First and definitely last. We came in during a late weekday, was craving for a bento box. Upon entering, the smell of cleaning products hit me hard. That should have been a sign for us to turn around but I was hungry. Well, my stomach did the deciding for me and it backfired. I ordered the salmon bento which came with salad and soup. We also ordered two rolls which my hubby ate and for app, wakame salad. As we waited, I heard someone SNEEZED in the kitchen and one of the male workers goes "ewwwww!" and laughed. Man, I was hoping and praying that wasn't near our food. I was so disgusted I wanted to walk out after that. -.- Food: Wakame salad - nothing special. Room temperature. Tasted old. I've had Wakame salad many times and they were always cold and some even amp up the flavor just a bit. This was not good but again, I was starving and I love Wakame salad. Stockton and Tiger rolls - hubby says it was decent and nothing to rave about. He finished the rolls cause he too, was hungry. Salmon Bento - this got me checking every salad that I'm getting from all sushi restaurants now; especially in Stockton. Never in my life of ordering a bento box would I encountered something black with legs in my salad. I was thoroughly checking and it looked fine in the beginning but as I went to investigate some more, I noticed something gooey and black (see photos). At that point I stopped eating my salad all together and investigated the soup. Thankfully I didn't see anything odd and with legs. Next, I took a bite into the rice and....as I was chewing I felt a thin somewhat like string in my mouth...welp, it was a short hair. And I think I swallow part of it cause as I continue to spit the hair out, pieces of it were on the napkin. That bento box costed me $18 and I wasn't going to have food go to waste so I inspected the salmon and the california roll so I wouldn't waste food. I hate wasting food! Salmon was dry. California roll was decent and probably was the most edible. I would have given this place 0 stars if I could but the waitress/waiter were nice even though they barely checked on us. Overall from the sneezing in the kitchen to the hair and the mysterious black gooey substance...never again. read more

The food was actually really good, and I enjoyed my meal. Unfortunately, the customer service left a lot to be desired. Every time our food was brought to the table, we said "thank you," but no one ever responded, not even with a simple "you're welcome." When it was time to pay, the employee helping us was dismissive and came across as rude, even though we were polite throughout the entire visit. Good food can only make up for so much when the service makes customers feel unwelcoming. I hope they work on providing friendlier, more attentive customer service. read more

We asked for the chef to surprise us with a few rolls. We told him what we were not too much fan of and he did listen. To start He brought a sample platter of appetizers with calamari and short ribs they were excellent. Then the rolls came and boy! They were all great, fresh and so beautifully decorated that it was a shame to eat them The taste was great, so fresh and some of them had some spice to it that made them special. We ordered the teriyaki chicken, salad, soup, edamame, a Stockton Roll, Rainbow Roll, Crunchy Dragon Roll, and a Spicy Tuna Hand Roll. Everything was fresh and flavorful, and the portions were great. 5/5 for Stockton, 4/5 overall. Ordered the 6pc Salmon Sashimi, Zippy Salmon Roll, Philly Roll and the Volcano Roll. The total was about $52 after taxes not including tip. The salmon sashimi was actually very fresh and decently priced! I'd recommend getting this. The Zippy Salmon Roll (inside: shrimp tempura, asparagus tempura, imitation crab, top: seared salmon, shrimp, sliced lemon, unagi sauce, spicy mayo, sriracha, tobiko) was my favorite roll because of the size of salmon on top. The Philly Roll (inside: smoked salmon, avocado and cream cheese) had a little bit too much cream cheese vs. the fish but it was still good. My date chose the Volcano Roll (inside: shrimp tempura, imitation crab, toasted panko, top: spicy mayo, unagi sauce) because he said he really liked it the last time he got it but it turned out he ended up liking it the least this time because of the other 2 rolls I chose! I would definitely pass on this roll, it's way too plain and doesn't have any fish. Good fish to rice ratio and prices aren't bad! It's also clean inside and they played good music when I was there. This is the, celebrate your family member by having their bday dinner here type of place. I have been a customer of this shogun for years through all of the management changes. I have become quite attached to some owners where others have made me swear I'd never return. These guys have been here for 3 years now and they are like family. We've come in with a party of 2 and a party of over 20. We have celebrated birthdays and graduations and farewell parties. I should have paid more attention to its low stars I made a point of being very clear with the waiter that I cannot take any spiciness in my food. I asked him please to not let me order anything spicy (some restaurants make the same dish spicy while others do not). I explained even ground pepper is too hot for me (it really hurts my mouth) I ordered the Poke Tuna starter. When it came the seaweed was so spicy it burned my mouth. I told the waiter and he looked at it carefully and said "oh. It has Chilli Oil on it" and took it away with no apology but ok he was busy. I also ordered a non spicy roll (hold the spicy stuff) and that was fine. Toward the end of our dinner the waiter said they were working on a replacement!! When it arrived I took one bite and the pain exploded in my mouth. I told the waiter it was hotter than the first time. He just took it away with no comment. No apology, nothing!! I confirmed with him he HAD told the chef about my need for no spiciness in any of my food, so I had a little word with the chef who made it, to find out what happened. He tried to tell me it was not spicy!! I told him how painful it made my mouth. Then he said that it had to be the seaweed!! Ok. So if that is the case TELL me about that when I order and ask to be told if anything is spicy. Then he reiterated that it was NOT spicy. This place is small but sushi is on point. This time I had the bento box with chicken katsu. Katsu was cooked to perfection and great price on the lunch menu which comes with a roll. The service and friendly atmosphere was only matched by the delicious meals we ordered. I had the baked Lion King roll. It was good enough for a Thanksgiving dinner. Our other dish was grilled mackerel, a dish that we use to determine the quality of a restaurant serving Japanese cuisine. It was delicious. For an inexpensive dinner date with charm that we don't find at most restaurants, this was a real treat. We are returning tomorrow to try Shabu Shabu. We came here for dinner on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was a little under 25% full so we were quickly seated. The rolls were good. I really enjoyed the UOP roll. Service was fairly attentive and they checked on us frequently. I had to ask for chopsticks and napkins since our table only had two settings and we were a group of three. It looked pretty clean inside, but I was unsettled to see lipstick on my water cup after I had already drank from it (luckily from the opposite end!) Coursing was a bit off. All but one roll was served in a reasonable time but the House Roll took a lot longer and that was what my husband ordered for dinner. I would consider returning but it didn't "wow" me. read more

