I wouldn't say this is the best or nicest Food Lion I've been inside, but it did the trick and had…read morethe essentials that we needed. They didn't have a large deli area with grab and go food items like I had hoped to find but we made due and got some cheese, chips and crackers, and some salad bagged mixes to have for lunch in our room before a nap. Food Lion is the only grocery store of Cape Charles and basically the main hub for everything in the town. Cape Charles doesn't have a chain drug store like a CVS or Walgreens (which nearly made this city girl pass out), so for anything you need, you can count on going here. The makeup section is quite literally just a very slender few rows of items that's heavily picked over. But, again, this is a Food Lion. You're probably here for food (but if you forgot to pack something, pray to Jesus you can find something here to suffice). We purchased some groceries for our few days in Cape Charles and were able to find everything we needed, including a few housemade pasta salads and a fried chicken. The store is very organized and clean and surprisingly big for this tiny town. This grocery store will get you through your weekend trip the way it did for us!

First off, yeah, they know lots of folks are going to want alcohol, and I think half of the aisle endcaps displayed something alcoholic. While they had a lot of classic and domestic products, they do offer a decent amount of local beer, wine, and pre-mixed cocktails (even though the Untappd app said the local beer I was looking for wasn't sold anywhere in a 25 mile radius, Island Foods had it!). We came the week of Pony Penning, and the store makes a couple dozen cakes (see picture) to celebrate the occasion. The produce aisle is small, but they have enough that you could get a decent variety of fruits and vegetables for your stay. There's a pretty decent selection of meats here. I don't remember seeing too much non-frozen seafood, but I imagine it's hard to compete with the fresh catch with specialty fish markets on the island. I was pleasantly surprised to find several Gardein products, which meant vegetarian Child #1 could have some imitation meats and seafood if he wanted a protein similar to what the rest of his omnivorous family would get. Things are pricey. Inflation's here to stay and it's a touristy beach town. Considering that, it's not too bad. The folks at the register were very friendly. Whatever foodstuffs you're looking for, it's a good bet that Island Foods has it.

Obviously it's more expensive than what you're used to back home as this is both an island and a tourist town, but that was to be expected.

It's a quaint little shop where you can buy fresh seafood, groceries, as well as different pastries and other dishes at the deli counter. I was originally in the mood for an Italian sandwich, but after speaking with the employee working the counter, I got a Shrimo Po' Boy because he said "The way we make em here, you won't find anywhere else." After one bite, I realized exactly what he meant; the shrimp were so fresh that I just knew they were caught straight out of the Cheseapeake Bay that same morning. I was also a fan of the thinly sliced French fries. I got a lemon square to eat after my sandwich, and it was also so good that I grabbed a slice of rainbow cake to go. The rainbow cake was good, but a tad dry, so definitely go for the lemon square if you're looking for a dessert here. All in all, the beach market is a great stop for anybody looking for a quick bite to eat or to support a local grocer in Cape Charles.

They served tasty and hearty corn and crab chowder. Growing up, I was a sucker for old-school steak fries. These are not them. They may appear to be fat steak fries at first glance, but they're better. Just a wide as steak fries but sliced ribbon-thin and very well seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and maybe a little parmesan. And if you enjoy a thick fat Italian sub, this is it. The bread was a crusty ciabatta roll. What made the difference for me on this Italian sub was that it was nicely toasted... holy smokes! The Beach Market is, indeed, a market, too. If you have a refined tastes in wine and other food delicacies do not miss out!
