I went here after having a rough week. My server, Isaiah, was EXCELLENT. He was so kind and welcoming. This is genuinely the first time I have ever written a review for any restaurant and he deserves it. The food was spectacular. The head chefs were amazing and one of them came to speak to me personally. She was so sweet. I will be back because Isaiah and the restaurant as a whole allowed me to feel comfortable during a hard time. Also, even though I was there after closing, there was no rush. I made a reservation on table. They called me the day of the reservation to confirm. When I arrived, I was immediately seated. The hostess was kind, offering compliments, and we chatted. I spoke about my experience on a food tour and how I was served a quesadilla during our "culinary experience". She was flabbergasted especially considering I was there traveling for a solo for a personal celebration. She told me they would take care of me and THEY DID. My food was amazing! 5/5 Service 5/5 I didn't enjoy the butter shrimp dish, there were 5 small pieces of shrimp, lots of rice, and it had an unexpected sweet taste. They took it off my tab, the waiter suggested another option, the chef came out to chat with me, and they comped my replacement meal. They truly outdid themselves and I haven't experienced service that good in years. Thank you to everyone I came in contact with during my visit. I have determined and come to expect that this is the norm in almost every restaurant within the USA. It is just the way it is unfortunately. We came here for dinner with reservations, and the host took us directly to our table. The restaurant was a bit loud, and the lighting was on the dim side, so it was a little hard to read the menu good thing we can use our phone's flash light. Our server, Chris, was knowledgeable about the menu and often checked on us to make sure everything was good. The food came pretty quickly, and we didn't feel rushed. This place offers a variety of Japanese dishes. For dinner, we had wagyu gyoza (with handmade dumpling skins), the hand roll A5 beef tartare, Otoro 25 (which we highly recommend), karaage chicken, which was okay but a bit flavorless, uni toastettes, and the must-order Nagoya mazesoba ramen noodles, which were cooked perfectly to my preference. We also had the shaved ice, which was very refreshing and delicious, and the masa apple pocket (I don't remember the exact name, but it looked like a hot pocket). Dinner and drinks added up quickly because most of the dishes were tapas-sized, with the exception of the ramen. Overall, it's worth visiting for a date-night kind of dinner. read more

all i could say was "wow" after each bite. the freshness, the authenticity, all the food was absolutely delicious. we started off with the edamame and the fries which were both cooked to perfection. the fries had such a good seasoning on them and the sauce that came with it was a 10/10. i got the dumplings (9/10) and the crab fried rice (7/10) as the mains. for drinks, i got a lemon drop and a lime drop, both so refreshing. the service was AMAZING, shout out to Halle! the place was such a vibe. good music, Studio Ghibli playing on the tvs, and the lighting, perfect for pictures. i 100% recommend this place! read more

I went here for dinner with friends and we had such a lovely time! First of all the ambience is so nice, it's dimly lit and has a cozy feel with an open kitchen! I loved the vibe that they saw and it's the perfect place for dinner. Our server was really kind, and everyone who we encountered was super friendly and welcoming, which I really value at a high-end restaurant! We started with the edamame, chicken skewers and fries, which were all SO yummy. The edamame and fries had a delicious seasoning on them and it was just what I was looking for it. For our entrées, we got the Japanese curry, the regular curry and vegetable curry which were good. I do wish the veggie curry had more vegetables and a bit more flavor bc I felt like it was mostly noodles and a pretty thick broth but still good. We visited Skokudo during Charleston's restaurant week so we were able to try a bit of everything. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were great! We tried the shishito peppers (really good and super good snack), the tuna crudo (SO good and fresh), and pho and crab fried rice. The pho and fried rice were very good but also very rich. I should've ordered something a little lighter to break it up. The ube tart and the miso caramel soft serve were really good! I would go back for the soft serve alone! The restaurant is beautiful and the perfect spot for date night or a fancy girls night. It's dark and moody and a great selection of bar, booth and high top seating. read more