Shogun is our family's new favorite Japanese restaurant! I visited once several years ago and was unimpressed; but we starting visiting Shogun again about a year ago, after their new management took over. They have the best California roll, and at a bargain price. Their bento box with teriyaki salmon or chicken is a perfect balanced meal. The salmon skin is perfectly crisped without drying the meat out, and the salad dressing is delicious. Salmon nigiri is my personal favorite sushi, and their sushi salmon is consistently tender and flavorful. Customer service is top notch too. On one of our first visits, we ordered a baked roll for my son without realizing it had a sauce he was allergic to. They gladly remade the roll and left the other roll for the table at no charge. I was craving sushi on a Monday - and most ethnic restaurants are closed on Mondays. I am so glad we found Shogun! We checked out Yelp and saw that their prices are about the same as other Japanese restaurants in the Stockton/Lodi area. So we took a chance, and I am glad we did! Hubby and I ordered our usual lunch bentos, with sashimi as the second item . I was a bit disappointed when the server said they would charge me an extra $3 if I wanted my sashimi to be all salmon. But Hubby compromised and offered to swap his salmon for my whitefish and/or tuna. So all OK. Here is my feedback on each item tyhat came with my bento box - Miso soup - Shogun's miso soup is a bit watered down compared to other Japanese restaurants we've been to. I assum that maybe their usual clientele does not like to strong umami flavor of miso. After all, miso is not an expensive ingredient. They do have a good amount of seaweed and tofu in the soup so I am OK with it. Salad - The first time we ate at Shogun, they probably accidentally poured too much dressing on my salad. But other visits, it was perfect. They give you a lot more salad than others. So am happy about that. The dressing was just right in flavor. Asian enough without being too fishy or sesame-y. Grilled salmon (yes, I like salmon) - I always ask to skip the teriyaki sauce as I love the flavor of salmon. They got it right. The serving size was good enough for lunch portion. Rice - White rice came in a bowl. Perfectly steamed and easy to pick up with chopsticks. (Gotta use chopsticks when picking up sashimi.) Sashimi - Very fresh, not fishy taste or aroma at all. Plus, unlike other places where it seems the sashimi just came out of the freezer, Shogun sashimi was just the right temperature. The salmon was as sweet as salmon should be. In fact the tuna sashimi was very good also. I tried a bite of the whitefish. But I can't be the judge of that since I usually do not like raw whitefish. But Hubby says it is also quite good. Finally, the bento box came wiht 2 slices of oranges, sweet and juicy. Just right to end my meal. I think if I have anything to complain about, it is only that they do not have low sodium soy sauce. But everything else was perfect. Even the location was quite convenient to us for lunches - cuz we work from our home in Lodi and Shogun is located at the border of Stockton and our town. We'll be back again on Monday! read more
