I got my first 3 tattoos here between the ages of 18 - 20. I chose this place because one of the artists, NICK FLANAGAN, was friends with and had tattooed a lot of people I knew. He usually does traditional old school designs, Japanese art, and portraits but had no problem doing the little girly cherries and star I wanted all 3 times I went. I was extremely nervous the first time but Nick was very laid back and gentle and made my experience there wonderful... which is probably why I went back for 2 more and a piercing. Although Nick is the only person there that I have gotten work done by everyone else in the shop was awesome too! It's definitely been awhile since I've been there but I would not hesitate to get tattooed there again (and am actually planning on it soon!). read more

I like Shogun. My favorite artist is Jeff, he's done a handful of my tattoos. He's super friendly, very experienced and knowledgeable. I appreciate the time he takes to make sure you are happy a tattoo - during the sketching phase, sizing, placement and coloring. He's patient and really cares about his clients. My favorite piece he's done on me is a skeleton key which he shaded beautifully in black and gray with white highlights. I can't stop looking at it! I got my belly button pierced here back in 2000 when I was 18. The guy who pierced looked like a big surly biker type, but was actucally very sweet to me. He let my best friend sit with me & hold my hand during the procedure (it was my first piercing). My experience there was so positive that I went back in 2001 to get my tongue pierced. I have a small mouth & my tongue was difficult to pierce (the little "string" things that attach my tongue to the bottom of my mouth are a bit too far forward), The piercer was very patient, gentle, & he got the job done by piercing my tongue at a tiny bit of an angle. I stopped by there a few months ago with a friend to check the place out & it looks rennovated. Everyone was nice, but I didn't get any work done at that time. read more

This place is clean, and the people are down to earth, skilled, and professional. They charge fair prices too. When hunting for a shop to finally get my tattoo I decided to stop in after work after reading the great yelp reviews. I was immediately greeted by the owner, who handed me a book of fonts to flip through. Tom came over a few minutes later to book me an appointment for the following week with a standard deposit fee of $50. When I came for my appointment Tom was great. He made small talk but obviously picked up on the fact that when I'm getting inked I like to go through my own mental journey. When I stood up to leave I was fine, but I felt like I was going to faint as we walked into the hallway. He instantly swiveled a chair under me and handed me an orange soda. He was very kind about it and told me a few funny stories about other clients who had done it. The bottom line is that this place was clean and offered a selection of artists with impressive histories of work. The service was fast, and I was made comfortable. On top of that, the tat came out great and I didn't feel for a second like I was getting ripped off. Stop by Shogun for new ink if you're like me and you just want someone who knows what they're doing and who will make the process fast and as easy as possible. read more

Went in to try to ask if there was time to do a small tattoo or if I could book an appointment and was immediately cut off and not given any offers to book an appointment just starred blankly at. this is the second time this has happened to me but the shop was recommended by a friend so i gave them the benefit of the doubt which was a mistake. based off of the description given to my friend the man we spoke to was Jamie he was recognized for his rudeness. terrible customer service. the only reason i walked in for the appointment was because their website said online first time customers need to talk to someone in person and could not be booked via phone or email. read more

Let me start off by saying if you want a tattoo.. especially your first.. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! The place is very clean, the staff is wicked nice, and the job they do is beyond professional. I Thought about getting a tattoo for awhile, going through some personal life experiences I decided to say hell to it and start seeing which place would be best for me. I stopped into Shogun after bouncing around from a few other tattoo shops. I went in to ask a few questions (this was in mid November 2014, i spoke to Tom, who also did my tattoo. And I ended up with an appointment card in my hand for 12/16. He also did the tattoos for the Shutter Island movie, really cool dude. I've had my tattoo for almost 3 weeks. The healing process was quick and easy. (No scabbing and I had only minimal peeling of skin) $60 is the minimum for the shop, no matter how small the tattoo is. And like most places, they require some money down. ($50, which is refundable if you call ahead of time before your appointment) I would recommend for anyone who is looking for a place to get their first tattoo done to go to shogun. I will definitely be going back here in February for some more ink. read more

