Perfectly okay donuts and kolaches I stopped by and ordered a cinnamon roll and a bold Kolache. The kolache was similar to a jalapeño cheese kolahce. It was alright. Not too greasy, not too chewy and not too cheesy. It was filling and tasted pretty standard for a kolache. The cinnamon roll was very bread heavy and a tad hard on the outer edge with the center being softish. It has nuts that added texture. Overall it was too sweet and not enough cinnamon for my taste. Recently I gave Shipleys a try and it didn't even come close to death! I have always noticed if there's a line in the drive-through thought it might be good. After I ordered and pulled forward the guy working offered me hand sanitizer and was super helpful. Getting my donuts were such a breeze and definitely worth the 10 minute wait in my car. They had a wide variety of kolache donuts and even cinnamon rolls. I opted for the plain glaze which is hard to mess up but you can also tell a lot about a place from their plan glazed. They were astounding! So flaky and fresh. Not overly sugary and not too doughy just perfect. If you're wanting to try a new donut place check it out! My husband grew up with Shipley Do-nuts in Houston. When he saw we were getting a Shipley's by our house, he was so excited. When it took months for it to open, he was like an impatient kid waiting for Christmas! He's brought them home several times and I've loved them, but we recently went in and I had a chance to see it for myself to be able to review it. We were recently without water at our house for a few days, so we treated ourselves to Shipley's for donuts and coffee while we met with plumbers. It wasn't particularly busy when we went, though I know it does get busy. The two women helping people were both pleasant, joking around with customers and being sweet to the kids in the line, which moved quickly. We got a little bag of do-nut holes because I'm a junkie for them. They were perfect and I stress ate them all by myself while doing the math on our plumbing catastrophe. (Yes, I ate my feelings, it could not be helped). My husband loved his blueberry cake do-nut (his fave) and we split a cinnamon twist that we kind of snacked on all day. It was just that kind of day. Aside from the sugar crash that happened later, I regret nothing. Side note: he looked askance at me for ordering a big coffee when we got there since we have the fancy espresso machine at home and we don't buy coffee out at places. Plan to try again when not so close to grand opening, because it was crazy crowded; hopefully not indicative of their typical quality. 2nd visit: Service better, but still slower due to waiting on glazed donuts to be available. I happened to be driving by and my kids saw donuts... Nice play Shipley's...I see what ya did there. Anyway, we came in to see only one other customer at the counter. She seemed very persnickety about how her donuts were given to her. She was getting four and didn't want them in the same bag because they stick together. Apparently, you can't get a box unless you order six donuts. That's silly and I am now totally in line with the persnickety woman who didn't want her donuts to squish together getting the icing all mixed up. Power to the people, persnickety lady. I got your back. I decided against the individual bags for each donut like the above mentioned lady requested and went with a mixed half-dozen just to get a box. Very Long, contains THREE Updates. tl;dr: 2nd update extremely negative, they recovered, all's good. For now. Full version: They just opened so crowded. But the donuts were yum, the staff harried but friendly. They have a good variety, too. Only reason they don't get the full 5 stars is because I have a super high bar for donuts, and only 2 donut places have ever earned 5 stars. I'm always glad to have another donut option close by, and such a good one, too. Definitely stopping here to get co-worker donuts on Friday so they can all taste them. Since they are about 2 miles out of my way, I likely won't get co-worker donuts there often, since I pass 6 other donut places that are directly on my route. But it's an option, and I like that. UPDATE: I went back Friday to get donuts for co-workers and the consensus is that Shipley Donuts are delicious. Everyone likes the crust and tender insides and the fact that they aren't overwhelmingly sweet. Also, since they weren't as crowded at 6:00 am as they were on opening day, I had a chance to ask if they were going to have the beignets other Shipley Donuts carry - and the manager said YES! So looking forward to that! SECOND UPDATE: The last 2 visits were less than pleasant. The employees now act as if they resent customers coming in and drag their feet something fierce. Last time, it took WAAAAAAYYYY too long to get an order filled and I wasn't sure at any point until the server actually put the donut in the box that he even heard me. He wouldn't look in my direction at all. This morning (7/19/19) ws the worst. I was the ONLY customer and waited for someone to notice I was there. No smile, but that's OK, it was early morning and some people aren't morning people. What was awful was that he didn't ask if I was ready or what I wanted, just stared at me. Is this considered good customer service? I didn't know if HE was ready, and he placed the entire burden of finding out if he was ready to take my order on me - and when I started talking - HE WALKED OFF to the OTHER register and put a note on it and then slowly strolled back to me. I'd started my order when he just WALKED OFF. Then, while I was placing my order, I had to wait for him to slowly place 3 tissues in the bottom of the box. Not sure I had his attention, I asked for the first donut, which he then slowly placed in the box. I told him the second donut. Before he could find it and put it in the box, 3 more customers came in, and he abandoned me to go take THEIR orders - just WALKED OFFF. He put my box down, with the one out of a dozen I was ordering and WALKED OFF. He just left me, with myorder barely begun, to take care of other customers. What? Is this the new customer service???? I had to leave and go find another donut place to order the donuts I needed to bring to work today. I was so frustrated and angry at how I was treated. The donuts are good - but the customer service has plummeted. The employees act as if they hate the customers and resent being there. They've gone from 4 stars to 2, and if they don't up the service it will fall again. I hope they up the service so it regains stars. I hate having to do negative reviews. I have a very low bar for decent service - once you start taking my order, pay attention to what I'm ordering and stay with me until it's done. There! That's not so hard? You don't have to smile or have a sense of humor or be friendly, just professional. Get in, get it done, take my money, we're all happy. THIRD UPDATE: Today was much more like it! service was prompt, efficient, and accurate. The donut offerings were a bit skimpy, but they were coming out fast enough I only had to wait a little bit for the plain donuts. And they fixed the water sprinklers so you didn't get soaked getting in to the parking lot! I didn't mention that before because it might not be under their control, but it's mostly fixed now (the city just needs to come along and fix the pothole right there as you drive in - also not under their control so doesn't affect their stars). So, decent service, good donuts for my co-workers (my kids are allergic to soy so they will never, ever get Shipley's - poor kids). i've raised the stars back to where they belong. One of the worst experiences ever at the new store on NW Expsy. We went this am at 9am. They had very little stock. No Kolaches. The place was dirty with trash on the floor behind the counter near the food, flies and it was so hot you could see the toppings were melted on the few donuts they had Staff appeared poorly trained.
