I have 30+ pairs of shoes; ranging from $300 to $1,500 new. I'm a shoe guy, I admit it and I've been bringing my shoes to Barry and Elon for 30 years. Yes, 30 years because they are undeniably the best. If you want better customer service, a lower price and lower quality, my suggestion is to go somewhere else. In all the years I've been coming to Shoe Savers, my shoes are always ready on time or early, they look better than I expected, and the quality/workmanship is unparalleled. When I was in my 20's and irresponsible, I'd leave my shoes there long after I was called to pick them up. After a month or so, they'd threaten to "throw them away or sell them". I was offended, but when I picked them up I was astounded at the workmanship, so I've never stopped coming back. When I was in my late 30's Barry told me he wouldn't work on my Cole Haan shoes because they were "crap and not worth his time or my money". He told me to stop buying Cole Haan because "their quality had gone to sh&t". I was proud of those shoes, but I was grateful that an expert gave me strait to the point, excellent advice without mincing words. He was right, by the way. Cole Haan quality has gone down the tubes. I was a loyal customer for 10+years. Currently charge $170-187.50 cash only for each pair of shoes to be resoled. Prices not published. Prices have almost tripled in last 3 years. QUALITY has gone way DOWN. Using cheaper materials than before. Shoes fall apart within a season's use. And not just the sole coming off or thinning but chunks of the heal coming off with sole. The work is NOT guaranteed EVER. Recently I paid more than $170 each to re-sole two pairs of sandals; sole came undone after a few uses (tread barely used). I took them back assuming i would be helped. WHOA what a nightmare, the owners spewed pure vitriol nonstop. Their arguments were "the materials have not been used for two years," and I was lying abt the amount of use. IT WAS SURREAL. I came into the shop today to get my shoes worked on, after talking with the first representative she was quick to mention the pricing and would only except cash. Then I proceeded to discuss with her pricing was not an issue and if you can just repair my shoes! She not too sure so she says let me grab a representative. Another man comes out and immediately tries to tell me the price will be twice as much as the first woman had discussed with me, (okayyyy*head scratch*)Then gives my shoes a look over and tries to say that this is something he cannot do. Again I asked him can you even repair just the heel of my shoes at the bottoms that he at first said yes to. THEY THREATENED TO THROW MY SHOES AWAY. I brought in a pair of Stella Mcartneys and Chanel heels that needed to be fixed. They were really rude which honestly I didn't care about till I said I was from out of town. The crazy wife proceeded to tell me that since I live in Austin that if I didn't pick up my shoes within a couple of weeks that they will throw away my shoes or sell them. Imagine that lol. I would've been in town within two weeks but having them threaten to throw away shoes that combined are $2,000, no thanks. Who cares if they are amazing at fixing shoes if in the end if you can't pick them up on time your shoes will end up in the trash. Also, it's crazy that they make you pre-pay before the job is done... normally you pay once you pick them up but it's very obvious from the way they work and the "cash only" thing that this place is very suspect. THE BUTCHER OF BISSONNET... Where do I begin?? Not just rude but crazy, doesn't accept credit cards, you don't get a receipt after the "work" is done, average to poor quality of materials, workmanship is AWEFUL. They ruined a pair of my Brooks Brothers (Alden) cordovan shoes. I came to this shop because of the reviews and I wanted to shop local. I had also heard of the rude and erratic behavior of the owners, and that they did not accept credit cards and thought how charming, sounds like old world craftsmanship... wrong. At first everything seemed OK, went there to replace the heels on my shoes, got a polite reception and they suggested that I should go ahead and have the soles replaced. Sounded reasonable, but I wanted to wait to have the soles replaced by the Alden shop in New England. Barry immediately starts to bad mouth the Alden Shop which has been around since the 1800's, this should have also been a warning sign. But I said ok, let's try local, and left my shoes. When my shoes were ready they called, I came by, brought cash and collected my shoes. When I got home, I noticed one shoe had slightly lower sides than the other, also one shoe had leather bunched up and wrinkled, one sole was also slightly longer than the other, and the shoes physically hurt when I put them on. I went back and asked Barry to take off the soles and heels and just return my money, I would send them off to the Alden shop and have them repaired at my cost. I was polite and showed the problems to Barry, but rather than accept that there MIGHT be an issue he just got offended. His wife then comes out and hysterically claims that this is the best work anywhere, that socialites come to them with the most expensive of shoes (I'm not making this up), that she would explain to me why the shoes are correctly repaired but that I could not possibly understand (Lady: they're shoes, not computers or rocket ships) I really thought I was in a bad dream at this point... My Brooks Brothers shoes ruined, I had paid $180 in cash but had no receipt and no credit card recourse, and I was being yelled at by some crazy lady apparently because I was not a "socialite" and I could not possibly comprehend how straps of leather are held together by nails and glue... I've since sent my shoes to the Alden shop for repairs (another $169), but at least they are professional, polite, and accept credit cards. I wish I had taken photos before for full effect of how badly damaged they were. I picked