Shogun is honestly one of the only shops I'll go two. Every artist that works there do amazing work. The artist I specifically work with is Jeff O'Brien. So far I have gotten three pieces done by Jeff, and he is seriously so awesome. He drew out all of my pieces and they always came out better than I imagined them to come out. Jeff is a really friendly guy and it's awesome to shoot the shit with. He is very reasonably priced. I highly recommend him, but no matter what artist you go to you won't be disappointed. I decided after 10 years of rolling the tattoo idea around in my head, it was time. After some research on yelp and a review of some portfolios, I zeroed in on Shogun. I had no idea what to expect or how the consultation, pricing, or appointment was supposed to go. I'm grateful to the tattoo gods for pointing me to Shogun. I went with a print out of the drawing I wanted. Tom greeted me at the desk, asked me where I wanted it, how large, etc. He gave me what seemed like a reasonable price, but, being a tattoo novice, I didn't know whether to negotiate or not. After asking around, I discovered it was more than fair and that when you go to a reputable place with good artists, you don't want to nickel and dime it. Tom also said that he would charge extra for the lettering, which I was unsure about on the day of my first discussion with him, but that I could decide if I wanted it or not up until the day of my tattoo appointment. I thought I might feel judged for being a tattoo virgin, but that wasn't the case. Tom laid out the process in a quick, matter of fact way that made me feel comfortable. He did the stencil and placement. I took a peek in the mirror and I guess looked unsure about its placement on my torso, but didn't say anything. Tom recognized my uncertainty in an instant and said, "Are you sure? We can move the stencil, no problem, but we can't move the tattoo." As one who has a hard time speaking up, I AM SO GLAD he was attentive and experienced enough to catch that. The tat is on my ribs and, not going to lie, it hurt like a mother. BUT, Tom regularly checked in on me, took necessary breaks, etc. He didn't talk my ear off, which I like and respect. However, I'm sure if I wanted to talk throughout, he would have obliged. My skin is really sensitive, so I had nightmares about getting an awful skin eating infection. My ear piercings barely stay open after 15 years. But, about 6 weeks later, the tattoo is healing beautifully. There was no scabbing, flaking, whatever, the color is sharp, no line bleeding. I'm really pleased with the tat and the experience. Overall, awesome place. The only reason for the 4 is that on the day I walked in to make the appointment, I waited at the desk for over 10 minutes before anyone came out or acknowledged me. Maybe this is part of the laid back atmosphere of the tattoo industry, but for a novice, I almost took it as a sign that I was not meant to be tattooed. Otherwise, A+ job. Will return ! read more

So, this place is actually now called Shogun Tattoo and is located across the street but I couldn't find a listing for the new spot. I went here yesterday to get my second tattoo. It was located on the left side of my lower back and consisted of three flowers (two roses and a lilac). I was a bit nervous as my first tattoo was a simple outline of a cross on my shoulder that took all of fifteen minutes. This one took about 45 minutes. It was fine though, of course it hurt but the tattoo artist (Jeff) was very sure to keep me posted on what he was doing, I couldn't see it since it was on my back, and make sure I was doing okay. He also did a good amount of work ahead of time to neaten up the design and make sure I was happy with it. The price was reasonable too (much better than the small fortune I paid at a pricier shop in Cambridge). Also, I didn't have an appointment and was able to be done right away. Well worth the half an hour drive. read more