This year's Restaurant Week experience was spectacular. This was my first time at @shokudochs and the vibe was very inviting thanks to the amazing staff. The restaurant week menu had so many options to choose from. It was a 4-course meal for $50. The edamame was a table favorite. I didn't even get a pic of my crudo because it was so good. Words cannot express the magnificence of the meal we enjoyed this evening at Shokudo. From the moment we walked in, the host warmly greeted us, and you could immediately FEEL the love for the cuisine in the atmosphere. Every single person working tonight expressed excitement about something on the menu, which is so encouraging when you're dining at a restaurant for the first time. We got to the restaurant early for our reservation, so we sat at the outside bar. The bar manager walked us through the cocktail list, passionately telling us about the techniques and curated spirits used on their menu. Each signature cocktail we ordered was unique, thoughtful, and well-balanced. After we sat at the table, we were introduced to the menu with stellar recommendations from our server, Ashleigh. She was incredible, and guided us through the experience with knowledge and, yet again... genuine passion for the food. Each course was expertly executed, well balanced, and left us feeling grateful for having experienced it. I feel like there has been some chatter about Shokudo since it opened, but not NEARLY enough for the quality of the meal we just had. This is a must-visit when you are downtown,l. Shokudo has only been open a little over two months, and it's already made a huge impression on me. I first visited during Restaurant Week and was blown away by the well-priced, thoughtfully curated menu. I loved it so much that I went back two more times in the same week -- three visits total, which says everything. The food is outstanding and incredibly original. Over the course of those three dinners, we sampled the edamame, shishito peppers, shaka shaka fries, karaage chicken, pork gyoza, crudo, tartare, bok choy, pork ribs, wild boar, pork katsu, ube meringue pie, sesame cake, apple pie and miso caramel soft serve. Every single dish was memorable -- bold flavors, high-quality ingredients, and presentation that was truly over the top. You'd think with all that food I would've taken pictures... but nope. Next time, I promise. Just trust me -- it looked as good as it tasted. The service was just as impressive as the food. Everyone was wonderful, and by our third visit we specifically requested Matt, who took great care of us and made the experience even better. Shokudo is a very unique Japanese restaurant, offering dishes you don't see everywhere and executing them beautifully. I honestly can't say enough good things about the creativity, quality, and consistency here. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu. The play here is to order a bunch of different small plates and share amongst yourself and others. Although this leads to a pricier bill, it doesn't diminish the quality of the food. I had seen a few of my friends posting about Shokudo so we booked a double date night for Sunday! When we arrived, we were promptly seated at our table. The restaurant is a little dark and a little loud but what downtown isn't these days? I also know when I go downtown I'm going to be paying downtown prices, so I knew what I was walking into (plus, labor and food costs are sky high these days!) Our server was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. I don't recall his name, but he gave us a very thorough breakdown of the menu. We decided to order the "shake shaka" fries, karaage chicken namban, wagyu gyoza, "bbq" pork rib, toro beef, and the a-5 beef tartare temaki. I think what threw me the most was that the "slightly large" plates came out first, before the hand rolls and smaller plates. I don't have a problem with things coming out as they are ready, I think I just was surprised. Again, not enough to never come back. The skewer and the hand roll were really tasty (I do wish the hand roll had been assembled but honestly, I get it - the presentation was A+). The ribs were extremely flavorful and a much larger portion that I was expecting, but I did have to eat around some weird fatty sections. I found the dumplings to be a little mediocre considering their cost - I feel like a sauce would have really elevated them to the next level. Both the karaage and the fries were cooked perfectly and my husband loved them. For dessert, we went with the fried s'mores and the golden arches hand pie. Honestly, 10/10 all around. I had seen the pie so I knew what to expect but the s'mores dish was a surprise and I wanted to lick the plate (don't be scared of the matcha - it's just dusted on lightly). That apple pie though...I need them to sell in a multipack because I want it DAILY. One of our friends doesn't eat seafood so she felt the menu was a little limiting for her, but we checked it out in advance and found some things that worked. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other skewers (seriously, the beef was SO tender and amazing) and obviously I'll get more dessert. A solid addition to downtown, for sure. read more

Wow, this is our new favorite place in Charleston! The ambience was classy, the food was spectacular, and the service was impeccable. We were impressed with the server, Matt's, knowledge and the swarm of service from the other servers surrounding during our meal. It was Michelin-level with the most wonderfully unique flavors and presentation. The Toro beef skewer melts in your mouth, and be sure to try the honey cube desert! Let me just start off saying, "Praise to a restaurant that offers more than good food!" My husband and I decided to give this place a shot since we love Japanese inspired dishes. It's the week prior to Valentine's Day so we're excited to give this place a shot. We walk in around 4:00pm and was greeted promptly by the hostess. She lead the way to our table and informed us that our waitress Dasha would be serving us. As we waited, we perused the menus to get an idea of what we wanted to try. Dasha came shortly thereafter and gave us a clear and concise run down of the menu. We ordered the lamb shoulder and Shiitake mushroom skewer. AMAZING!!! Next we ordered the Japanese curry and the ramen. Both were equally delicious. If that wasn't enough, we ordered the beef tongue and more skewers. Excellent!! If you want to be impressed by Japanese inspired dishes and a great atmosphere, I'd highly suggest giving this place a shot! Hopefully we'll be back sometime soon. read more

We took all of her recommendations and all were perfect! The Fancy Oysters are a must have for a starter. The beef skewer melts in your mouth, and the desserts are top tier and so unique. The restaurant is well designed, and the vibes were relaxing with a city feel. Nothing else is like this in Charleston.