them up today and they look brand new! Well worth the price for high quality work. It's unfortunate that the bad reviews are simply bc Mr. Shoe Saver isn't seen as overly friendly. He was perfectly cordial and professional, and assured me that my shoes had many more miles left in them. His fairness and honesty, and ability to resuscitate 2 pair of $700 shoes for a fraction of the cost of replacing them, is far more important to me than whether or not he chooses to chit chat with customers. I trust their craftsmanship and experience because if they cannot do the work properly, they will tell me honestly. As far as the owners demeanor, I can only comment on my service which has alway been friendly and polite. The gentlemen is an artist with shoes and his wife has always been kind. As far as cash only, they are a small business that has to pay fees to all these credit card companies for charges made by credit cards. But after just a measly minute of being on the phone with this lady, I did. She was rude, cut me off, I could just feel her rolling her eyes at me on the phone, and was generally very displeasurable. Went into get 3 designer shoes fixed (Gucci, YSL and Valentino) so I was asking several question to better understand what they can do. He priced my first shoe and it was over $120. And because I kept asking about my other shoes he threw his hands up and said I'm sorry you're asking too many question. I can't fix your shoe, I'm gonna pass. What????! I wish I had a before picture to show how badly damaged my heels were when I brought them in BUT they were able to perfectly restore my poor YSL tribute heels after both taps and heel leather were destroyed as well as place a sole protector. Not only do they look brand new but they were ready for pick-up days before the date I was given. I received a warm greeting at drop-off and pick-up and can not thank them enough for saving my heels!!!! I will never take my shoes anywhere else. They did a below average job for twice the price. I took in a pair of Church's captoes for a resole. I think they charged me like $200 because I was to ignorant to realize what a ripoff this was. So I get the shoes back, they look great and not even two weeks into wearing them the soles start to look fuzzy on the sides and warp all over the place. In short, they used garbage products. Not to mention the psycho lady that runs the counter. When she told me they wouldn't work on shoes that had been recrafted by Allen Edmonds I knew she was delusional. I just left Barry's shop after he worked his wonders on a vintage Chanel flap and Chanel ballerina flats. The flap bag had oil stains and the flats are worn almost every day. After picking them up, the flap bag looks brand new and the stains are gone. I am sure I can get at least another 2 years from these flats now that they were re-soled. I have been bringing my shoes and purses to Barry for years on the advice of my trusted shoe salesperson at Saks. He does a phenomenal job every single time. He is honest in his assessment of what he can accomplish and whether the original product warrants the price of his services. His prices are more expensive than Houston Shoe Hospital, but he is definitely worth it. If you value your shoe and purse collection, go to Shoe Savers. I am a Houstonian who values quality craftsmanship and excellent service. You might find the former here, but you will NOT find the latter. As a small business owner I can't fathom how they manage to run their business. They are BEYOND RUDE, COMPLETELY INSULTING, and NOT WORTH YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. The first time I went into their shop a few years ago I got a really bad vibe from the male owner. Working with him was a younger man, perhaps his son, who was visibly fearful of the owner. The owner was yelling at him, scolding him publicly, and being generally abusive towards him. I left my shoes there and vowed to never go back, but made the MISTAKE of returning recently. The second time I went in, I was initially greeted by an absolutely psychotic woman, and then referred to the abusive owner. They made fun of the work that had previously been done on my shoes and made me feel guilty about wearing my shoes. They came up with some random, cockamamie, inflated price and told me that I had to pay in cash before I left because they didn't trust me to return to pay them. They also made me feel that the value of the owner's time was more valuable than my integrity. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT HOUSTON IS A BIG CITY, WITH MANY SKILLED CRAFTSMEN. When I needed to get some designer shoes repaired, I called Neiman's and they directed me to Shoe Savers. I will never go back because not only did it take weeks to get my shoes back, but the owner/manager is INCREDIBLY rude. It must just be his disposition, but I can only think of a couple times in my entire life where I've received such horrible customer service. My shoes came back looking good, but the man working there needs to hire a friendly face to be his customer service representative. The only reason this place gets 2 stars is because the work was well done, but I just can't get over rude, condescending, and curt service...especially when I'm handing over 1 pair of shoes that cost $800. I have now switched to the Bellaire Shoe Repair, and they are so nice, family run, and have done an incredible job with my designer and non-designer shoes at half the price. read more

