This is my favorite salon I've ever been to. I highly recommend it to anyone. Mai is the sweetest, most thoughtful, and extremely knowledgeable stylist. I had a cut and color with Junko. I had dark brown virgin hair and just wanted it lightened to medium brown with a few inches cut off. I ended up with DARKER hair (the color was like black-cherry ???) and after coloring my hair she said she would come back to add texture to the cut...i waited and waited, then she finally came back over and like 3 snips later she said she was done. I was in the salon for 3 hours and had to rush to class so I couldn't stay any longer. I did call the next day to say that I was unhappy with it and just wanted her to at least finish the cut (add texture). So I called every day for the next FOUR days and they either didn't pick up or put me on hold and forgot about me. Finally someone said Junko would call me back to fix the cut and guess what she never did. I called again but whatever I'm over it. THANK YOU FOR RUINING MY HAIR AND COSTING ME $$$$$$ read more

Got a digital perm from Junko and I absolutely love the result. This place was recommended by a friend who got her hair colored by Junko, which also turned out fabulously on her, but I was a little nervous about the perm since I didn't see any reviews on it. I found some images on google to show Junko what I wanted and she executed it so perfectly! To top it all off, every staff there was super friendly, the salon is clean and beautiful, and their pricing is very reasonable compared to other salons in NY. I am definitely coming back! read more

Koshi is amazing! Super attentive and most importantly, has great taste. I've been to many other pricier Japanese salons in the city but I'm always more content with what Koshi does. The haircuts he gives is structured in a way that will maintain a decent shape for many months, unlike some that only looks good when you walk out of the salon lol. Highly recommend !!! read more

Picked this salon based on the Yelp reviews and couldn't be happier. Hiroto made suggestions, I told him to do what he thought was best and it was a great outcome. My thick hair falls perfectly after he added texture and took out weight. The $65 price was the icing on the cake. I'll definitely be back. After years of overcompensating for terrible hair choices in my teen years by adopting a total nonchalance about my hair (if it's not doing something super weird, I'm out the door,) I decided to bypass the $7 Chinatown haircut for something a bit more attentive. After reading stellar reviews for Junko, I made an appointment and boy, am I glad. I went in with my usual "I don't really know what to do with it, please help me" attitude and she walked me through everything she planned to do and made sure it had my approval. When, at the end, I asked her to add a little more texture into it, she gladly obliged and took her time. Mai fixed my uneven hair added some much needed texture and gave me great advice on how to keep some volume in my hair with different products. Have you ever heard of an air wave perm? I didn't until I tried out Shizen and realized this was the most advanced perm I have ever received. It takes longer than most perms and requires more effort from the staff but results in softer, longer lasting waves. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional. I would only trust this place to execute a complex hair procedure such as that. read more

Their website may be down but they have no problem gaining a huge following of clients from all over the world. Every time I walk by here on my way to the subway, I always see their hairstyling booths filled up. I am really particular about who cuts my hair and I am rarely brave enough to try a new stylist. When one of my friends mentioned Jinko at Shizen I knew I had to give them a try. Jinko happened to be available on an afternoon during my same day appointment that I made. When I walked in I was greeted by the receptionist and my leather jacket was hung up behind the desk in plain sight. I was seated at Jinko's station and she came by super friendly, very soft spoken voice, I told her how my hair felt bulky, she ran her fingers through my hair, made a couple suggestions and I put my full trust in her. Couple minutes later I was led to the hair washing station where I received a wonderful head massage while my hair was shampooed and conditioned. Jinko came back over when I was finished and she cut, styled and blow dried my hair like magic. I am so impressed with my cut weeks later and still holding a great style with minimal effort and it was exactly what I wanted, if not better! read more

Came here a couple of times and had great experiences , the staff is friendly and welcoming. Junko is my stylist and delivers what I ask for. Now I have curly thick hair and at first I was a little worried she wouldn't know how to cut "my type of hair" but boy I was wrong. I told her the problem with my hair was too puffy so she thinned my hair out a bit so when I styled it, it flowed so much better and didn't feel as heavy. And she is a pro with LOBS! Cons- When dying or blowdrying hair they use multiple people at once or they all take turns with your hair, makes one feel as if they are a science project. One thing I must add is they do not take turns when cutting hair but with everything else they do. Sometimes there is a language barrier but nonetheless Ive never had an issue with Junko. With that being said I would have them 5 stars IF it were based solely on haircuts but its not so 4 would it is. read more