I would drive for days to get a tattoo done at Shogun by any of the artists there because they are all amazing. I have 3 tattoos(two wrist and one big side tattoo) that were done by 3 of the artists here at different times. Nick, Tom and Brian. My tattoos still look amazing and vibrant. I have witnessed every one of the artists there including the owner Jamie and I have not seen better work anywhere in this area. I HIGHLY recommend going here if you want a great tattoo and fair pricing. As for that ridiculous review that says they had to wait 10-15 minutes and they didn't pick up the phone blah blah. You are an idiot, was this your first time getting a tattoo? Just got a large dragon tattoo done by Matt in several sessions. I am SO happy I found him. He just happened to be available the day that I walked in to check the place out, we discussed my idea, and within a day or two he sent me an awesome email drawing and we set up an appointment for the following weekend to get started. The whole process was laid back and easy. This was not my first tattoo, but it was definitely the most enjoyable tattoo experience I've had because he was so friendly and always made sure I was comfortable with everything. In addition, I felt he charged me a very fair price given the time and care he took and the quality of his work. I went in wanting a colorful and detailed piece of artwork done, and he truly exceeded my expectations in how it came out. I worked with Tom. I told him my idea during a face to face consult then emailed him some pictures of what I wanted. We emailed back and forth a little to nail down the details. When I arrived for my appointment he had a great outline for me. I told him my ideas for color and he made a few suggestions. Being that he is the pro, I told him I would trust him to make it look good. He took my idea and made it ten times better than I had ever dreamed. Warning! This review is limited to my customer experience with the business and further limited to the appointment/consultation process. You see, my experience with Shogun Tattoo left such a sour taste in my mouth that I went somewhere else. 1. A complicated consultation and appointment process seems to be a bit of a roadblock. I live an hour away. Should it really be such a huge favor to allow me to call to make an appointment for the actual tattooing, rather than a consultation appointment AND then a tattoo appointment? 2. Someone really should be at the front desk. This isn't a huge thing but someone there to give at least an initial friendly hello is a good thing. 3. When a customer is finally greeted - it might be nice to not make said customer feel like she is an imposition. No, really. Answering questions in monosyllables, making her dig for more information about how to make an appointment and when people will be available, making a face upon seeing the design and then sighing... these are all bad signs. We left after being told "Call tomorrow. I'll try to remember to tell the other artist you should be allowed to make an appointment by phone." Guess what? Just down the street there is another tattoo parlor. Sure, they charged more, they didn't give us a choice of artists, and the artist we did get barely said two words to me much LESS was helpful about walking me through the experience. But they had a receptionist that smiled and made me feel like my business was welcome. And I didn't have to jump through hoops to get seen. My design wasn't that complicated. So, the choice was easy and it's one I'd make again. A little friendliness and active interest go a LOONG way. read more

Got my scroll done on my arm with my daughters name, her birthday, and daddy's little girl underneath it. Looks amazing. Tom has not lost a step, and it came to $100 less than what I was planning so that was a pleasant surprise. The interior still looks just as classy and professional as always and Tom takes appts. on Saturdays now so that really came in handy due to my work schedule (last time he only did walk-ins on Saturdays. One thing I really appreciated is that when Tom asked me how much I wanted to spend, I told him the most I wanted to spend was $500, and while most tattoo artists would have said okay, and then charged $500 knowing that's the amount I had on me, not Tom, I tell him $500 is my limit and he does this immaculate piece and says "I'm just gonna charge you $400" (and did extra shading at no extra charge). I'm telling you, if you are wondering where to get your first tat, or looking to switch artists, go to Shogun. Thank me later. read more

Let me tell you something about this place. They have the most horrendous customer service. I couldn't even imagine getting a tattoo here. I had to wait for over 15 minutes before being acknowledged. In the time that I was waiting, I called the place TWICE and NOBODY even bothered to come out and answer the phone. How unprofessional. Then, when I finally do get someone out to help me, they are rude and obnoxious. He manages to successful piss me off by yelling at me while tapping away on his phone. What. A. Joke. He doesn't even give me the respect of looking at me like a normal person. I should've known matter and left after that but I tried to give this guy another chance. When I go to make an appointment, he tells that I'm better off just walking in on a random day and there will be some random tattoo artist who will be around to do it for me. Are you serious? That's exactly what I want to hear about something that's going to be on me forever. Uh, no. What surprises me the most is that I got this kind of treatment from the owner of this place. Excuse me? That's how you treat your customers? Thankfully, I went down the street to Masterpiece. I got prompt and professional help from the workers and was able to walk out with a wonderfully done tattoo.