I cannot speak to the quality of their work, so this review is only for the unbelievably rude, ATROCIOUS customer service from this place. Even if their work is outstanding, it does not justify their snootiness and lack of respect for their customers. I took 6 pairs of designer shoes (4 brand new pairs that needed plastic protectors for the leather soles and 2 pairs that need some TLC) to this place based on recommendations from a Neiman Marcus salesperson. I had read some nasty reviews of this place beforehand so I had already prepared myself. I was being extremely courteous and polite towards the owner who is also the one that does the repairs. Barry (the owner/cobbler) quoted me $50 for each pair of protectors which i thought was expensive but he said "these protectors are made in Italy, not the cheap ones you are used to from China". Ok fine, despite the high price, I thought it was worth it for my brand new shoes. He quoted me $120 to repair another pair of heels (these were quite beat up) and $60 to replace the heels and clean up of another pair of pumps. He also mentioned that they take CASH ONLY. Before I left, I wanted to verify the color of protectors to match the original soles so I asked him what color he would be using. His wife overheard what I said and came to the front from the back and told me" we repair shoes that cost $5000 or more so yours is nothing". I was taken aback by her comment immediately but did not respond. As I was driving, I got more upset by the wife's comment because it was just a very stuck up and disrespectful thing to say. It doesn't matter how good of a job they do, that does not give them the right to ever treat a customer like that. I made an U turn and asked them to give me back my shoes. Barry just shrugged his shoulders and said "Ok". He then asked me what made me change my mind. I told him his wife's comment was very obnoxious and the wife stormed out and yelled at me, " i was just trying to tell you we do meticulous works but ok whatever". She then threw her hands into the air and they both walked back to the working area. Honestly, I cannot recall the last time I received such poor service not just in Houston, but entire United States! I guess they will only bother to be nice to their customers who send in shoes that cost $5000 or are of a particular status. AVOID this place at all cost. Pathetic. This shop charged me 200 to resole a pair of custom made boots. The stitching on one sole was horribly uneven and knotted. When I mentioned this the proprietor said that is the way it is supposed to be. I asked him to stain the stitching so it would not show. So he did. This was bad enough for a 200 resole job, but somehow he made the heels uneven so that the right heel is awkward with a rise or hump that makes the boots really uncomfortable. He also sewed a couple of crimps into the welt that a noticeable. I will not ask him to fix the problems since customer service is simply not his concern. Never again. What a pompous jerk. Update: I took the boots to a master bookmaker who told me that the stitching will result in having to replace the welt should the boots have to be resoled. Also, the pressure in the heel was due to the shank being bent instead of a proper job sanding the new heels. I'm having the bookmaker work on the shank and will update with the results. One thing is certain, Shoe Savers is a BAD PLACE, with BAD PEOPLE doing BAD WORK. read more

Ladies & Gentleman, I've got far more shoes than any straight man should have. My shoes run the gamut from $50 finds to $750 masterpieces. I own most major names from Donald J, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Ferragamo, etc. etc. I've also been to several places in Houston for shoe shine and repair, and even had my shoes shipped to NYC to be fixed and cleaned by the manufacture's recommended places. Now that I've explained my shoe credentials, let's talk Shoe Savers. First off, Shoe Savers customer service is not their strong point. They're not unpleasant, they're straight forward and to the point. But I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to get my shoes fixed, and fixed right. Would it help if they were more pleasant? Oh hell yeah! Would they get more business? Yes. Is he strapped for customers? Hell no. They do some of the best work period. Barry is a no bullshit guy, he gets stuff done and his work is head and shoulders above anywhere else. He repaired and resoled some Ferragamos, they looked like I had just bought them brand new 5 years ago. He will tell you straight up if it's worth his time and your money. Shoe Savers was one of the highly recommended, and one of very few in Houston, so I dropped my shoes off today during lunch. The young man who assisted me was very friendly and prompt. He showed me samples of actual customers' shoes (both just like mine) so that I'd know what the finished product would look like. Today is Monday and the shoes should be ready to go on Friday. Really crappy shoes I wear day to day, and really expensive shoes, I wear sometimes and have had for years (I buy a new pair at big milestones - my last big purchase was when my son was born). Anyway, that latter category needs an artisan's hand when it's time for a repair. And I've been looking for someone I can trust in Houston. Shoe Savers appears to be the right place. I gave them a pair of my Allen Edmonds as a test run before I bring them my really high end shoes. They did an excellent recrafting - I got back a pair of shoes that looked a heckuva lot like they did when they were brand new, 6 years ago. I asked whether they could deal with my more expensive English-made shoes, and the owner assured me that Lobbs and Edward Greens were no problem. I'll give them a pair of those and see how it goes, but at the moment I'm delighted. Prices are predictably high. But the work is excellent. I didn't experience any rudeness. But, obviously, so many low reviews suggest *something* amiss. read more

This is a real craftsman and it shows in his work. That is why I bring my shoes here. I have not had any issues with the staff or the owner. They are very specific and get right to the point. Saves me time...... I agree that this guy is straight up with you about what he can do and I truly appreciate that in a shop owner these days. My shoes look fabulous when I pick them up and I feel very comfortable that they will take good care of my good shoes and boots.