I had been going to this hair salon for few years and was always happy with everything, but recently I had some bad service and incidents that I don't think I will go back to this salon anymore. I went to get my hair colors done and hated the result-- I knew it takes multiple visits and also patience to get the color I wanted to archive (bleaching few times and adding toners), but every time I went back it was just getting worse and worse. So every few weeks, I went there to get my hair color lighter with bleach and I thought I would be able to have the color I wanted after bleaching my hair for like the 3-4 times, but my hairstylist totally messed my hair! My hair was like white blonde after bleaching so many times, so it was supposed to be easy to put the color I wanted over it, but somehow she put darker toner that made my hair darker than the natural hair.. I went through so many bleaching process for what..? I had been so patient and tried to be nice, but now I HATE my hair color. I also do not understand how 5 different people need to be dying, washing, drying my hair each time while I made an appointment with a specific stylist to do my hair. My hair is not for experimenting and I paid a lot for it! I have people who actually offer me to do my hair for free and I chose to pay this much, thinking that you would do a great job. I should be able to walk out of the hair salon happy, not being disappointed. At least the day I get my hair done.. (I would understand if the color fades after few weeks, but not when I am walking out of the salon!) They have also messed up with my appointment few times. One day I called in the morning to say I was running 5-10 mins late and they said it was fine. When I got there they told me my appointment was not there. (Why you didn't tell me when I called?) And what's worse, they never really pick up the phone and it's so hard to make an appointment with them. It's sad because I really do love some of the staff here, but I can't go back here anymore after this stylist messed up my hair and unable to fix it. It's awful to see my hair like this. It really puts me down. They might be good at recommending colors and do decent haircuts, but if you have a specific color that you want, do not go to this salon. Sorry, this salon is way overrated. read more

I have been coming to this salon for a couple years now and this is my favorite salon. I have only gotten haircuts here but every single time Aki nails it despite my no-so-descriptive explanation of what I am looking for. The haircut lasts a long time and takes minimal effort to maintain! The ambiance of the salon is very relaxing, and the staff is extremely courteous. They also give a great head massage while they wash your hair. Book your appointment and come here often! read more

This place is just bullshit. Yeah, they might be good at hair cut but terrible at customer service. I made a reservation a day before, the guy told me its okay to come in next day, i was about to give him my name but then he hang up the phone. Next day i showed up at the salon, they told me they cant find my reservation so I have to come back next day. I fucking made my trip to Brooklyn from Yonkers before I fly back to California, and now you told me that i cant get my hair cut? Its their fault to not taking my name down, but didnt even feel sorry about that. I was so excited to get my last hair cut at their place before i leave, but they really disappointed me!! I had been going to a different salon for about 4 years. At first I was happy with the old salon, but as my hairstyle was changing, I was leaving my appointments less and less satisfied. Even though I wasn't totally happy, I was hesitant to try a new salon. I was afraid of going from not-so-great to worse, and I also felt loyalty to my stylist. Then one of my friends found Shiezen and got an AMAZING haircut from Mai. After seeing my friend's haircut, I decided to give Mai at Shiezen a try. I left with such a great haircut! I've since gone back to her two times (every few months - once for a trim, and once for a style change). Each time I left so happy with my haircut! I had high hopes, but was disappointed. Arrived on time for my hair cut but had to wait for around an hour without anyone checking in on me or giving me updates. The scalp massage during hair washing was really fantastic as others have commented. Ultimately I paid around $100 for a lackluster haircut (choppy layers and awkward bangs) and I'll probably need to get another cut elsewhere to fix. I'd say try SHIZEN if you're up for a pricey risk! read more

this is such a pretty salon and it is so aesthetic. i came here to get a perm sadly it did not stay in my hair for very long. i felt like i was kind of ignored but junko did cut my hair beautifully it looked great! i just wouldn't recommend the place bc it is on the more expensive side and in my opinion isn't too worth it read more

I just had the best haircut and the absolute best haircut experience. Junko is a wonderful and talented hair stylist and everyone who worked there was so sweet. The man who washed my hair was delightful and gave me an all-star head massage. They use the highest quality products and the salon is as hip as it gets. Junko took her time to make my hair look exactly as I had asked but even more stylish. Next time I might just ask her to do whatever she thinks looks best. Can't wait to go back. Love this place. Interior is beautiful and tasteful, everyone is extremely nice and most importantly (to me) the environment is relaxing and calm. Junko gave me a fantastic haircut, she was meticulous and I appreciated that she did not rush through the appointment and took her time to give me a great cut. She listened to what I wanted and I felt that she immediately understood the look I was going for and gave me the best possible version of it. The man who washed my hair also took his time to give me a thorough wash and a great relaxing head massage. Everyone here is very stylish and they take hair seriously, but at no point did I feel that the environment was unwelcoming--this place is hip but very approachable.
