I have to admit, reading and scrolling through the various reviews, it is quite interesting to see so many 5 and 4 star reviews mixed in with so many scathing 1 star reviews... My initial reaction is that I can't help but think some people were just having a bad day and needed to articulate such vehement dissatisfaction with their Shoe Savers service to attempt to over-compensate for everything else that must have gone wrong that day. Or there are just some VERY unhappy, vengeful people in our fine city...
I intro my review with that because I think it is completely relevant to note that before you go to Shoe Savers, you need to do/know the following:
1. Put on your thicker skin, you're coming here to have your shoes fixed, not make a BFF.
2. Check yourself in terms of how much you paid for your shoes (in some cases, Houston Shoe Hospital or an inferior place legitimately may be your better option)
and most importantly,
3. Be prepared to pay in cash upon pickup
Ok, so those are the three rules. Can we all agree on that? In terms of #1, I've never had any issues with the customer service or the attitude of Berry and his wife (terrible at names, she literally told me earlier today!) They have told me straight up "Oh we just hate patent leather", or "Ya, those spikes [on my CL's] aren't the best [i.e. Valentino's are better]", or "These are cheap and from China" (no offense to people from China, but I can tell in the quality of the red soles I have put on every pair of Louboutins that I own, that the product, craftsmanship, and durability of the ones Berry uses and has put on all my shoes is far superior to any other offered in Houston that I unfortunately used previously before finally discovering Shoe Savers).
As far as #2 goes, I also appreciate any time I have come in and he says, "No, I'm not touching that shoe, someone else repaired it before, it's not happening", or "No, I won't protect that suede, it's cheap, not worth your money (on Pella Moda's, so, not designer by my standards, or his, nor should they be)"
I know, I know, $200-300 for shoes is by no means cheap, and you want them to be your best, they may be your nicest shoes. Trust me, I love mine! But I also have Louboutins that were between $700 and $1700 new, as well as Valentino's, Manolos, Gucci, and Chanels, and there is a big difference in the quality of materials used in these shoes. And you'll be heartbroken at first with the honesty by Berry or his wife, both equally knowledgeable, but you'll appreciate it in the end when you didn't spend $50 on something that another place probably would have gladly done because you asked them to, thinking it made sense, but ultimately, doesn't do anything for the lifespan of the shoe, and thus, is a waste of money.
And for #3, if you can't afford to pay cash for a repair, could you even afford the shoes you bought originally that you're now bringing in for repair? I picked up two pairs today, one brand new for red soles, and another pair of CLs to have several spikes replaced that had fallen off (disappointing craftsmanship on that front if you ask me, so thank God Berry was willing to fix them, and honest about the fact they may fall off again, I get it) and in total, it was $95 to take preventive and corrective measures on about $2400 worth of shoes. Not bad in my book!! He also replaced the heel caps while I waited on another pair of CL's, no charge, and is going to do the heel caps and shine another pair of CL patent pumps (even though he hates patent LOL). I'll pick those up next Tuesday, his wife will call me when they're ready and tell me my total, which she'll kindly remind me is to be paid in cash. Shouldn't be a big shock when I walk in to pick them up and I have to pay cash.
I've been meaning to write this review for quite some time, so I certainly hope it has proved helpful for someone. If you're a Carrie Bradshaw at heart, Shoe Savers is your new best friend! Well not literally, see above, but you know what I mean :-) read more
