I just moved to the Illinois Valley in July, so I don't have any loyalty to Shop Smart, but it was…read morehard to ignore the locals complaining about how Grocery Outlet moved into town and chopped down the most beloved tree in order to build their parking lot. I also often find it kind of gross when a business chooses to move right next store to a business that sells the exact same things. Still, I've managed to overcome these obstacles and enjoy my experiences at Gross Out. Although Shop Smart is still needed, as GO doesn't have everything you need for a balanced diet, their prices are truly out of this world. Things in Cave Junction tend to be a bit on the pricey side (Shop Smart regularly charges double the prices of other stores for basic goods like milk, eggs, and veggies) but GO charges what I've seen them charges in Grants Pass and Crescent City. I've heard rumors that it's easy to accidentally buy something rotten or expired while shopping there, but I haven't personally had that experience. Another reason I enjoy shopping at GO as opposed to the other one is the way I'm treated. At GO, checking out it easy and friendly; when I shop at the other place, I'm often waiting up to five minutes to check out--even if no one else is on line. At GO, I've had extended conversation with employees on every trip; at the other place I feel like I'm an inconvenience. As weird as it feels to give any kind of grocery store five stars, I would have done just that for Grocery Outlet. However, I'm the type of person who likes to go shopping almost every day to get snacks, lunch, and dinner for that day. I have to be at work at 8, and when I pass through CJ at 730 Grocery Outlet still isn't open. They would easily get double the money they get from me (and from at least six other folks I've spoken to who have actual jobs) if they opened only an hour early.

Ray's Food Place - Hey Rays! How much longer are you going to let this abandoned trailer sit there? People going in and out of it all day and night!

As I said before, it's the only store in Selma so don't expect much. It's completely rundown and in many ways disgusting it looks like it has not been maintained in anyway in about 25 years. In many ways I'm surprised it still passes health inspection. Also, don't expect them to have what you need , they are often sold out of many common things like water, milk, soda, eggs, basic fruits, and vegetables and just about any basic necessity you might think of needing. But don't worry because if you are looking for alcohol, they will always have plenty of it! If you are thinking of stopping in there just to get cash back think again. They often stop their cashback policy, depending on how the manager feels that day. Despite the fact that it's the only place within 10 miles to actually get cash they don't care. They routinely change their cashback amount From $25-$200 and often will tell you that they are unable to give cash back because they are told by corporate not to call for additional cash deliveries. They know they have this little small community hostage, and they don't care. Be prepared and by your necessities in another community.
