a dentist. Whooda thought? Nguyen did really good, thorough work - and I can't imagine ever changing dentists - even if I were to relocate around the Bay Area. I never waited more than five minutes for an appointment. Since the moment I made the appointment my feeling towards this clinic kept going down until to the point I rushed out of the clinic and will not return! Nevertheless, I have to give credit to the booking, it was fast and easy. Other than that, nothing was good right at the point I stepped into the clinic. My name was recorded grossly wrong.The equipment used to clean my teeth was broken, the water kept shooting to my face and cloth. No one had any interest of what I really wanted. What they did was pushing whatever treatment they could think of and asked me commit. Come on! For young children, you cannot beat Vafi: flavored gloves, DVD choices while getting worked on, happy energy, toys in the waiting room. Great! We've also seen her husband/partner for both kids and adults. They can refer you to another relative who is excellent with root canal work. Excellent! ShoreView has gone the extra mile for us on several occaisions - from flexible payment plans; to letting me in on a Saturday to attend to my child's fall emergency ON THE SPOT, when they were in street clothes simply showing the office to a family member! From start to finish, Shoreview Dental is the perfect pediatric dental experience. Loved it so much, thinking of moving myself there, too. Dr. Vafi is the pediatric specialist and has a magical way with kids. We took our 3-year-old twins in for their first dental exam on the recommendation of a close friend who lives in Pacifica. Shoreview Dental has a special kids' room with flavored gloves, stickers, cool sunglasses, a video screen (Alvin & the Chipmunks was a big hit). She approaches the exams with very few expectations beyond counting teeth, and we were AMAZED at how our kids both hung out for the full cleaning. FULL: count, scrape, clean, polish, flouride (brushed on with a little brush; not the goopy trays of our childhood). And, they have a rockin' toy box from which to choose a post-treatment toy. We called for our appt., rec'd. advance new-patient paperwork within a day, arrived on time, and were taken on time. The office is just off the Palmetto/Manor Drive exit in north Pacifica. We live in Bernal Heights, and in just 16 minutes we were parked (free) in front of the offices. Far easier than schlepping across San Francisco. Really, the practice is amazing. Courteous. On-time. From the time I called, to the time my appointment ended I was very impressed by the staff and Dr. I was able to be seen at a time where I didn't have to miss work and they made sure I understood everything that was being told to me during my appointment.
